All Mississippians should know the legend of Steve McNair

This a great article written by Rick Cleveland a beat writer in MS. While the article talks about McNair, it bridges 1974 - Walter Peyton, 1984 - Jerry Rice and 1994 - Steve McNair and during their era each was the best player in college football and should have won the Heisman Award. There separate HBCUs in this small state out recruited the HWCUs for these three.

I really hate how his life ended. Each time I see Doug Williams I often imagine what it would be like for these to brothers to share a stage together and discuss football. Moreover, I often wonder if he would have decided to coach Alcorn.

Each 10 years apart but from a different MS school. Dope.

I also wonder, if he was still alive, would Alcorn have still settled for the lesser McNair.
JaySBlue that's an interesting insight. I would say that history may have been different meaning there probably would not have been a Jay Hopson.

I still remember sitting at home watching him on ABC in that prime 3PM CST slot when I was younger.

He had a subpar game by his standards against SHSU but still almost went for 400 yards

Unfortunately his success made other schools rethink the qb position and take chances on athletes.

Once our leagues get that one lifetime player you never get another one now.

Never got another Ricky Weeks in baseball

I don't think its that one life time player and you don't get another one. Believe me somebody will but it may not be as quick as we want it to happen. However, if his family had not attended Alcorn I don't think we had a chance to get him either. Peyton and Rice came along in a different era where HBCUs could still recruit a high caliber AA players. Sometimes it pays just to be in the right place at the right time.

The sad part is as black people we have to be damn near perfect. Steve was murdered by his sidepiece and the white folks do not want to place him on that pedastal (sp). It sickens me because we are humans and fuck up.....yet, that should not be Steve's lasting memory. I have not been to Alcorn but there needs to be if not...more things to show his accomplishments.

We have to keep his memory alive.

Steve had some good blocking from the lineman and the receivers were catching everything.

amazing game, should probably be posted in the Alcorn vs Southern 1994 thread.
No lie I was losing my mind just like the other fans in the video 😂
