If HBCUs want to appeal to the best black athletes get better coaching by being more diverse

We all know most HBCU coaches are stuck at HBCUs not because of race but because they aren't good coaches. And, if you don't know you must be in denial. After watching the North Dakota State vs. A&T extended highlights it's high-time more HBCUs hire the best coaches regardless of race. The football talent mostly black coaches are wasting at HBCUs is criminal.

Those of us that think objectively have noticed this for years. Unfortunately, the power machine at most HBCUs don't think this way.

That machine is still hiring coaches based on friendships or ones that run in the same circles. I'm not saying we need to hire a whole bunch of White coaches but we do need to step outside of our comfort zone of just recycling SWAC, MEAC, CIAA and SIAC coaches.

That tide is changing at some of our schools.

BTW.... There are some upcoming OOC FCS games that will really expose our coaches.

Accountability. Simple as that.

Alcorn didn't attract more white players cause of Hopson - I hardly recall any outside of specialists - Albany State looked Just as black this weekend with a white coach

the average white kid that can play will hold out as long as they can before even thinking about an hbcu - they'll go D2 first

Why do the good black kids sign with white coaches and school to make them look better is the issue

I agree that HBCUs must ensure that the best coaches are hired. In many ways the athletic coaching profession is like other professions in that a coach must be mobile and willing to relocate to acquire new skills and to build a network. With regard to North Dakota State, they have consistently competed at the top of FCS football. There are no FBS football teams in the state of North Dakota. The Bison not only have some of the best coaches they have one of the best football programs in FCS.

NDS has at least one or more analysts, quality control and strength & conditioning coaches. With there being no FBS team in the state, they get the offensive linemen in the state. Alot of the skilled positions are filled from out of state recruits.

Okay. I know the last WR that went there and was drafted is from Tampa. He went to Plant High and had no offers but NDSU. See to find a kid like that and turn him into a pro is something that theoretically HBCUs don't even have to do because they are geographically located in the midst of virtually all of the football talent in the U.S. For a kid like that to leave Tampa makes me wonder where were the HBCUs?

On the flip side ... NCAT was Tarik Cohen's only offer, correct?

I dont agree with this. Our coaches don't have what others have. Dabo Swinney sucked til he got his roster right. We have to do the things to build our programs.
Also, this is such a C*O*O*N topic. You must be from the MEAC.
Well, I was referring to assistant coaches in my response. There are quality assistant coaches out there and we should be going after them, regardless of their race.

Just curious, how do you feel about the 6 White assistant coaches on JSU's staff?

Honestly, I hadn't noticed or counted. As long as I think we have a good coach, Im ok with it. My only gripe last year was that I thought Coach O was a better oline coach than what we have but the oline coach has more to work with this year and this line looks good in this system.

Cool - sounds like we are of the same mindset.

Unfortunately, there is still this 1980s mindset at some of our schools of bypassing "qualified" White assistant coaches to hire "unqualified" Black assistants.

JV I agree. But in the back of my mind the question needs to be asked, what makes a qualified coach? Can anyone here tell me exactly what that is.

Take for instance.... Someone with a nice amount of experience and proven track record at the collegiate /pro level compared to someone without that experience but local ties to your school. It is definitely not cut/dry but that is just an example.

More coaches fail than are successful regardless of color. Nothing wrong with our coaches, it is all about opportunity. Do you think Prime and Jackson would have gone to a HBCU with no hall of famers or the legacy of GSU.

So Coach Prime and Coach Robinson and Coach George were not quality hires??

Hiring the best coach, regardless of race shouldn’t be an issue. With that said, there are TONS of trash white coaches as well.

Who get nonstop SHOTS. Be it head coach or assistant.
At times more shots than our black coaches who have winning records or success.

While every hire is a risk-it seems funny everyone will take those risks with white coaches more than black ones. Look at college basketball.

POST SEASON for some.
Better networking for others.
Better shot at the pros (more basketball than football to be honest)

What HIGH SCHOOLS are those kids coming from? Or in some cases what charter school are they coming from?
If they are at a black high school (LACKING stuff) and play white schools (with stuff)-where do you think they will go?

Along with recruiters. How many recruiters from PWI are at their school versus a black one?

I think you totally missed where I referenced "assistant coaches". IMO, these positions make or break a program more than the person at the top. The key is finding the right HC that is willing to bring in competent and qualified assistants.
