Tennessee State picked No. 1 in preseason BOXTOROW coaches poll Tigers open season No. 1 for the first time

The Tennessee State Tigers ended last season No. 2.

They begin 2014 No. 1

The Tigers edged last year's defending champion Bethune-Cookman by two points. B-CU edged TSU by two points in last year's final poll. TSU received nine of 20 first place votes, with B-CU receiving seven first-place votes.

"I think it's always great for your team to receive accolades," said TSU head coach Rod Reed. "I vote each week and our players are in tune with this prestigious poll."

This is unfamiliar territory for the Tigers. This is the first time the Tigers have been No. 1 to start the season since BOXTOROW began administering the poll in 2009. The Tigers previous highest rank to start the season was No. 3 in 2013.



The BOXTOROW HBCU FCS coaches' poll is administered by FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW and is voted on by the HBCU Football Championship Subdivision coaches.

I thought they were bare in the cupboards? I know they recently received some transfers, but sometimes it takes some games to get on the same page.

Too bad the Football Jaguars don't have any of those 3 patsys on our schedule this year....(very good poll though I would have had PV higher)

Naw we loaded. Coach Reed and Staff have this team loaded with talent. Best TSU team since 1999 when we finished the regular season undefeated and ranked #1. I think we go 12-0 this year. 11-1 at worst.

Serious question.......NO SMACK!

Do you know why Tennessee State backed out of the contract with us at the last minute? Both UAPB & TN State had the game on their schedule for September 13, but at the last minute earlier this year, TN State backed out & we had to scramble & find a replacement opponent (Concordia).

No Smack. LMAO Nobody from APBU can smack TSU football. In your best season in school history we beat you 40-13. No excuses with that score, our team was and still is that much better then yours.

I don't work for tsu athletics or claim to be connected with any inside scoop. I find out my info from these message boards, tsutigers.com and the Tennessean. I don't know the reason, but nobody can say we was running from u. If we would have played you in St. Louis the game wouldn't have been to different from what we did to Central State.

Wasn't last year one of your best teams ever from a defensive standpoint. I know you have some returning peices but wasn't that a better defense. And Transfers are not always what they seem.

Perhaps you didn't quite understand me when I said "No Smack"........I simply asked you a question. And I didn't suggest that "nobody can say we was running from you". That's something that's obviously perceived from your own mindset. And I believe the game that Tennessee State backed out against us was to be played in Chicago, not St. Louis.

I apologize. I was wrong for that post. I'm so use to every thread on this message board being full of smack, I got caught up.

I never read where there was to be a return game. It doesn't make sense to pull out of Chicago to play in St. Louis. So at best I could guess this was a one game deal. After watching APBU's band and the energy their fans had, i'd like to see a home and home. No classics.
