Deion Sanders calls HBCU money games ‘ultimate sellout’ in rant about continued practice

All I know ... these money games are gonna dry the hell up in a few years when the Power 5s shut off that spigot.

Also ... what is the current athletics fee your students pay? When was the last time the students increased those fees?

We have to grow our enrollment for obvious reasons. A sneaky reason is more students = more student fee money generated.

Ausberry decided the teams were stable enough to compete, and he believed LSU’s first football game against an HBCU opponent might help bridge the divides. LSU and Southern agreed to a $700,000 guarantee with an additional $60,000 payment to Southern’s athletic foundation and 800 complimentary tickets.

“It does start a healing process,” Ausberry said, “from things in the past.”

Verge needs to stop all that capping! I saw this game as a money game and that's it. Once I saw all the Democrat politicians and the black mis-leadership class slobbering all over this game my stomach flipped upside down. This game served as a means to act like Baton Rouge is united or becoming united and it was a pay day for some of these buzzard ass people who live off of ignorant Louisianians. I'm talking about politicians and/or the black mis-leadership class. And, then once I saw how happy so many SU fans were to be able to go to a game in Tiger Stadium and see their team slaughtered it just reaffirmed to me that many black people are happy as long as white liberals and Democrats acknowledge them and invite them into their "house."

Prime is going to run into the "Ole Black Boys" click that runs HBCUs. This group of black men who run most HBCUs are in place to keep HBCUs producing blacks who don't have an ownership mentality.

Often times I talk to our leaders about the total picture. If you just count the money, you will never be told what really happens. UAB 33,000 and Troy 25,000 to 30,000. Coach Prime blowing off steam will not get the job done. When you are trying to fill 48 non-conference game for an entire conference it creates a problem. I have always been for SWAC playing SWAC schools. Council of President voted to keep the money in the conference, but fans won out with the 7 games schedule. PWIs don't mind playing cupcakes.

The fans don't like them but the schools get the bigger picture.

I see the same thing in basketball every year especially with BYU or Utah fans complaining about playing Valley. The ADs know you can't have an OOC full of Duke's and Florida's

a couple of things.
fbs vs fbs games count toward bowl eligibility all the time. fbs vs fcs don't always count towards a schools bowl eligibility(if you don't offer 90% of the scholarships it doesn't count which is why some of our schools couldn't get a fbs game previously). that makes the former more valuable and thus a higher payout. you can not like that but that's the reality. we do bring more fans so a aamu vs troy or uab match up, that is going to fill their stadium should lead us to ask for more than they would pay any other fcs program but it's not going to be 700k yet alone a million.
I don't want to play the flagship institution under any circumstances. I don't care how much southern got paid because it wasn't enough. I changed the channel after the opening kick off debacle. no lsu, def not alabama. ole miss is scared to play jsu I'd imagine anyway.
I didn't like the fact that prime gave these comments at the end and no one had an opportunity to respond. he actually said bama state probably blew 590k traveling to LA. did anyone ask cable or robinson? no. do we know if ucla paid for their travel? for the bands travel? for their expenses while they were out there? so potentially they came out a lot better than... spending it all on travel.
lastly if we want to get paid more we can move up. we can get 2 million & better yet (and a 12 game) , we can get these teams in our stadium (as oklahoma had agreed to play at famu years ago) if we are fbs programs. they want to play and win in our footprint so they can recruit. we can host, make a ton of money and attempt to put a foot in it while showing recruits and our fanbase that we're about that life.

All I will say is...."Coach Prime's Market Value" vs. "SWAC Conference Market Value" vs. "JSU Market Value" vs. "Any other HBCU's Market Value"

They are not the same....

Money conversations will change based on which "Market Values" are in play during negotiations with those with the money...

The higher the perceived "Market Value" that you have....the more you can determine the rules of engagement.

My only caution would be to be wise in dealing with the entities that supported HBCU's when they weren't as popular as they currently are. Our popularity goes in cycles....as soon as the "powers that be" decide to turn the "national light" back off on HBCU's...we will be looking back at those entities that have supported us.

Leverage the value while maintaining respect for those entities that have supported HBCUs when they were not as popular...

look at it like this (change classic teams out)

JSU-Tennessee State at home in a driving rain and you budgeted $500K every other year

JSU-Tennessee State in Memphis with rain with a yearly guarantee?

who's ready to take that gamble?

Coach Sanders has a good point from a coaches’ perspective but not from an administration’s standpoint. It’s all about negotiations for the Athletic Directors of these programs. They make and sign the deals (not coaches). And you have to remember, There are levels to the payouts that are different for FCS and FBS teams.

Usually P5 FBS teams play and pay FCS teams between $350,000-$500,000.

If you get more than that , then additional negotiations were made. For example, Southern getting $750K from LSU was clutch. More money is coming later on from television revenue. LSU gave McNeese $500K last year.

Every once in a while you get FCS teams who hit the jackpot. Tennessee State will get $1 Million from Notre dame next season. All because the Athletic Director worked out a better negotiation that includes scholarship banquets/fundraisers leading up to the game along with additional TV money from it being on NBC.

Another large payment was FAMU getting $900K from Ohio State in 2015.

When Group of 5 FBS teams (CUSA/Sun Belt) play FCS programs, the FCS teams only get about $250,000 & $350,00. For example, AAMU just got close to $400K from UAB & $350K from TROY in their first two weeks.

When P5 FBS teams (SEC/Big 12) play Group of 5 FBS teams (CUSA, Sun Belt, more money can be allocated for the Group of 5 teams due to agreements made by the larger schools. That’s why all those Sun Belt teams made over $1.2 million this past weekend.

What was he wrong about from an administrative perspective? That we should get less money?

Prime knows about the administration perspective. Y’all just don’t realize how close he is with our AD and the relationship he has with administrators that educated him on all these things. He’s fully aware of all y’all are saying. His point still stands that we should get more money for these games regardless of the perspective you look at it.

Reading is fundamental. The question has already been answered.

Nothing in @TvSportsGuy21’s response answered @MetroPhillyTiger’s question of should we stick with less money than what we are worth tho. I assume you believe we should get less money too, since that’s the “norm”? … that’s the point of his question

It's the messenger not the message.
Don't waste your keystrokes responding to his statement.
