SWAC announces to postpone all 2020 fall sports due to COVID-19

Now if we can get our alma maters to cancel in-person classes that'll be great. Texas Southern came up with some BS plan about how they gonna keep the campus safe for students/faculty/staff but still have many classes showing more than 70 students enrolled which goes against their safety initiatives.

Like just let it go. If Harvard couldn't figure out how to bring people back safely with their infinite resources, how is TSU and other schools gonna do so? Makes no sense

I am not in favor of spring football (really only about 3 months for an offseason) BUT I can see the huge potential upside of it especially with the SWAC possibly being the only D1 conference with a plan thus far for it and filling the post Super Bowl void

Throw in the bands and you could have something special that Dr. Mac can take to ESPN and ask for a blank check

I am interested to see how it all plays out with all of the regular spring sports. So during the spring semester, we are going to play football, basketball, baseball, softball, track n field, soccer, volleyball, cross country, bowling, and tennis? Will all sports see a shortened season like football? Will winter sports like basketball be pushed back? Going to be interesting! I personally could support a season cancellation of some of the minor sports or of a shortening of their seasons.

Assuming that you keep everything the way it is concerning fall sports...

Cross country generally run on Saturday and usually no more than 3-4 hours away.

Soccer generally plays on Friday and Sunday (conference wise) with Valley usually playing one Thursday game to accomodate for Homecoming (but that's gone now)

Volleyball matches are generally on Sunday and Monday on campus with roundups on weekends

The main reason I am against fall sports in the spring is that our athletic training staffs are gonna be spread SO THIN so I have to imagine a temporary expansion to accomodate ESPECIALLY on Saturdays with football, softball and baseball DHs as well as track and field and cross country meets

That's a double edge sword. Because if you mandate no classes on campus, you mandate a lower cost to the students for tuition and fees. Those tuition and fees goes to pay for a lot of items on our campuses. I'm not talking about room and board but the other items that go to pay employee salaries, utilities and other items for day to day operations. You also got to look at students being able to have labs to do research and other items in. I couldn't imagine taking any of my biology, chemistry & physic classes without access to our weekly lab sessions.

If they can't practice this fall how will they have time for conditioning for spring ball? JSU must have some seniors Hughes really want to play to risk the athletes like he says

Well if winter sports are still a go, then you have those sports condition at the same time

Public institutions don't have to worry about going under, especially due to COVID-19. When the last time you heard a public college or university closing due to lack of funds? We pay so much in taxes for a reason and don't believe the lie that this country has limited resources ... far from the truth.

It's so easy to underestimate how much power and wealth this country has because the misinformation pushed out there and our bad leadership.

Not saying that they would go under but layoffs and furloughs are coming. Public schools don't get all of their funding from taxes. Students pay a good amount of money to attend these schools and that money go to support the staff that work at these schools. Don't think that thre is a pipeline of money going to our schools because it's not.

Why do you think that our schools are always asking for donations to support their efforts to keep certain areas funded?

I called it in April when I said McClelland didn't want any blood on his hands. The rising case numbers in SWAC cities and potential outbreak at swac sporting events was a recipe for sure death and sadness. IMO this fall/winter will be all about human survival not Swac football..because the worst of this pandemic is on the way.

That A&M education is paying off... LOL! I agree that we are in for hell this fall unless our uhhh fellow citizens get a grip on what having individual rights actually means. Young people, too, have to realize that being free isn’t really free. “No one can tell me what to do” is one of those ignorant myths that we allow people to spout off without comment. But this thing is teaching a hard lesson that will get harder unless we get smart. I’m glad the SWAC is trying to get it right.

I don't see why fees would go down automatically because of no on-campus classes. Maybe the rec center fees or other amenity fees but not the tuition and fees related directly to academics. A lot of our schools had to do major upgrades to their technology infrastructure in order to accommodate fully online schedules.

Also, I've seen where some schools are still allowing in person labs and clinicals for certain courses.
