On the last episode of Empire it was noted that Lucious' eldest son went to Penn State. They could have easily referenced Howard or Hampton. Then on an episode of Being Mary Jane it noted that the dude Mary Jane is in love with graduated from Duke. The could have easily noted Hampton, FAMU, GSU, Southern, or JSU since he is from ATL.

I'm wondering why Lee Daniels or the creators of Being Mary Jane did not think about this.

Hell on Martin he consistently wore HBCU sweaters and even on Different Strokes that had the Grambling pennant on the wall.

Your Thoughs....
 
For Empire the storyline was that he met his (white) wife while in college at Penn. I guess it would have been a little bit of a stretch for him to have met her at Howard.
 



The oldest son angle works best with him going to a PWI but they could have sent one of the other two sons to Howard.

all the folks that have come in and out on that show....they could've worn something but Lee Daniels is from Philly, went to some small school in Missouri so he hardly knows

It's like on Mary Jane the dad said " And you still wear his college shirt." The camera then panned to Duke. I'm like damn that was right moment for him to have gone to Morehouse...something...LOL

You guys do know this show was created by 2 WHITE guys. So while Lee Daniels is the face of the product-Danny Strong (Buffy season 6) and his buddy still run things. They are not about to let HBCUS get mentioned unless it's something negative.

Yep.

With megashows like Empire, Scandal, etc. EVERY aspect of that show is micromanaged so you know in this day and age they are not going to give HBCUs free pub like that. Taraji could do it on her own being a HU alum but even then I doubt it.
 
Wouldn't have worked on Empire because the character build up on the oldest son is that he is an Ivy League grad who is smart and tends to look down on his family because of his education. Plus they portray him as almost trying to be white which kinda explains the attitude and the wife.
 
not for the main characters but for all the people doing cameos in the show.....like those guys hanging out in the studios or Hakeem's bandwagon friends
 
I think dudes just hanging out in studios or hakeem's friends repping HBCUs might be counter-productive. Eventhough Andre on Empire attended PV for a time, his character works better with the Ivy League/ white wife arc. I don't watch Scandal, but with it being set in DC has Howard ever been referenced? I think that show would be the most likely to incorporate an HBCU into the storylines.
 
It's on ABC...doubt that...FOX would be the channel to do it I think and empire has several blacks writing scripts that are from the area..but wardrobe is a different story
