The Originators of Stomp & Shake, WSSU is the foundation of the HBCU style of Cheerleading. Coined by the name, CHEER PHI, this dynamic cheerleading program's innovation of creative choreography, uptempo beats and their bass powered tones echoing thru Winston-Salem have brought fans to their feet in Bowman Gray Stadium for decades and around the nation! The history of the WSSU Cheerleading program dates back to the 50's with funky rhthyms and style. In the mid 1970's Deborah Rivers returned to the program in which she cheered to become the Head Cheerleading Coach and create the phenomenon we call Stomp & Shake Cheerleading. In 1994, the alumni cheerleaders of WSSU took the field for the first time, wowing the crowd of fans that had come near and far! In 2005, the WSSU Cheer Alumni Chapter was officially created in cohesion with the WSSU Alumni Association. Branching off on its own several years later, the WSSU Cheer Alumni Chapter is an organization under WSSU Athletics with over 140 members. Over the years, the Winston-Salem State University Cheerleaders' showmanship has landed them in national publications while buzzing throughout social media as the "Most Viewed HBCU Cheerleaders" on Youtube.
The Originators of the "Jiggle-Pop", with the fastest shakes in cheerleading history, the WSSU Cheerleaders have incorporated traditional cheerleading stunts and tumbling with intricate arm motions and footwork. Its no secret how much of a POWERHOUSE WSSU Cheerleading is NOW and FOREVER MORE! We've Got the POWER of the POWERHOUSE!
Its called SURVIVAL!!!!
