Biggest SWAC upsets over the years

We were a defensive team that year so we didn't beat anyone bad. So two points was all we needed. Shannon's offense didn't kick in until two years later... we did better when the offense was average... LOL

The Jags had a 23 game SWAC winning streak and were considered unbeatable in the conference. The Bulldogs put the hurt on them and a sign read "Welcome to the new SWAC." After Cooper showed the SWAC how to beat them, SU had couple of good years and then everybody finally caught up with them.

Not to take anything away from AAMU because yall played the best yall could play, but that game shouldn't have been close lol. SU overlooked AAMu and didn't start playing until the 4th quarter. Also we weren't use to playing option teams lol.

no.... Southern didn't know how to defend the option and our quarterback ran for over 300 yards on SU that year. Roland Hayes from Houston.

That was not what happened. You guys ran the option and nobody had seen it in the SWAC so we had no clue how to stop it. Key injuries to Mike Hayes and our QB slowed us down in the early 2000s after the 3 Pete (97,98,99). Pete also got transfer happy as well. Then we got back on track in 2003 and 04. Folks didn't catch up to SU and Cooper did not show folks anything because he changed his own offense himself after that season. Don't know why he did that. The same teams in the SWAC kept winning then. Gram and SU were still the dominant teams in the West. With Bama State getting a win against us in the 04 SCG. SU big fall off was 05 and 06 then 08 to 2013.

JSU used to be a beast with it back in the day. Tony Harris was QB. I think he wore number 3. This is when I was a huge JSU football fan as a kid. I think Jeremiah Tillman was the next QB and it was kind of half and half on the option. JSU finally went to the pro-set when Keith"Bones" Taylor arrived from Waycross Ga. SU got his brother Barry Taylor around that same time. He was not as good as Keith.

Yeah I think you are right. I know we went there and got beat in 98. All I know they were running that rock. Against a good SU defense at that.

When JT pulled off that miraculous loss to SU in 1998 with the squib kick I knew we had a very poor coach smh.

I remember my brother SU grad was sitting on Alcorn side right below me. He just turned around and shrugged like "Hey, we'll take it". I still can't believe that coaching decision.

That game was not an upset tho. In the Den the week before, I started a thread that said the winner of that game was going to Bham. I do think we were the better team but we had a OC at the time stuck in his ways. He wanted to pass 1000 times. Even the next year when BAMA State beat us, we passed and passed and passed.. YET, BAMA State had the worst run defense in the conference. No game planning was going on.

I don't know which year pissed me off more 2006 or 2008. That 2008 PV game just made no d--n sense how we lost either.

Cooper did not change the option until much later. We beat Jacksonville State the next year running the option with the transfer qb from Louisville. We still ran a modified version of it when Kelvin Robinson was qb and did not completely change it until much later when Kaiss was hired as oc. But before that year was out, Cooper took over the oc duties from Kaiss just before the MCC and instituted the option back for that game.

Following the 99 year, Southern had a bad two year period.. it was not just the option offense that gave SWAC teams fits... It was also aggressive, hard hitting defensive play, especially rushing the qb, that SWAC teams were not used to dealing with.

Coach Casem didn't hire Coach Richardson. The President at the time(Dr. Delores Spikes) did. Casem want to hire Archie Cooley. He was over ruled.
