2016/17 Bowl and Playoffs tv ratings

@Bewildered @JAG89

The college football bowl season got off to a stronger start on broadcast and a weaker one on cable.

The San Diego State/Houston Las Vegas Bowl had a 2.6 overnight rating on ABC Saturday afternoon, up 8% from BYU/Utah last year (2.4), up 63% from Utah/Colorado State in 2014 (1.4), and the highest for the bowl since Boise State/Washington on ESPN in 2012 (3.0).

The 2.6 was the highest non-NFL overnight of the weekend, topping the Kentucky/North Carolina college basketball game on CBS later in the day (2.4).

Earlier in the day, the FCS Celebration Bowl between Grambling and North Carolina Central had a 2.0 overnight — up a tick from last year’s inaugural matchup between North Carolina A&T and Alcorn State.

Over on cable, the results were not as positive. Per Sports Business Daily, overnights fell 10% for the Southern Miss/Louisiana-Lafayette New Orleans Bowl (from 1.0 to 0.9) and by 29% for both the Appalacian State/Toledo Camellia Bowl and the New Mexico/UT-San Antonio New Mexico bowl (from 1.4 to 1.0 for both games).

The guy that's over CB said that last year it drew 14m viewers at a 1 point something, in an article posted by Celebration Bowl twitter page and if This year was in the 2's then it had more than 14m views so I'm not sure where some getting this 2,3 and 4 million viewers from. http://www.hbcugameday.com/2016/12/celebration-bowl-attendance-2016-nccu-grambling.html?m=1
The lower number is only counting viewers in the states. Hgher is counting all who watched on the armed forces network and other means.

Maybe he was including streaming ,maybe it's the type of rating system he's using or maybe he's exaggerating ( not uncommon when it comes to meac folks)

If one would look further down the scale of the SPORTSMEDIAWATCH link they would actually see a Michigan game that had a 2.0 rating and drew 3.715 million viewers

Updated report on the Celebration Bowl ratings. The original report of a 2.0 rating was wrong or has been updated

Hey everyone - thought we'd chime in here to clarify some confusion regarding the ratings.

The original rating of 2.0 on ABC was an overnight rating. Overnight ratings are estimates based on a select group of Nielsen markets and households. This 2.0 number was up from the 1.9 overnight rating last year.

The final rating was 1.83, up from 1.71 last year. This means that approximately 1.83% of TV households were watching the game on average.

The viewership number that Nielsen reports is an average, not total. This year's game averaged north of 2.72 million viewers including streaming on WatchESPN, up six percent from 2.56 million last year. As mentioned, this year's game was on the Armed Forces Network in 140 countries while last years was not. Those numbers are not reflected in the ratings.

The 14 million number that was reported last year was total viewers. This means over 14 million people tuned into ABC for more than 5 minutes during the game. We do not have those numbers yet for this year's game.

This is all published on our website here: http://www.thecelebrationbowl.com/history/bowl-history/

Part of it is the fact that they went from Georgia-Penn State to GT-Kentucky in one of the bowls, and Michigan-Florida one year to LSU-Louisville the next. A lot of it is about matchups in the big bowls.

Yeah but I'm still amazed at the numbers difference being that It's bowl season. I mean folks usually just turn on the TV to have conversations about games if nothing else.

The bowl matchups do leave a lot to be desired.

Well for the citrus bowl. I think the time slot was wrong..it was too early.

I know i am late to the party, but viewership is important, but perception is everything.. When I looked at the CB bowl. I just felt NCCU coming off the best season in history and the return of the GSU. The crowd would been better.
