Clemson Football Wins on the Field But Can’t Compete on Profit.

(Bloomberg) -- Clemson University stands out among the four teams playing in this weekend’s college football semifinals. It’s the only school to make each of the last five playoffs and has more national championships in the past 15 years than the others combined.
Financially, however, the Tigers aren’t in the same league as others in college football’s royalty. They enter this weekend’s semifinals earning just a fraction of what other playoff teams generate annually.
Clemson made a $7.6 million profit on football in fiscal 2018, according to documents obtained through open-records requests. That’s dwarfed by the University of Oklahoma’s $73.3 million, Ohio State University at $64.6 million and Louisiana State University‘s $55 million

New Orleans hate to see this matchup. LSU fans are not going to spend money at New Orleans hotels and Clemson fans have nowhere near the money to spend compared to Ohio State fans. The National Championship game will be another down year for New Orlean hotels.

They don't have the class of Ohio State fans either. The hospitality/restaurant workers always complain about how trashy LSU and Bama people are compared to OSU

But you will never see viral posts of "them" trashing LSU or Alabama. Only the Bayou Classic
You know it, they wouldn't dare put them on blast and blame everything wrong with New Orleans on LSU and Bama like they do with the Bayou Classic. lol

I live in clemson. this town will be empty about 3 days before the game. As many as my coworkers that they can cover will be out so they can go to new orleans for the game. I can't figure out how they pay for all the trips. I'm a teacher & work with... teachers & they follow that team everywhere.

As for how much money the athletic department makes, they are doing fine. HC is one the highest paid in the country. They have some of the newest and best athletic facilities in the country. their walk ons get treated better than our scholarship athletes.

The only issue they really have is recruiting black students in general. Last year they had less than 100 black men in their freshman class out of a class of about 4 or 5k. Most of those were athletes. that is ridiculous.

I hate going off topic here, but is it because they don't try, or they try but black students are not that interested in attending Clemson?

They only want us for athletics. The only time, power-5 school came to my high school was too recruit.

almost no scholarship money. my son, had he chosen to go to sc state with his grades & act score it would have been free but they're computer science department appears a bit limited & .... the black folks on this end of the state are all about clemson. so just on economics it doesn't make a lot of sense. we missed the big scholarship deadlines @ a&t and bama state. so clemson became cheaper. they do recruit but dollars & sense.

I am also torn. I want them to make it more accessible to us but I don't want them stepping on the mission of hbcus.

it would seem that way. the difference between a&t and a clemson can be summed up this way. at clemson there is a statue of the founder, tillman, an avoid racist & I believe a slave owner. @ a&t the statue is of students who stood up to racial oppression.

One thing, we have to start focusing on is economics (not money). Because, southern states are trying to find ways to get out of the HBCU business.

That's almost any P5 school in a town like that. I know at Ole Miss it's apparently 12-13% black (down from 16% about 3-4 years ago) but less that 1,000 stay on campus and about half of those are athletes. It was that way when I was visiting as an undergrad (going to the frat house. Would not sit foot on any other part of that campus lol)

I'm sure most LSU alumni don't live within driving distance. Many will still have to travel and need lodging.

The bars should make a killing. Any establishment that serves alcohol will most likely have a great weekend.

Maybe so, but most LSU fans are not going to pay $200 to $300 a night to stay in some hotel. And a lot of LSU fans who don't live within driving distance have family that do. This has always been the issue with New Orleans when home teams are in the championship game. As much as they support the Saints, they would hate to see the Saints make it to the SB the same year it's in New Orleans. The bars will make money no matter what.
