MEAC Explains Football Championship Scenarios
November 12, 2001
GREENSBORO, NC - The race for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference 2001 football championship has a great deal of scenarios if Florida A&M loses to Bethune-Cookman College this Saturday.

The scenarios are abundant; however, if Florida A&M beats Bethune-Cookman, the Rattlers will be crowned 2001 MEAC champions.

If NCA&T, Hampton, B-CC and FAMU all finish at 6-2, the Pirates would then win the MEAC title by virtue of its 2-1 record in head-to-head competition between the contenders, including its 23-7 win over the Aggies.

If the standings at the end of the season reflect a three-way tie for first amongst FAMU, B-CC and Hampton, the point sustem of the tie-breaker policy would go into effect.

If Bethune-Cookman defeats Florida A&M University Saturday in the Florida Classic, Hampton wins and NCA&T loses one more game, the Wildcats can claim the MEAC title by virtue of the MEAC tie-breaker policy, which has beem in effect for some years.

The points system goes as follows: (1) count 4 points for a conference win; (2) count 3 points for a non-conference win against a Div. l-AA team; (3) count 1 point for a non-conference win over a Div. ll team.

Here are the possibilities; If NCA&T loses to either South Carolina State or Delaware State the Aggies would be eliminated. If there is a three-way tie between FAMU, B-CC and Hampton, the point system would go into affect. This would put B-CC in the title position by virtue of its 30-0 win over Division l-AA opponent, Morris Brown College. The point system would give B-CC 30 points, 24 for conference wins and three for the MBC win and three for their win over Savannah State, Hampton would have 25 points, 24 for conference wins and one point for their 55-14 win over division ll opponent Virginia State.

If NCA&T and Hampton both finish at 6-2, along with FAMU and B-CC, the Pirates would then win the MEAC by virtue of its 23-7 win over the Aggies.

Breakdown of scenarios:
For FAMU to win: Must defeat B-CC
For B-CC to win: Must beat FAMU and NCA&T must lose one more game. If Morgan State beats Hampton and B-CC wins, the Wildcats will clinch.
For Hampton to win: NCA&T must win its remaining games, and FAMU must lose to B-CC.
For NCA&T to win: They must defeat SC State and Delaware State and FAMU must lose to B-CC and Hampton must lose to Morgan State.
