1942 Grambling Football

Could it be that most of *ramblin*'s schedule was won by forfiet due to the war? This is interesting!!!!

I didn't want to say it because I didn't want to be accused of being a "hater." :( But that sure is interesting isn't it?

Where the former Gers @? :smh:

Smoke and Mirrors send help! :shame:

That link says the same thing 'tbf' started. There are 6 wins by a score of 6-0. Who were those 6 wins agnst. The record says unknown. Does anyone know?

If I'm not mistaken, when a football game is forfieted, the winner wins by a score of 6 - 0. Did gram only play 3 games that year and win the rest by forfiet?

I think my school was one of them.

No Branch/AM&N/UAPB was not a victum. But Alcorn was, maybe they have records. Possibly they had a common foe.

In 1941 Grambling (then known as Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute) hired Robinson to coach football and basketball and teach physical education. In his first season he had no assistants and no budget for replacing equipment. He handled virtually everything himself, from mowing the field to taping players' ankles to writing accounts of the games for the local newspaper. That season his team posted a record of 3?5. The next season, however, he guided the team to a perfect 8?0 record.

Robinson's Grambling Tigers went on to have two more perfect seasons,

You are right I do believe. I was even thinking maybe the remainder of the season was cancealed.
I hope they were straight out wins, but I am beginning to doubt it. I guess that in the 2 other perfect seasons, the team was scored upon.

was this team unbeaten and unscored on? If any of you have it, list the schedule...You weren't in the SWAC yet and the media guide records don't include the 1942 season so who exactly did you play?
Most persons on this board know tht this Golden Lion is a big fan of Coach Rob. But. It is beginning to seem to me that because of the war the season was called off. Possibly Coach did not call his season off and the other schools did. Therefore he won by forfieture.
That is not a bad thing. It is what I would have done, but I hope it is not the case.
Come on Gram fans, check the records. Are there records from that far back? Let us know.

This is not true.

Then what is the deal SOGGY? Those of us who love coach and GSU want to know. pm me if you want. I know sports board talk finds its way to the smack board but I want to know even if I have to promise secrecacy.
You have to admitt that what I described makes sense.

Exactly. What is the truth?

Growing up in N. LA, I heard a lot about E. Rob and his glory teams. I think most of us took what we heard as 'face value' and believed it and didn't question it. But it is ironic that this 'website link' shows 6 unknown wins by the same score agnst. nobody. It also shows that grambling only had 1 more undefeated season. Is this history correct. We all know that grambling has a great history in football, but what is correct.

Even before Gramlinites, let me say that there is no doubt about those glory teams or coach Rob. Know one can alter the records. The victories are there and illrefutable. This one season may have talked about in a light that glorifies the school. Yet I bet the victories are real.
If I schedule a team and they do not show, then they lose. I count that as a victory and I talk about my season in terms of victories over that team and any other team that was defeated.

Here some simple things to notice while looking at their website. The first thing that stands out is this obvious fact that most of you are looking over under the notes section: Grambling St. won - score unknown. If it was a forfiet, they most likely would have indicated it there. Also, even in forfiets the other school's name is still listed, which is not the case here. Just to go a little further... If you also look in the year before, 1941. There are both games that Grambling won and lost that appear the same way. In addition, if you look at any other school for the season of 1942 you will see they have a complete year. Meaning if you take all that I indicated above into account. The season obviously wasn't cancelled due to the war.

But continue on... Have fun

Mike Bigg, you were probably in school then, don't you remember?????:tophat: :tophat:

Your post highlights exactly what most of the debate centers on, about
Grambling being unscored upon. They're all actually listed as GSU victories with the score being unknown, that casts more doubt on if they were actually not scored against. With the teams and scores being unknown, it's virtually impossible to settle this debate.

In other words, gram won the games but 'this website' doesn't know the teams and final outcome. OK. Cool.

See, Lewis, you had to start some mess. We are trying to have an intelligent and fact finding discussion.

So, Mike is it in your year book?

I understand that. I was responding more to the theory of the season being cancelled by the war and the games actually not being played.

I also agree that without the information of schools and scores then the answer to such questions will just have to linger on unless evidence presents itself. Most likely the evidence will not be on the internet anyway but rather in paper form, which the majority of us would not have access to.

Another possibility, remember the team who locked arms and jersies before that was illegal? I would not be surprised that Coach did not do something totally unique and unheard of.
Keeping the ball
No play clock

Southern and Grambling first met on the gridon in 1932.

1932 Southern20-0
1933 Southern 20-0
1936 Southern 34-0
1939 Southern 39-0
1946 Southern 38-0
1947 Grambling 21-6
1948 Southern 18-0

Same sscore twice. That looks suspicious.

the record is kind of hard to believe but its coach rob so its possible, I think michigan went untied and unscored upon to in 1901
