2008 Olympics: Notes, Stories & Observations

Among other things here are a few of my viewpoints.

I will make it my business to watch the Cuban women's volleyball team.

As for the weighlifter's arm I remember hearing about a similar incident during the '70s. I cannot remember the country the person represented and did not see the attempted lift.

I like The Stews, but they along with Skip Bayless will have to give Michael Phelps his complete due.

I can't believe we have people complaining about our "elite" gymnist loosing to 12-14 year old girls. Step your game up - a grown woman (professional/college athlete) shouldn't loose to a dayum 12 year old girl in an athletic event.

None of those girls are grown women. Our girls are young as well. Once you make it to college, you are over the hill in that sport. LOL.

They should call it girls gymnastics. Because most of them are kids. I watched our girls last night and they were looking just as young. So it aint like the Chinese are beating 21 year old women out there. They are beating 16 year old girls. They should change the rules and make them have to be at least 17 or 18 to compete. You would never see a 16 year old out there in track and field or in alot of the other Olympic sports. Even the Men's gymnastics is not that young.

I find it very concerning that these teenage and tween girls (Americans and Chinese) are competing in events that has the name "women" in front of it.

EXACTLY.......that is some BS to me. That sport has always been hypocritical. They should just say Girls Gymnastics. Poor college aged women across the world are deemed to old for some reason.........but the men don't have that issue.

They are putting too much pressure on a bunch of teenagers. Not to mention, folks talk all that experience crap about our girls. Those Chinese girls start training as soon as they can walk. Our girls have to hope their parents get them involved early. It is a mandate in China. It is voluntary here in this country. So a 14 year old Chinese girl probably has more experience than our 16 year old. It would be different if the Chinese girls were beating grown arse women....... But this is nothing new. Nadia Comaneici was 14 I think when she won everything. The last older female I can remember winning was Olga Korbut back in the day. She was probably young too but she looked old. :lmao::

Thanks for the info - I have not or will not watch gymnastics in the olympics.

Do we have any of us on the gymnastics teams?

Not this year man. At least I didn't see any. But there was a Dominique Dawes sighting.:ebrow:

Not sure if many of you realize this or not, but the younger you are in gymnastics, the better you are! Once you're over that 18 year old mark, it's pretty much down hill after that! A girl who is 12-17 years old has more flexibility than a grown up. Plus, as you get older, so do your bones as they tend to grow faster which prevents you from being at your peak performance. You will NEVER find a woman over the age of 23 in this day in age win a gymnastics. That's why I don't blame the Chinese for using 12-16 year old. That's when they are in their peak.

That may be true.....but there also a danger to that as well. There have been studies on how these girls are suffering hard core injuries at such a young age while their bodies are still developing. Mary Lou Retton even spoke about it. She was being cautious with her own girls/children.

If the age was mandated to be 18 at least all the women no matter if they are on a downside .......the competition would at least be WOMEN and not girls. If a 16 year old boy can't win at gymnastics in the Men's side........why is so on the women's. Actually I think you would see more power from older women in those competitions. That poor young Chinese girl last night looked like she had no energy left and couldn't get her body to cooperate with her on her landings. Fell straight on her butt. Those girls all just looked so frail and beat down to me. But hey that's how the Girls gymnastics have been. But I still disagree with it. Let the best 18 and up Women compete for it or call it Girls instead Women's competition.

Oh..I agree with you about the age requirement and how an older person could perform much better given the experience and body development. But body development is like a double edge sword in gymnastics. It can either work for you or against you depending on your body type, natural strength and flexibility. Also, to answer your question above about a 16 year old boy on the Men's side versus a woman....I think the biggest difference is that girls tend to develop physically quicker than males! Overall, the Chinese women did look lost at times during the floor exercise, but I think a lot of that had to do also with nerves. Being that young on that kind of stage will almost surely break the confidence and execution in many of us!

younger children are also more fearless

Do you think Michael Phelps has more fear now at 23 than he did at 4 years ago?

I think what they won't say is that those girls weigh nothing at the younger age and are much bigger in size when they get older. Because if they believed they were more fearless at a younger age........the men's team would look like the women's.....err..........girls team.

Yeah I agree with you on that. Those girls just looked so frail to me. You could tell they were nervous. Heck I would have fear of failing in that big of a stage when you are that young. Alot of pressure for a teen to be carrying for their country.

in gymastics starting young especially starting young is a please (trust me please). a younger girl is more likely to try a newer riskier skill than an older person. that's why chinese girls have more exciting, challenging bar routines. you aren't as afraid of falling...

So why doesn't that apply to the men's side in that sport? Since women mature faster than men.......wouldn't it be better for the men to be young and fearless too? I mean it is known that boys normally have no fear of trying crazy isht when we are young. LOL.

So you are saying that by time a girl is 18 she is too scared to try a risky routine? Which is interesting that women figure skaters seem to have no fear of falling as they get older and will try harder and riskier routines. I would think you would rather fall on the mat or floor than that ice. I still think like some are saying in the media......that these girls are sacrificial lambs sent out for slaughter.

That's my brother!!!

Freshman wide receiver Marsellos Wilder woke up early to watch his brother Deontay compete in the Olympic boxing heavyweight division Wednesday. Deontay Wilder defeated Algeria's Abdelaziz Touilbini 10-4 in four rounds.

"I was all out the bed hollering and waking up my roommate," Marsellos Wilder said. "It was amazing to see my brother on TV on that level."

Deontay Wilder has been boxing for less than three years, starting his amateur career on Oct. 19, 2005. Next, he faces Ukrainian Mohammed Arjaoui in a bid to advance to the quarterfinals.

"He's my role model," said Marsellos, who draws inspiration on the football field from Deontay. "Honestly, I didn't really think he would succeed."

BEIJING (AP)?For a few brief moments, it was as if a curtain had parted. We had one of China?s young?perhaps too young?Olympic gymnasts alone.

Yang Yilin, through no fault of her own, has been one of the stories of these games because of questions about whether she and two other gymnasts on the Chinese team are old enough to compete. China insists they are, but that hasn?t erased the doubts that they may be under the minimum age of 16.

Now we had our chance to find out more, to get a close-up look at this 4-foot, 11-inch figure of controversy, as she waited for her medal-winners? news conference to begin

I know I wouldn't have a daughter in that sport.......it still don't make it right. The men getting started later is interesting. So the Kurt Thomas's and Mitch Gaylord's of the world got a chance to really develop their bodies before getting broken up at a young age. So basically those young girls are being sacrificed because they don't remember injuries or fear them like a 18 year old girl. That is crazy to me. So what they are saying is a young girls mentality in that sport is not on par with the men.....the men get more fearless as they get older and I assume more flexible as well since they start them so late..........and the girls are more fearless and flexible at a younger age and then it's downhill for them mentally and physically as they reach 18 and up. I learn something new everyday. I guess it is good thing other women sports are not like that. So none of those college age girls doing gymnastics for their universities can touch any of those youngsters? Wow..... I guess it just for fun after High School. Must be a downer to know you can't beat a 16 year old when you are bigger and stronger than them.

I was just curious about it.......just don't agree with the age limit though. I hope they do something about it. Just hate seeing those little girls out there crushing themselves to please their country and family who pushed them out there.

And we all know that most Asians, mainly women, look much younger than their actual age. Heck, I work with a 30 year old that looks about 17. If those U.S. girls would have never choked, this wouldn't be an issue.

Olympic Men's 100m (Tyson Gay is Out/Who will win?)

I'm predicting Usain Bolt will run 9.6s. He ran a 9.85 effortlessly in the semis and just seems to be on another level. Asafa Powell will probably be next. Maybe Walter Dix will be lucky enough to get the bronze.

Now how are you gone try and act like you predicted the men 100 a full five minutes after the finals:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

Seriously in between flipping the channel from NBC to the USA network, I did not see a single coverage of the 100m finals being shown. I had been keeping up with the rounds on trackandfieldnews.com I just now went to the official olympic website and saw the results. LOL Anyways...I went 2 out of 3 with my predictions (wink).

Usain is unreal!!! I see Bolt and Powell finishing 1 and 2.. With Tyson Gay pulling that hamstring he looked pretty good in the qualifier 100m but I would be surprised if he metal with that injury KNOWING Powell and Bolt WILL metal... I just don't see it...
