2003 All SWAC Football Team

Excellent points. Doug is getting beter in his dealings with the media. He's learning how to "play" the situation to his advantage. Rob, Casem, and Gordon were masters at it, although Casem could be caustic sometimes but always "on the slick".

But Doug's persona is quite a bit different. I think he shows his emotion more than most coaches. But you always know how he feels (lol).

Naw dude, trust me that's not Jone's style. He's not that petty. Even to this day he praises the play of Eugene.

Which is probably true. If I recall correctly, Jones and Doug are friends. But Jones was very unhappy with Doug trying to run up the score. Good to know he is not petty dude.

Oh when he is in a good mood, he is excellent. I hear him a few times throughout the year on radio in the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex. He is upbeat and says all the right things to recruit a kid into a HBCU, especially Grambling. He speaks of the caring for the kid's future, their getting an education, improving them as an athlete, the history of our HBCUs (especially GSU), etc... He shoots the bull with the announcers and the callers. For example, when I call, it is like the old days when Casem and Gordon would speak of each others team. I say things like how good of a year he is having and how well his guys are playing, so we are looking forward to a great Bayou Classic. He turns around and says how SU is a really good program that they (GSU) know they have to be ready to play for the Classic.

But, when he gets upset, he says some things that I'm sure he probably wishes he hadn't. But, he probably says "oh well, such is life". It hurts him to be 1-5 against SU as a coach. That makes him 5-5 overall. He is getting better.

But, I just have a feeling that some things he has said and done to and towards other teams and coaches have something to do with the voting. Like I said before, I felt that was the case when SU was dominating. Pete was new the SWAC ranks and I don't think he intermingled much if at all with the other coaches. Part of that may have been due to Casem being AD. So, he didn't have a need to. But, I think it didn't help some really good athletes on some excellent teams to earn their All-SWAC honors.

I'm not saying it is fair. It is just my gut instinct concerning the reasoning. It is nothing anybody will admit to if it is true. It is one reason you have to be careful about giving too much credit to someone just because they have received some type of recognition.

Peace!!!

ummmmm hol up!!!!!!

Why isn't Keldrick Williams 1st team All-Swac????????

He was one of only 2 backs in the Swac to get 1000 yards (even though he was limited by injuries in some games).
Wms. had the highest yards per carry of all the top rushers.
and he scored more TDs than the other 1st teamer.

More yards rushing, higher yards per carry, more TDs.............

what else could he have done to warrant a first team selection?
:smh:
:tdown:

This is just another case of what we have been talking about. I was shocked to see Peoples listed as 1st team RB (if you go by yardage alone). I wished we knew more about how they make their selections. Maybe we would appreciate the selections more.

SWAC PR Man, where are you??? Can you shed some light on how the selections are made?

My opinion would be that Williams plays for Bama State and Peoples plays for SU.

Anyway, I just went back to check out the second team again, and why didn't I notice that David Kennebrew made 2nd Team RB. :lmao: Were SWAC RBs that bad that a JSU RB could make the 2nd team. I love me some JSU, but other than T. Manning, I wouldn't argue for anyone being on the team this season.

Robber, I agree with you the Kennebrew selection. Here is the list of the top SWAC rushers.

RUSHING Team Cl G Att Yds Avg TD Yds/G

BONDS, Jeremiah AAMU SR 12 203 1097 5.4 15 91.4

David Kennebrew?s stats are listed below;

KENNEBREW,David JSU 11 98 379 3.8 2 34.4

How in the hell can Kennebrew be 2nd team all-SWAC? It can?t be based on yards, avg, td or yds/g.

Listening to the Jaguar Journal this morning and former coaches Otis Washington and Bob Bennitt confirmed my beliefs that the coaches left Bruce Eugene out of the all SWAC Team because of the comments that Doug made about the officiating of the game and not caring what the SWAC office thinks about it. Quoting them "It wasn't vote against Bruce but a vote clearly against Doug"

I don't buy it. If that is the case why vote for any GSU players. That still doesn't answer the question like the jsu RB making all swac and other standouts making the team. You are under the impression that all coaches watched the bayou classic, which is not a out of the realm of possibility, and watched the post game interviews and press conferences. I am sure other coaches in the SWAC feel the same way Doug does about the SWAC refs but are scared to say it.

Doesn't matter whether you buy it or not, I'm just saying what these coaches said and for some strange reason I think they know more about it than you or I.

As for them watching it or not why wouldn't they? It's the premier game of "YOUR" conference and its the holiday and even if they don't, are you that naive to think they don't talk to each other?

Btw my comments were about Bruce so I really don't care about JSU RB, maybe you should ask JSU, I fail to understand your concern with that, you didn't have a running back in the race....did you? :rolleyes:

Dude STFU. You are reaching as much as Carlos Brown is searching the TSPN for topics for his show. So you are saying that they had a conference call and decided not to vote for Bruce because Doug said things they have wanted to say for a long time. Your award was deserving.

not to single out Kennebrew, but to show how stupid these selections are

this guy made 2nd team all -Swac and rushed for 379 yards for the year, avg. 34 yards a game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that is RIDICULOUS!!! downright disgusting !!!

heck, even Bama State's QB rushed for more than that

Keldrick Wms. should have been first team and Robt. Randolph should have been 2nd team before Kinnebrew

:smh::smh:

Noooo, what I'm saying is I gave my opinion about why Bruce was left out and that they concur, Now whether or not you agree with it is on you I really could give a rat's @ss if you do or not.....is that clear enough for you? I wouldn't want you to be confuse on that point...really.

Don't Shoot the Messenger

I have been reading the board and others comments about the All-SWAC team and I have made it a point to stay away from this.

However, a member of this board has Emailed and asked to give some factual information about the All-SWAC voting. As I say on top Don't shoot the Messenger (me). Knowing some on this board, no matter what I say here won't make a hill of beans ("those idiots in the SWAC office" or "give me some kind of spin"), but to those who want to work with some valid information ... here goes.

The nominaton/voting process goes like this;
1) Each school is asked to submit nominations to the SWAC office, which are placed on a nomination sheet and official ballot and returned to the schools for voting.
2) Each school then votes (coach & SID) on the team, but they cannot vote for a player from their school. This gives each school two (2) votes ... and a possible maximum of 18 pts for any player (if they were a unanimous selection).
3) Votes are cast for Offensive line (5), RB (2), WR (2) ... etc, Defensive line (4), LB (3), DB (4) ... POY (1 each)

Vote tally process;
1) The top vote getters in each category (i.e O-line-5, RB-2, D-Line-4, LB-3) are 1st team.
2) The next vote getters are 2nd team. If there are ties (1st or 2nd team), these are listed as such (see the list).

F.Y.I. ...
(1) the Commissioner spoke with the football coaches (and other sports as well) at the Spring Meeting about putting integrity in the All-SWAC team(s) voting processes ... about not putting personal things into their voting

(2) There were some people (coaches or SIDs) who DID NOT CAST A VOTE, or did not vote for players in some categories :eek2: ... This is their perogative.

What you see on the team is what was voted ... for whatever reason. This SWAC officer saw that Bruce Eugene was not going to make the 2nd team due to some voting ommissions, but was not going to try to make the team look "Politically Correct" with some "hanging chads" nonsense.

Personal Observation
Does not necessarily reflect the opinions of anyone else in the SWAC office

Urban Civics 101bourne out of the 1960's stuggles We need to take every opportunity to exercise our right(s) to vote.

SWAC PR Man

Thanks SWAC PR Man, I have repeatedly stated on this board that many of the problems place on the SWAC Office should actually be place on the SWAC member institutions.

SWAC PR Man,

Thanks for the info on the voting process. I can't knock you for the info you provided. But when I knock the SWAC, I'm knocking every single one of us in this situation. To have kids play their hearts out, only to be shafted by some who just don't give a hoot about the kids is sickening to me. And when you have coach's and/or SIDs that purposely don't vote a position or don't vote, then those people don't care about the kids.

If I may make a suggestion, the SWAC office should mandate that every coach and SID must vote for each and every position. Failure to do so should result in some form of punishment. If the office can make the schools play each other in non-conference games, you should definitely be able to make those coaches/SIDs vote. And I think the votes should be scrutinized. I hope not, but don't be surprised next year if Grambling's voters decide to leave off certain deserving student athletes.

Don't be surprised if Doug does not call off the dogs next season too.

Having the J-State RB as an All-SWAC selection is equally egregious as the omission of Bruce. J-State could not run at all this year.

Jealousy, envy = sad.

Thanks SWAC PR Man

I concur with Robbers perspective as it relates to mandating all institutions to vote or contend with serious repercussions. I also think that it should be conveyed to the public what institutions have been negligent. A nice short press release to TSPN would certainly motivate the apathetic person(s) to be responsible until it is mandated....Regards

Yes, all true! Nevertheless, I congratulate the young men who were selected...not wanting to diminish their seasons.

Guys... The bottom line is as long as we (SWAC Alumni Associations) don't have the the power to speak and raise fear in our administrations to be heard, all of what you say is mute!

You can publish everything. You think Bell would be intimated by publishing his vote. Heck, JSU alums want him fired due to his coaching results and they can't get it done. Why would he be worried. Alcorn alums wanted Thomas fired for losing every game a couple of years ago and couldn't do a thing about it. You think he would be intimated by posting whether he voted or how he voted? Heck, SU finally received some respectitable recognition for a team that performed very well on the All-SWAC team. If Pete had done some very questionable voting and it was reported, do you really think we would get in his butt for it.

The point again, as I stated early, the SWAC's Presidents/Chancellors, SIDs, Head Coaches, etc... are no longer SWAC rooted individuals (to borrow from my beloved head coaches). As much as some of us hated them, the Robinsons, Gordons, Casems, etc.. loved their schools, but they loved the SWAC and knew that things like All-SWAC teams were reflections on the overall talent of the SWAC when Pros were evaluating their talent. As I stated earlier, I think it is a very personal thang now days.

Peace!!!

My bad.. I really thank SWAC PR Man for giving us the FACTS of the process. I hate assuming. I think our fellow SWAC Board poster for asking SWAC PR Man to shed some Factual light on our speculations on how this process worked.

It sounds like our worst expections are the case. If everybody but one person voted for Quincy and the other one person voted for the Braves QB, then Quincy is 1st team and he is second team due to there not being an ability of anyone voting for the who they fill is the 1st and 2nd choice (a more fair process). So, it isn't a travesty that Eugene was shafted by this system. It is a flaw of this system. This could happen even with everyone doing the fair and honest thing. It certainly becomes a flaw when personnel agendas come into play.

As for the not voting, since the voters do the nominations, if I know I'm being force to people I don't want to vote for and to assume you have a penalty THAT CAN BE INFORCED in place, I'll simply nominate the worse player in the league, outside of my player, and vote for him. If the people aren't genuine in their voting, there will be some error in the process. It is a shame, but a fact.

However, the process can be improved by simply allowing the nominations and voting to occur for 1st and 2nd team.

Peace!!!
