Baseball Rosters HBCUs no longer reflect student bodies

Last season, 45.3 percent of the baseball players in the SWAC identified as black, 24.3 percent were listed as Hispanic/Latino and 24.0 percent identified as white. That is quite a contrast from 2007-08 when SWAC baseball was 73.5 percent black, 14.9 percent white and 11.0 percent Hispanic/Latino.

"So we're forced to go out and get players who we may not necessarily want to get but we need to get in order to have a successful program."

Hmmmmm........

I saw that and gasped...He probably meant "we are looking for the best talent available and sometimes that leads to the players outside makeup of our student body." lol

As from HBCUs, there aren't exactly many rosters filled with brothers playing the sport throughout college baseball.

Ok let's be real.....baseball is not like football or even basketball. It's not uncommon to see a kid leave high school and end up playing pro baseball. What a number of HBCUs are doing is recruiting white boys or Hispanics to play to better their chances of better records.

SU, JSU, Gram, and PV are the only teams I saw in the SWAC that are majority black.

Yeah that quote kind of grab my attention also. Look like we have our own personal Donald Trump on our hands.

I mean this is all right all but in truth the schools roster doesn't reflect the student body then where do the players come from?

Off the streets then they go back home or to work? I mean I know what he is trying to say but didn't the students go there and isn't the goal to have a diverse student body?

Notice they never say anything like this about sports like golf, tennis, soccer, or volleyball

Why is this a mystery all of a sudden? Schools like Valley, AAMU and others have majority White and Hispanic players. This has been going on at least for the past five years.
I applaud JSU's coach for not only winning, but showing that he can win with mostly Black players.

The article wasn't a mystery. Anyone who watches baseball period knows this has been a trend for a while at the college and MLB levels. Heck my husband and I talked about it recently during the SWAC Championship game cause neither us nor Bama State have majority black teams (at least not the lineups that day). But that quote is what was a bit startling to read, moreso seeing in writing. It may not have been what Coach meant, but it definitely made me cringe a bit. Trust me, if he had a publicist, he or she would be scrambling trying to correct that statement lol

I didn't read the story but why is this a problem for us but it's not a problem for those PWI's that don't have players in football and basketball full of what reflects their student body.

The only thing I could think of is maybe the writer tried to correlate the declining number of blacks playing baseball at HBCUs to the larger issue of blacks not being a large representation in MLB.

I know for a fact most of Jackson State and Morehouse College players are black. So it's a case by case basis. But the more we live, the more diverse the world becomes. Texas Southern is way less black today than it was when I was on campus .... I see a lot more Hispanics, Asians, and international students and I love it and we all get along.

Good luck to my Tigers against Rice at 2p. I'll be following the game

Because we are HBCU's and it's our tradition to give scholarships to Black players.
Quit making excuses for your coaches not beating the bushes and finding good Black players.

That's why we're in the shape we are now. We allow other folks to come in and take over what we've built up over the decades. They keep their traditions going, but we don't seem to care about ours.

Most of the good black players either play ball at PWIs or are drafted into the league out of high school.

Only 5.4 percent of all college baseball players are black, according to the latest data. That would indicate there isn't a large pool of black players to recruit from.

Some coaches seem to be putting forth more of an effort than others to keep and win with Black players. It's not impossible to do.

It's not impossible to do, but the makeup of the rosters would suggest that many coaches aren't going to hamstring themselves by attempting find just black players when a lot of them aren't out there

I did not read that article, but is there a companion piece about PWIs, where football and basketball no longer reflect their students?

Why is that even a question when we know it's been majority Black players in football and basketball for the last 50 years?
What's an anomaly is how many White and Hispanic players taking over Black college baseball teams. One can include coaches as well.

You call it hamstring, but some seem to have given up altogether.
