Coach can boost pay with A&M
Jones gets two-year extension, financial incentives

Alabama A&M football coach Anthony Jones will get a two-year contract extension filled with incentive clauses that could raise his yearly pay to $152,000 or higher, athletic director Jim Martin said Thursday.
Jones' base salary will remain $112,500.
The deal will keep Jones, who interviewed for the Grambling State job before withdrawing his name more than a week ago, at A&M through the 2008 season. The incentives take effect this year.
"It was very important to Alabama A&M to lock Coach Jones up for a period of time," Martin said. "It is very difficult to build a championship program changing coaches every three years. We wanted Coach Jones to stay here and we were prepared to match any bona fide offer that Grambling State put before us, but it didn't come to that."
Jones will not get a raise, Martin said, but could receive additional monies through his radio and television shows and more monies if he meets all of his incentives.
The list of incentives, which will be increased according to Martin, includes winning the Black College national championship, the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship, homecoming, the Magic City Classic and other classic games, being named Coach of the Year and winning more than eight games.
"There are incentives not only for Coach Jones, but there are incentives for his assistant coaches, too," Martin said.
Jones, who has compiled a 23-12 record through his first three seasons, which ties him with former coach Louis Crews for the most wins by an A&M coach in his first three seasons, asked for a two-year extension before going to interview for the Grambling State job. The extension was not offered and Jones went to interview.
After returning home early last week, Jones called Grambling State athletic director Willie Jeffries and withdrew his name from consideration. GSU officials hired Melvin Spears, who had been interim coach
"Had I gotten the extension, I never would have gotten on the plane," Jones said.
The extension settles the issue.
"We've talked, but I've been concentrating on signing my incoming class and preparing my team for spring practice," Jones said. "Once we get through recruiting, hopefully, we can sit down and get all the paperwork signed and get this behind us."
National signing day is Wednesday.
