Why do black parents continue to send their athletic children to HOSTILE predominantly white univs?

Our schools have made great strides but we can't handle the volume of students that would migrate back to us and most of us moved out to these suburbs and our kids are used to that type of life and hanging around those kids. They're assimilated as you wanted them to be..

I see it in Grambling. We have Lincoln Prep which is formerly Grambling High. Most people who graduated from Grambling High are angry about the name and relationship with GSU.

I was skeptical at one time but now that my son goes there I have seen what they are doing and quite frankly there is not a school in Lincoln Parish that can compete. Hell is my kids makes a 21 on the ACT by his sophomore year he could start taking college courses and earn an Associates Degree when he earns his high school diploma. Also, they have agreements with SU Shreveport, Northwestern, La Tech, LSU Shreveport and GSU. This is a school that is 99% black but we have black folks hating on the school because of some personal mess.

Besides the obvious money under the table, most see Pookie as their ticket out of the hood and sending them to Tricky Nicky (Saban. Thanks Papi) and Dabo is the best way to get there despite their obvious flaws and the racist schools that they work for.

Then we have our own who graduated from HBCUs who won't even give us a look. We are probably 2-3 decades in where this has been happening. Cari Champion always comes to mind. Parents went to SU. She ended up at UCLA. She looked out of place at the 1st Celebration Bowl.

As I and others have suggested it's gonna take that 1 person/class to get the ball to rolling (don't think these hateful PWI people won't go down without a fight though)

I can't get upset at a top notch athlete going to a school with all the resources and connections to get him into the pros. Hell, most of our schools cant even shake the APR bug, much less provide the nutrition and training programs at Power 5 schools.

Its the non-athlete with the 3.7 GPA and 25+ ACT scores passing up HBCU scholarships to take out loans at PWIs.

No pride!
A top Notch athlete is a Top Notch Athlete.. If a College can Find a Kid at Durant High in Mississippi, then what thinks a Pro Scout Cant Find a Kid? Also What resources and Connections these schools dont have that HBCUs Dont. The NFL cares about talent and Money..

Because as a parent, you can teach them all you want about hbcu's, but when it boils down to it there are very few selling points that you're going to give a kid to make them choose AAMU over Alabama. There's 1000 reasons you could list here for why that happens. Yes, if you're a good athlete you can be found anywhere. But also yes, if you ball out at Alabama you're more likely to go in the first round vs a later one. That's not really even including all the other intangibles like facilities, nutritionists... or for some, even having dedicated position coaches. Being a black school isnt good enough, you have to bring the same things to the table that they do and then you wouldnt have to worry about it. Even things as simple as constantly recycling the same coaches matters.

PWIs can provide those elevated services because of the revenues generated from athletics and superior athletes.

not for basketball. You can make the argument for football but again, these kids come in already made so all Saban is doing is refining and tweaking.

Alabama does not recruit kids of certain sizes and statures to begin with so there's less development they focus on.

I used to ask folks who had kids or close relatives go and none really provided that answer you wanted outside of "it's (insert state school), you gotta go."

No top notch high school athlete will risk his future on low resource institutions, PWI or HBCU.

The only way to get one is thru a fall-down transfer.

In basketball it doesn't matter. Some of these cats do prep schools or play overseas in worse gyms. Ben Simmons would have been the #1 pick regardless of where he played in college for 1 year.

That's why I think it will happen in basketball first as long as the one and done rule is around. China will be another option and then the G League if the money continues to increase for them. At least there they can get some real tweaking that can prepare them for the NBA

Dennis Smith did a 1/4 step with the HBCUs Matter shirt but went to NCSU

So how does schools like Wisconsin-Green Bay, Central Arkansas & Grand Canyon do it? Winthrop's budget is LOWER than Southern and a few other HBUCs. Yet they have been to the basketball tourney 9 out of 17 years since 2000. Southern has 3 trips.

So how are they getting players to do that? Cold it be money is not being spent right? All those beat down games should do something right?

Okay, so since your friends had no issues there is no racism....okay I get it.

No, I didn't say that. It is racism. But it aint like it's more than working in Corporate America or hell even owning your own business but dealing with them other folks. Bottom line is you can't hide from it. Confront it and move on. Isn't that what Dr. King died for? I realize folks dealt with racism in the military. Hell I saw it. But it is how you deal with it that makes you a strong black man or woman. You don't run and say let me just go hang with my own kind because it makes them other folks uncomfortable for me being at the damn table. They fugged up. Shouldn't brought my ancestors to this mofo. Now, not only am I going to be at the table. I am going to bring more with me. One of the reasons I do what I do. I love seeing more and more brothers and sisters at Annapolis. Wesley Brown would be proud.

No football for WGB and GCU but UCA has never been a basketball school. GCU is for profit with 20K students and 57K when you add online. You can use that to spend more in development. Plus they have access to another talent pool freely with hesitation

This is the same argument white bigots make. You had a Black president so there is no racism.......o_O

Man yall worry about them other folks too damn much. Fugg the bigots. Aint nobody scared of them. I don't listen to them I keep pressing on. And who said there was no racism. Just saying I know a lot of folks who had smooth sailing through those academies. And if they came across some foolishness, they handled it. No different than a black man or woman has to do in Corporate America.

Well it's one of your famous "damned lie" you told on here...now let's be clear I knew you were lying then because that is just how you kick it
First off, stranger, you don't even know my first legal name to even know how I "kick it," stranger. Believe what you may. That's your right, hurricane stranger. Perception from a stranger doesn't fuel anyone's life, hurricane :D . FTR, it was my eldest daughter who accepted an aca schol to duke univ & grad'd 05/15 so "I did not send an athl gifted child to a hostile pwcu on an athl schol," einsteinless duhhhh. An athl schol sho' 'nuff is an aca schol, in that remedial little world down there. smh

Don't spiral into one of your emotional meltdowns and fvck up my weekly picks lol. :D I'm a double-major and know Bernoulli like the back of my hand lololololol as I watch the shenanifvckery machine starting to gain traction.

My wife and I train our son's mind. He has determined what he wants to major in and his career goals.
Naval Academy Football is at an all time high. LOL. If his goal is to serve the military then the Service Academies should be on his list. Then schools with ROTC programs of the service he wants to go to. Sadly most college coaches do not like their College Football Players in ROTC taking away from their practice time. So if he wants to play football and get ready for the military. The service academies are the right choice. One thing you do know. They aint going to use him for athletics and throw him out on the street when eligibility is up. If he is there 4 years. He will graduate.

My son is also thinking post military. He wants to be in the FBI, DEA, or another federal service so he figured going to one of the academies would look good for him if he decides to not stay his entire career in the military.

Racism is everywhere....sooner or later our children will face it. We have to fall back on making sure we taught them how to handle it.

Herb racism is everywhere. Should we shield our kids
Now that is really cold.........DAYUM!

Just joking...

You right Tom I don't know your government first name and you right I might just mess up your weekly picks because I am remedial for sending my aca sounded, athl gifted child to a hostile pwcu, where he graduated in 3.5 yrs and enjoying having his grad school classes paid for and even with all the injuries still have a chance to go to the next level and if not guess what he still have will walk away with two degrees and not owe anyone ONE DAMN DIME...Now How is that for a BLACK MAN in today's america!

No one has to tell me racism is everywhere...I have experienced it first hand. Went to an interview once...was all but assured I had the job until the woman saw my face. I could go on an on but I won't.

I never burdened my children with my experiences with racism. Once they (my son in particular) was faced with it I helped him to deal with what happened to him. And before ANY of you assume he is a pants sagging tattoo having earring wearing baggy clothes wearing fellow he has NEVER been into that. He has always been an every two week hair cut getting (edge up in between hair cuts) neatly groomed very particular about his clothes and how they fit kind of fellow (not at all like me in that regard). Glad he is finally out of my pocket with that every two week haircut thing. :)

I just get so tired of hearing all of these apologists for white folks' bad behavior. Some of you were in the military and that is fine. I NEVER wanted to go to the military. That is an experience I never wanted to have...ROTC in high school was enough for me. I was resigned to go IF I was drafted but the draft was ended before my number was called and I was one happy colored person.

You can call me MISTER Tom. Always proud of my son, regardless of his "mammy." He's just like his yr-older step-brother excepting his step couldn't play @ that level past his soph year due to severe sickness, almost life ending, but the folks kept him on athl schol for 6-yrs where he grad'd and is now enlisted overseas. Get outcha' feelings heffa' and stop taking this shit so damned personal. Damned. smh

And being a math major also, you KNOW I'm gonna' watch my picks like an eagle w/ binoculars and hubble telescope @ its disposal lol. You know how emotionally volatile people are.

Mr. Tom all of that was not for you and I am not in my feeling about mine and what we decided was best for him, I'm in my feelings about all these other foolish comments about race issues only occurring at pwc's when we as black people are some of the biggest racists of others and between ourselves, plus we act like if our black athletes come to only our black schools they will not be used and everyone of them will graduate and be help along in life and it is a damn bold face lie!
