Two SLC Scheduling Changes (Impact on SWAC)

Two Southland schedule changes were announced at media day. The reason I post this here is because of the amount of games that our respective schools schedule against each other in football, men's basketball and women's basketball.

In football, the Southland is proposing going from 9-game schedules (yep, I hate it!) to 8-game schedules in league play thereby giving the SLC an extra OOC game (three most years, four some years). Emphasis on utilizing that extra game for FCS competition.

I know that there's a few future SLC vs SWAC games on tap with Texas Southern vs Houston Baptist, McNeese vs Southern & Alcorn. Hopefully this rule leads to more. It just makes sense financially and academically to be able to play nearby schools.

In basketball (men's and women's), the Southland is going to go from an 18-game league slate to a 20-game schedule in 19-20 - following the lead of many leagues around the country. Of more significant note to our regional games against SWAC foes, teams are no longer allowed to schedule teams with RPIs over 300. In men's basketball, only 3 SWAC schools would be 'eligible' based off last year and in women's basketball, five would be. The Southland still has 4 schools in both MBB & WBB who can't climb into top 300 itself.

Men (Southland had 9 of 13 teams with sub 300 RPIs)
Texas Southern (212)
Prairie View (245)
Grambling (246)

Women (Southland had 9 of 13 teams with sub-300 RPIs)
Southern (182)
Grambling (210)
Texas Southern (225)
Prairie View (243)
Jackson State (296)

So they won't be able to schedule each other either? SLC only had 3 teams with RPI under 300.

My initial post may not of made sense!

Southland had 9 teams that were sub 300 RPIs (so anywhere from 1-299) on the mens and women's side of the equation that would have conceivably been "scheduled-able" if they were non-league games. On the MBB side, that meant four teams worse than 300 - Corpus (326), Northwestern St (342), HBU (345) and Incarnate Word (347).

Can't avoid league games, but for the SLC schools - it means we can't schedule 70% of SWAC in MBB based off this year.

I'm taking this as an attempt to make the Southland a multi-bid league in the NCAA Tournament. Maybe the SWAC needs to adopt that scheduling policy as well.

I wish this method was about getting multiple teams in but you know as well as I do how the SLC ranks. Like other low and mid majors overhauling their scheduling - it’s all about improving the seed and thereby a chance for a win, more $$$ from NCAA

I like the bball logic.
As for football, it would be great for FCS football IF the SLC could use the extra game vs a fellow FCS school but we all know they will be looking for a pay day. smh

In football, I wish the Swac would go to a 8 game schedule too.

in basketball, wouldn't that make it harder for them to schedule teams years in advance? (exception would be those money games since those teams are usually good with their rpi).
If they had to wait for the rpi's to come out and start working on the basketball schedule, it would make it a year to year scheduling problem.

They’re essentially telling those teams to stop scheduling trash competition OOC. Although 2-3 money games are fine, they’d better schedule and win games against top 150 teams in basketball.

In Football, expect more games featuring the SLC against the Big Sky and MVFC
