Southern seeks strong finish to nonconference schedule
BY LES EAST| [email protected]
Southern concludes its nonconference schedule with two games in the Global Sports Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Southern vs. North Carolina Central

What: Global Sports Classic

When: 3:30 p.m. Monday

Where: Cox Pavilion, Las Vegas, Nevada

The Jaguars (7-4) play North Carolina Central at 3:30 p.m. Monday afternoon and will face either Eastern Illinois or Nebraska-Omaha on Tuesday. After that, they break for Christmas and don’t play again until visiting Texas Southern for the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener Jan. 2.

Southern has been on the road for a week, having lost at Memphis (72-67) on Tuesday and at Louisiana Tech (83-76) on Friday. In both games, the Jaguars had a lead in the second half but got outscored down the stretch.

“We’ve got to zero in on North Carolina Central,” Southern coach Roman Banks said. “We’ve got to put together a good game and try to get back in the win column.”

The Jaguars have lost consecutive games for the first time this season. In both games, Southern was beaten badly at the foul line. The Jaguars shot half as many free throws (40) as their opponents (80) and got outscored by 30 points at the line. They committed 57 fouls and their opponents committed 38.

I dont know if SU is tired, but the Memphis and Latch games were winnable,, i take nothing from NCCU,because they are one of the best squads in the MEAC, but this game should not have been clos... SU is to talented this year, and i know its early, but if Banks don't figure it out I see SU going into the season maybe winning it all, but then screwing up in the tournament honestly

Stop lol, but I agree we didn't play good. I think they are tired. SU haven't been home, they literally been on the road for a week straight. Played Sunday at home and Went to Memphis and played Tuesday to Ruston played Friday to Vegas.

They've been on the road the entire week. Memphis to Ruston to Las Vegas. After this game against Omaha, they'll finally get a break. Anything can happen in the SWAC tournament.

And I still find it funny LSU plays Oral Roberts and American University, but won't schedule us or Louisiana Tech. lol

they're not dumb. they don't want to risk a loss. but yall let them set that precedent in football already so they've just extended it to hoops. keep springing traps on them in baseball and they'll cut that off too.

Lol.

SU had a great non conference schedule this year. I wish more SWAC programs mixed in winnable non conference games with a few money games. I really hate looking at HBCU programs getting killed week in and out for checks.

Good luck to the Jags.

We have a similar schedule, we just don't win the winnable games, the one I was sure we would lose we won Va Tech.

lots of new faces for the hornets. bigs, other than holloway haven't really contributed. they have been letting teams light them up from 3. played better against Coastal. The winthrop game will be interesting. Winthrop's starting center out w/ broken wrist.
Va Tech was really Lew's first sig win. first over P5 team. hopefully they'll come more often now.

Owls Drop Overtime Thriller to Texas Southern

Dec. 21, 2015

TSU 69-Rice 66 OT

HOUSTON - A furious comeback by the Rice Owls women's basketball team came up just short in a dramatic 69-66 overtime loss to Texas Southern Monday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse.

Rice (1-9) rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force an extra five minutes but TSU (3-6) outscored the Owls 10-7 in the critical overtime.
