Bracey unlikely to play

Southern third baseman/leadoff hitter Romey Bracey is unlikely to play in this week?s Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament.

Bracey has been out since breaking the hamate bone in his left (nonthrowing) wrist on April 20, late in a game against Texas Southern. Bracey, hitting .356 with 43 runs, 28 RBIs, eight stolen bases, five triples and four home runs, has missed nine consecutive games.

?I won?t put him in there,? Southern coach Roger Cador said. ?He hasn?t swung a bat. He?s history for the tournament. It?s unfortunate. You?d love to have that kind of gamer.?

Senior Michael Gavion, a middle infielder throughout his career, has moved to third base and batted at the top of the order in Bracey?s absence.

Throughout this decade, Southern has been able to call on a flame-throwing closer, from Carl Primus to Damian Ursin to Jason Quarles and Jeffery McCollum, late in games.

As SU rebuilt its pitching staff, and in particular its bullpen, this season, the most eye-popping difference to this year?s edition to past Jaguars teams, is the presence of a fireballer ?doesn?t exist,? Southern coach Roger Cador said flatly.

?We?ve won with trying to be smart with guys and what they had to accomplish,? Cador said.

Southern (26-16), which faces Alabama State (13-20) at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament at Lee-Hines Field, has won by piecing together an interesting mix of seniors having their best seasons and freshmen making their mark.

Southern University baseball coach Roger Cador will often say the most intriguing things, often when you least expect them.

Like this:

?This is a good year to coach Southern baseball,? Cador said Monday afternoon.

How many of his 24 years have been good to Cador?

Well, let?s review a few.

2005 was a gritty run to the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament title. 2003 was the 47-7 year, with Rickie Weeks as college baseball?s best player and an NCAA tournament win at Southern Miss. 2002 had Weeks and Fred Lewis in the lineup. 2001 had Weeks and Michael Woods and a redemption from the way the 2000 SWAC tournament went. Then there was the four-peat from 1996-99. And there was the improbable NCAA tournament win over Cal State Fullerton in 1987 that began the whole legacy.

Lots of good years, for sure.

Grambling baseball begins postseason this week

For the first time since 2002, the Grambling State Tiger baseball team will participate in postseason play as the team will participate in the 2008 SWAC Baseball Tournament on the campus of Southern University beginning on Wednesday.

Grambling State finished second place outright in the SWAC West and earned the division?s No. 2 seed. As a result, the Tigers will battle Mississippi Valley, the No. 3 seed from the SWAC East, in the tournament?s opening game on Wednesday at 10 a.m.

In Grambling?s last postseason appearance, which was in Shreveport under longtime head coach Wilbert Ellis, the Tigers were seeded third and opened the tourney with a 6-5 upset over the SWAC East?s No. 1 seed Alcorn State. GSU dropped a 17-15 shootout to Jackson State in the second round but bounced back in the consolation bracket with a 12-8 win over Texas Southern. The Tigers fell a game short of advancing to the championship round as they were eliminated in the semifinals after a 7-2 loss to Jackson State.

With no player on the active roster with SWAC Tournament experience, Grambling does possess a seasoned tournament veteran in second-year head coach Barret Rey. As a player and a coach at Southern University, Rey appeared in 14 consecutive SWAC Tournaments before missing his first-ever tourney last year.

No. 1-seeded Jackson State will kick off the 2008 Southwestern Athletic Conference baseball tournament against No. 4 Texas Southern in Baton Rouge at 4 p.m. today. JSU has not played Texas Southern since an 11-7 loss in the 2003 SWAC tournament.

"Texas Southern is a mystery right now," JSU coach Omar Johnson said. "Some schools you can get information on and some it's tougher."

Texas Southern (12-32, 7-17) enters the event with the worst record of the tournament qualifiers. The Tigers had to take 2-of-3 from Arkansas-Pine Bluff (10-33, 6-18) in the final weekend to get in.

Texas Southern is expected to throw Rashad Ford against JSU's Charles Williams. Ford, a right-handed senior, has a 2-5 record and a 5.81 ERA, 10th best in the SWAC. He leads the league in opponents' batting average (.240) and ranks No. 2 in strikeouts (62) behind No. 1 Williams (72).

"Everybody has a No. 1," said Johnson, who described Ford as a fastball-slider pitcher. "And any given day that No. 1 pitcher can beat you whether you're an eight seed or a four seed.

"They're pitching their best pitcher and he's going to give them an opportunity to win a game."

Only three men have ever led a Jackson State baseball team to a Southwestern Athletic Conference championship.

Robert Hill (1968) is more known for going 40-12-1 as the football coach who developed the university's most prominent alum in Walter Payton.

W.C. Gorden (1971) happens to be the winningest football coach in school history, winning eight SWAC championships on the gridiron. He will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in July.

The third, Bob Braddy, became Jackson State's athletic director in 2006 after winning 12 SWAC baseball titles between 1973 and 2000.

Omar Johnson begins his quest to become No. 4 today.

The Tigers play Texas Southern, the No. 4 seed in the West, at Lee Hines Field in Baton Rouge at 4 p.m. Fueled by a high-octane offense, the Tigers (35-20, 18-5) recorded the most wins since 42 in 1977 and earned the No. 1 seed in the East for the second consecutive season.

"We've talked about (the last championship)," Johnson said. "We didn't go that far in-depth, but we talked about it. "

Making Jackson State's 68 victories over the last two seasons, including a semifinal appearance in the 2007 SWAC Tournament, even more impressive is the fact the Tigers had to forfeit 17 SWAC games in 2006 and fire coach Mark Salter for using ineligible players.

But the program is bringing up

They have been doing stories all season long and posting the scores..

Re: 2008 SWAC Baseball Tournament

Mississippi Valley State 12
Grambling State 1

Bottom Of The 9th - Grambling batting

Wasn't the next game suppose to start at 12:30pm? They should have had the 10 run rule.

Re: 2008 SWAC Baseball Tournament

There is a 10 run rule i think. Valley scored 2 in the top of the 9th.

Re: 2008 SWAC Baseball Tournament

Nope, the full 9 innings.

Mississippi Valley State 12
Grambling State 2
Final

Because MVSU was the visiting team and lead by 10 in the top of the 9th inning, the home team still gets to come to bat. They only lead by 9 runs in the previous inning.

valley beat that bia with a bat! game was close then valley 3 in top of 7th. jefferson pitched well for gram but got tired. valley hit 3 homers to left field.

there are rain clouds circling the field waiting to downpour!

SWAC Baseball Tournaments are ALWAYS the most eventful. lol. Anything that can happen does happen at the SWAC Baseball Tourney. JSU's game probably won't stat to midnight or something. lol.
