Does the NCAA's Threat to California Schools' Championship Access Hold Up?

NCAA playing one helluva game of chicken with California, a State with three very large TV markets ... and a very large pool of student athletes its non-Cali members covet

This has always been problem. I don't think you have to pay college athletes but the ban on people profiting off of their likeness quite frankly goes everything a free market country stands for.

I actually believe letting college athletes profit off of their likeness and autographs would be a great start or part of a greater compromise.

In one of the most significant strikes against the National Collegiate Athletic Association's system of amateur athletics, California lawmakers have approved a bill that would allow players in the state to profit off their name, image and likeness.

The adoption of the bill is likely to set up a battle between California lawmakers and the NCAA as the legislation heads to the desk of Governor Gavin Newsome.

The association fiercely opposed the measure. NCAA President Mark Emmert went so far this summer as to insinuate that California institutions would be excluded from championship games if the bill was approved.

The NCAA doesn't want to share the money.

All the California schools have to do is band together and create their own collegiate sports association. Thus giving them the biggest recruiting advantage in the country. Under that circumstance, why would any top high school athlete leave the state to go to school? It wouldn’t matter if you’re at UCLA, USC, Stanford, or even San Diego State, Fresno State, Santa Clara, Cal-State Fullerton or Long Beach State. You’d still have the opportunity to profit from your own image and likeness without risk of losing your scholarship. And don’t think the other top athletes in the country aren’t going to want to leave home and play in Cali as well. The only way to get the NCAA to change is to force their hand.

If people/organizations are making money off their likenesses/names why shouldn't the athlete whose likeness/name is being used not profit? The athletic programs themselves are not paying so that argument is out of the window.

It's a wrap now. NCAA will not be able to put that cat back in the bag. Florida, Pennsylvania, New York, South Carolina and i'm sure many others have either already filed bills to do the same or are about to. States will have no choice but to do the same if they want the top athletes. Way too expensive to live there but one thing about California is they dont give a DAMN when it comes to being progressive.

My question is how will this inevitable trend affect Schools in the SWAC and MEAC as we are also trying to attract top talent? When there is money on the tablet for that talent, will we even be a consideration?

Remember it is state colleges.....this will have a resounding effect on state's budgets. Especially cash strapped states.

Watch what happens when schools start negotiating athletic apparel contracts.

Also, start naming buildings after companies for a yearly check to pay the college student athletes.

Unifroms would start looking like WNBA uniforms with all the advertisements.

Under the Fair Play Act the schools don’t have to pay the athletes a dime. The athletes would only get endorsement money. For example if that sporting goods shop in downtown Grambling wanted Hickbottom to endorse their business they would be able to pay him to do so.
