If SWAC Football Season is Canceled...........

We know football is the "cash cow" at most institutions and especially SWAC schools. Often the revenue generated by football helps to fund the non-revenue-generating sports programs. How will the absence of football affect the survival and/or viability of SWAC athletic programs going forward?

I've already put it out there in the universe that all of these "let's send our top athletes to HBCU" advocates a couple of weeks ago need to open up their wallets and donate

The people out there a lot smarter than me need to get together and do a fundraiser that will replace the money lost if the season is cancelled so that our department can stay afloat with no fall sports. The same goes for alums who were crying about the season needing to be cancelled and then disappear

Southern University, apparently in anticipation that this was forthcoming, has already initiated its first virtual athletic fundraiser of the season to take place on August 3, 2020.

You have to take in account that expenses would be drastically reduce due to travel and other cost related activities, but scholarships and coaches salaries wouldn't change.

If at least 100 alumni of each institution commit to giving at least $20 a month that adds up to $2,000 a month.

People always say this but all the data Ive seen points to all sports being products of university subsidies. Most football programs at this level are able to generate it's annual expenses and break even.

This is why most presidents and academics are anti-athletics. The funding it takes to field D1 sports doesn't always justify the cost (in their eyes) because it doesn't add a net gain academically.

Very interesting! I have heard the data on that as well!

Matanzas Inlet. North of Flagler Beach in Florida. Back to back also.... Around the same time, a gentleman next to me had his pole pulled over the bridge into the water.
I've had that happen to me. I was fighting on bull red and did not have my other reel in free spool with clicker on. Lost a rod I was using for the first time and a reel that was a gift.

Wow. Here's the good part...He was still fishing with his other pole for about 30 minutes or so. He got hung up and reeled in some line. He kept reeling and low and behold..his pole with no fish! I've had one drug into the water when I was reading a book. Had twp poles...looked up and one was gone. 2 bull reds. Lost one.

You have a point there! However, I really think it depends on the particular institution. Some schools like SU may generate enough income over and above its expenses, at least during some years, to offer some degree of support to other sports,. I do know that there have been years past when SU football was considered to be self-supporting. But by and large those other sports are subsidized from other university funds. Power 5 schools and the like are those institutions to which the said expression applies.

I think some of the pandemic money the schools receive from the Federal & State Government should go to sports.
