2003 All SWAC Football Team

I agree, Eugene should be there over Carrie. That's messed up. And unless the votes are already in, this might screw up his Payton award chances, too. Unless the voters are very clear minded and are able to overlook what his own conference has done, I doubt many of them will vote for him as I-AA player of the year when the conference he plays in hasn't voted him All-SWAC.

Regards.

There is some big time disdain for Grambling in the SWAC. Bruce had a better year in '03. His passing yds are down, but passing for 4500 yds/yr is not realistic as teams know what is coming.

Bruce completed over 50% of his passes (better than last year), and his TD/Int ratio is above every QB in the SWAC despite more attempts (also has the fewest ints). The SWAC should be embarrassed. Equally as embarrassed as the snub on the UAPB kid (OL) that got drafted last year, and did not make the All SWAC team.

I am LMAO at the All-SWAC team. Pure, B.S., but I can not argue with Quincy Richard. His team is going to the championship game.

The SWAC has just been set back :smh:

Mike,

Technically, he "missed" 1 extra point (may or may not have been his fault) and had one extra point blocked (probably not his fault).

He made his only FG attempt. ;)

Co-sign....thanks Mum

It was the 1st Team kicker that missed a FG and had one blocked in the Classic......

Also, like I said, I'm not mad at him being left off. I thought he had a shot at 2nd, but clearly Johnson deserved it.

Morgan did have the longest FG in the SWAC this year (52) and the longest PAT streak (35), but he was 2 for 10 from 40 plus....

Mike, in your opinion, should Morgan be run out of Gram?

I've always said kickers and punters are out there on an island. Everything they do is seen by everyone. It's not like a lineman who can miss a block and f up a play and only his position coach knows it.....

Bruce doens't make all-swac first team...
eek.gif
This a sad day in the swac.

I must chime in.........

This is a grave error. At the very least, Eugene should have been #2. This is not good.

Eugene(Walter Payton Candidate) not included Marcus Winn(Invited to the Blue gray All Star Game) not included. This just goes to show the SWAC is a.........................nevermind:o

There will always be issues when it comes to DB's and Offensive lineman. The issue often becomes how do you determine who had a great season. A DB with 10 picks or the DB with 0. Because many DB's don't get thrown at when a coach knows they are good cover corners.

But with a QB, WR, and RB, positions where greatness is dictated by stats, there shouldn't be much question of a players skill level. Regardless of offensive scheme, the skill positions are the most popular because the results are tangible.

Now I see many mentioned ommisions based upon the NFL criteria, either being drafted (as were the case last year) or the potential to be drafted with current players. And frankly I don't think that should matter at all. You don't pick all SWAC or any all conference team based on potential. That is what pre-season polls are for. You picked based on results.

Also, the results of the BC had nothing to do with this list either. If that where the case, then O. Bond wouldn't have made the list either.

Again, not to knock Carrie on any level. I like that guy as aplayer, but to not have Bruce Eugen make ALL SWAC has to be one of the biggest ommisiions ever in the history of the conference. It is one that no one can argue with nor defend on any level. The SWAC really dropped the ball.....

I agree. No way Eugene should be omitted. There is no room for debate. Eugene and Richard should have been the only QBs on the All- SWAC list. I had Eugene as 1st team and Q as second team. Oh well. I guess the SWAC has spoken.

I bet there is no sound criteria in selecting OL. The UAPB kid was selected on the 1st day of the NFL draft (if I am not mistaken), and did not make the All-SWAC squad. Nothing. The point is talent should not be obscure, and in the SWAC it apparently is.

Bruce played in the same # of games as Richard, and despite more attempts he has fewr ints. His TD to int ratio is stellar. Quincy led his team to the SCG, so no one can argue 1st team, but Bruce gets nothing. Wow!

I hear what you are sying about the UAPG lineman, but the thing that you are overlooking is that his NFL stock rose after the season. He was not on the radar until his workouts and pre draft camps started to get looks from the NFL. That is not something that you can predict. That is why OL are hard to pick, it will always be difficult.......

a lot of voters are voting off the stats provided and some people did not see every team. As for offensive linemen, it's hard to pick.

Besides 3 schools not being there to vote, what other possible reasons are there for Bruce being omitted? I pose this question to anybody. Also is it possible that bonds received the nod over lee because his name sounds more familiar?? That in itself just does not add up. Anybody that has seen the G-men play this year knows that Lee had a very good year.

I disagree. I feel the majority of the people on TSPN regardless of school feel that Eugene should be first team. All know he should be all-swac.

Wow! The SWAC has done it again. No way a guy with "Bruce Bruce's" stats isn't at least 2nd team all SWAC. Carrie is a nice QB. I've always thought he has performed better than Kent (which he hasn't been receiving credit in the past for), simply because he didn't throw all those interceptions that Kent did. But, the SWAC is a trip and has been at least since the 90's when all of these new coaches started poppin' up in the conference to replace the traditional (Gordon, Robinson, Casem, etc...).

I think this is an issue of the coaches not liking a coach and taking it out on his kids. For example, when Pete was new to the SWAC in the 90's, he was an outsider to the SWAC's coaches. SU was loaded back then, but wouldn't have its kids listed in all SWAC. Later in the years the likes of Levy came along and carried SU not only with stats but with dramatic plays. He got nothing. I can't think of them off the top of my head, but I've seen tens upon tens of examples since the 90's with SU and other school's standout players. So, I think this is a case of Doug has pissed some SWAC coaches off and they are taking it out on "Bruce Bruce" and perhaps his star LB. For example after the Classic, Doug gets in front of the cameras and microphones and says he knows he might lose his job or get fined, but the SWAC refs are the worse in the country. It was like he was trying to say the reason GSU lost this year's classic was due to bad ref calls. Come on Doug... Unlike past SWAC loses, this one wasn't a case of you getting out coached. It was like you said on NBC, "Both teams made plays, but SU made more plays.". SU had the better game, though slightly. I really think Doug has presented himself among the SWAC Coaches as being better than everybody else (like he deserves to be on a higher level than they do) and I think they are taking it out on the kids.

Just my opinion... I hate to see the SWAC do the wrong thing. But, I think this is the first time in all the 10 years or so of All-SWAC injustice that a majority of the people will publicly agree to the injustice.

Peace!!!

I know one coach for sure (Anthony Jones) is mad at Doug for airing it out when the game had already been decided. Jones was quoted as saying "every tiger has it day" after the Shreveport game 2003. Good read and it make you wonder..

Food for thought: Does anyone believe Carrie's stock rose during the last stretch of the season. In my eyes, I saw him leading Alcorn on a serious surge during that period, while it appeared (IMO) that Grambling was coasting. Perhaps as was mentioned in a earlier post, the perception that Eugene had better talent than Carrie also had some effect on the vote.

While Eugene's stats are the best we've seen in a long time, and for some of us ever, I think more goes into the vote than stats. If that was the case, how could any receiver make the team and his QB not make it. Somebody got the ball to him. How could a running back make All-SWAC and not most of his linemen. Stats don't always tell the whole story.

My $.78!

and yet, another great post. Maybe Doug does feel he's better than the other SWAC coaches. That NFL status may have something to do with it.

This arguement just doesn't hold weight when you are talking about the skill position players. The glamour positions are that because of the attention they receive, and because as I stated earlier, their production is tangible. When it comes to these positions, greatness is defined by stats and numbers. Name me a great QB that doesn't have the numbers to follow, same with WR's, and RB's. So carrie made big wins, but you say Eugene didn't? What Big wins, besides SU, did Carrie have that justify his selection over Eugene? And what if GSU was coasting, we coasted because the teams Alcorn was gaining "big wins" over, we had already beaten. ALL SWAC is an award for a season of work, not a "big game", or several "big games" for that matter. And over an entire season of work vs. the same teams (in conference) Eugene had one of the greatest in SWAC history........

But Bruce Eugene doesn't make All SWAC? Over Carrie at Alcorn? Are you kidding me? The man is a finalist for the Walter Payton award, the 1-AA Heisman, yet he can't even make ALL SWAC. This is more than just school pride, this is an outright travesty.

And Where is Mose Harris at WR, at least 2nd team. He is 3rd in the SWAC in receiving, and he can't make ALL SWAC either?

And Pettway at LB can't make it? This pick can be argued, but the previous two, there is no argument!

Couldn't agree with you more.

Carrie over Bruce??

Didn't Bruce torch Carrie and the rest of the tribe 40-28???

Naw dude, trust me that's not Jone's style. He's not that petty. Even to this day he praises the play of Eugene.

Wait a minute Suge, I didn't say Alcorn had big wins or say Grambling's were not big, I said they had a good surge down the stretch, while it seemed Gram coasted.

You're right, the numbers go with the top players, but I still say the numbers don't tell the whole story. Bruce has the best numbers of all QB's, but not all will agree he's the best in the league. If we can't agree to this on the board, what makes you think the voters (coaches and SID's) will be any different. If there are 20 voters, you'll get 20 different reasons for the votes.

While looking at the numbers for any QB I think you have to take in consideration the factors working with and against him. Did he have a good line or did he run for his life all season. Did his receivers make plays, get free, come back for balls, or were all his passes dead in the numbers? Did his backs pick up a lot of yards after catches or were they in the down field routes? Did defenses sit back and let the short stuff go, or did he throw over the top?

I think Bruce got jobbed also, but I also think Carrie forced the issue with the wins at the end of the season. They may not have been pretty, but they were wins. If Eugene & Richard didn't win games, would they be considered great QB's?

Some thoughts...

I don't think Doug was criticizing the officials in an attempt to offer an excuse for losing the classic. I think that was just the culmination of a year long frustration at bad calls. Everyone mentions how bad the officiating is in the league...Doug just aired it on public. I wouldn't have done so in that setting, but Doug is more outspoken than most.

I honestly don't think that Doug thinks he's more than anyone else. Doug can be very gracious and accomodating, but he can also be distant. I'm sure he's had his share of folk seeking to "get over" and that has made him somewhat distant. But Doug is really an ok dude.

Perhaps the past articles about Eugene not being enuff of a leader or too much of a nice guy influenced the Coaches and SID's. Don't think those coaches and SID's don't read TSPN. (Dayum you Kenn Rashad) lol!

Mike Bigg,
I don't care if Doug called the SWAC buffoons or if every coach and SID hates him, you don't penalize the kids. I have had the occasion the speak to Doug a couple of times and he is nothing like what you see on TV. Hey he's in coaching mode. LOL. Casem and Gorden were not as intense off the field either when you talk with them. Even Pete has a somewhat different demeanor off the field. So all this prejudice against Doug is stupid if that's indeed what happened.

Eugene played his arse off this year. He deserved no less than 2nd team and in my eyes I would have picked him 1st team. Even though Quincy had a career year. But to pick Carrie over him is a travesty. No way to look around it.

I hope the SWAC realizes how much they look like buffoons. SMH

No, Doug is cool. He is a good guy. But, he allows his emotions to allow him to say things he probably would prefer to have not said. For example in the interview with NBC after the game, in his complimenting of Richard and the offense, he slipped and referred to Richard's passes (very accurate) as thrown up balls. That's the type of stuff the white folks say about black QBs to discredit the talent of their performance. He knows better, but he was very unhappy with his loss and that is when he let's his mouth say things he shouldn't.

If he meant over the year, he should have qualified the refs have been the worse in the country THIS YEAR. To not qualify it places the reference to the game he is discussing with the media (in this case, the 2003 Bayou Classic).

In the part of MS that I grew up, I use to be able to watch Alcorn, JSU and GSU's weekly play back shows. When Casem, Gordon, and Robinson spoke of playing their opponents, especially each other, they were very respectful. They spoke of the savy and well prepared their teams had to be to play against the other. They spoke of how good of a coach they would be going against. After the game, they spoke as highly of the other coach again and refer to their ability to win as they players rising to the occassion and making key plays for them. I recall the host occassionally inquiring about a questionable call. They would say something about how it could have been called different. But, you have to play through those or you have to try and not be in a position where those calls matter.

It is something he probably is still learning. Remember, Doug is really still a young coach. He hadn't been doing this a long time. Yet, those types of things can rub other coaches wrong.

Peace!!!
