Anyone else intrigued by the level of talent headed to Valley's Football Program?

Re: Anyone else intrigued by Valley's football hype and Comegy's work thus far?

Is it me, or was the title of this thread changed?

Anyway, JSU folks most likely have their reasons for bashing Comegy, (but from the outside looking in), I feel that Valley made the best hire of the FCS 2014 season. Comegy has proven that he can recruit and win games. A program like Valley can only improve with a head coach with the type of recruiting game like Comegy.

I know Trigger Man talks of them being young, but it's a good thing that the SWAC is not a conference where youth or experience plays a major factor in results on the field. The SWAC is a matter of who shows up to play and a battle of who wants to win the most.

The depth chart of Valley will be much improved under Comegy. You can already see how he is attacking needs. Valley has a nice group of lineman coming in for the 2014 season if they aren't already in summer school.

Tuskegee and Jackson State have both shown us that Gregory Black knows how to get an offensive line to play at a high level. Even though the scores didn't speak much, Black had JSU's offensive line looking solid against FBS teams Mississippi State and Tulane.

Gregory Black is a great O-Line coach. He's going to have Valley's line in shape for the season. For some reason, it took Comegy about 4 years to bring Black to JSU - don't ask me why. We wasted a lot of time with the other guy.

As for Comegy and Valley - he was a good hire for them. If Harold Jackson falls on his face(not likely), he'll look like a great hire. But it was past time for him to move on at JSU. And for those who wonder why there's so much attention from JSU on these Valley threads, it's because this situation is pretty much unprecedented. We aren't used to seeing a former JSU coach at another school - much less an instate rival. Last time that happened was when TnSt stole the great John Merritt in the 60s. Plus we've spent the better part of 8 years evaluating Comegy. We know him better than any school. So yes we're interested in what Comegy's doing at Valley. But don't mistake that for fear. We let him go for a reason.

Re: Anyone else intrigued by Valley's football hype and Comegy's work thus far?

It wasn't dumb, it just went over your head. He spoke about the team losing concentration before the game is over.

No it was a very dumb statement. Players losing concentration has absolutely nothing to do with the fans celebrating "prematurely".

Sure it can from a mental standpoint. A team can get so caught up in making a good play and seeing the crowd's reaction that they lose focus of the game still going on.

Man. I was in that Superdome last season watching JSU's offensive line handling Tulane's best defensive line NOLA has seen from them since 1998. Tulane's starting defensive line, (that included 2 experienced SEC transfers and 1 C-USA all-american), were getting embarrassed up front for most of the game and allowed JSU to lead the entire game in yards. 2 of those guys are currently on NFL rosters. As some of you already know, I made my SWAC Championship prediction after watching that game. JSU's line looked too strong for the SWAC to me.

In the Mississippi State game, JSU's offensive held their own allowing their offense to come close to 300 yards vs that Bulldog SEC line. If JSU receivers and linebackers would have been so terrified, that score would have looked a hell of a lot better. Watching that game, I found myself screaming at JSU's WR in entire first half for dropping so many beautiful thrown balls.

Anyway, Black is going to have a fun time working with all of those lineman Comegy has coming to Valley.

Off Topic:
(I was told by a credible source that Valley has another DT on the way from Illinois. This same source told me that Valley was going to get that JUCO QB they got and that 2 star recruit Tusun Young was going to decommit from UAB to play for Comegy before anyone posted it.)

JSU Fans have always celebrated too soon and the players have always fed off the fans in the stands celebrating before the game is over. If you go back and evaluate the key games JSU have lost including the last two championships JSU lost you will see the lost of concentration of the players.

Because of Comegy. He can't keep his players focused and disciplined.

Re: Anyone else intrigued by Valley's football hype and Comegy's work thus far?

That was on the player. Even one there was shocked when he spiked the ball like that. Still funny though lol

No discipline. That's on the coach. It happened every year with some player doing something stupid on the field and not being punished for it. And then Swac&Meac says that Valley will be more disciplined under Comegy. LOL!!!!! Yeah, right.

Re: Anyone else intrigued by Valley's football hype and Comegy's work thus far?

Ok, this is just a question that I'm going to throw out and not everyone answer at one time. Ya'll keep pointing fingers at Comegy, but never seem to hold players responsible for their own actions. Did Comegy make the kid step out of bounds versus SU, did Comegy allow UAPB's receiver to get behind the defense? A football mind wants to know. I'm just not understanding the logic ya'll using in absolving these players from their bone head actions. Coaches coach, players play, and fans cheer.

Re: Anyone else intrigued by Valley's football hype and Comegy's work thus far?

DGTM, you have a point with the catch in the SU game but the DB should have never been put in that position in the UAPB game. It goes deeper than that stuff though. Comegy reminds me of Jim Harbaugh in a sense. He is a winner, he gets his teams motivated to play but his teams are always mistake prone and seem to lack discipline.

When your team consistently gets dumb penalties, consistently lacks organization, it is directly on the coach to straighten that stuff out. You watched Valley play under both Morgan and Totten, I am sure you noticed a difference between the two. Totten had more talented teams in my opinion but they were super mistake prone.

There is a reason Broadway kicked our azz year after year, even though we arguably had better talent.

Ok, here's your answer (if you can stomach it and accept it). No to both. Mistakes happen in ALL sports, but when they become a recurring theme, them the blame shifts from not only to the players but to the coaches. We had been plagued with "bone headed" actions since 2006. A lot of us saw this, but said that they will be corrected once the kinks are worked out, once the offense gells, once the defense gets on the same page, etc..... But they either never did or they happened very late in the season. Once the new season starts, they happened again (sometimes even with the same players). Instead of the coaches correcting the players, they just sat them at the end of the bench and let them rot there.

Coach (use that word very loosely) Hayes never taught our guys anything. For the WR for Pine Bluff getting behind our DB. Well, why did it happen in the 2013 SCG? Different players. Hayes do not know anything about defensives on this level. His knowledge only extends to D2 heights and that is put everybody in the box and blitz you and hope that somebody gets to the QB. People like Marcus Benard, LeBeau, came with their techniques. They were taught how to rush the QB before they made it to us at another college. People like Sam Washington learned on his own to develop. People like Brooks didn't know crap. Finally after a season and a half, Hayes put the guy on the line and say run till you reach the QB. Our DBs never were taught anything about cover schemes or packages. They were just put on an island and were told that this is your man, cover him. Some had the natural ability to stay with his man, some didn't.

If you are truly a football mind, it will not take you long to see these things that are not being taught by these guys. And understand that these things are being taught in pee wee leagues and up, but your coaches are from a different era. The Billy Joe era. Once again, if you're a football mind like you say you are, you 'll soon understand what that means. Comegy is a good recruiter, but he can't teach players to improve. Your players will NOT develop and the same mental mistakes they make when they get there, they will be making them when they leave. Comegy doesn't know how to hire decent coordinators that can teach and develop. Our players are being taught by younger coordinators now and there is a "World" of a difference.

Where was all of this talk when JSU was 8-0 in the SWAC and it was a "recurring theme" of how dominant JSU was in the SWAC and needed to leave?

JSUnese.

Like DGTM, myself and some posters from other schools have said. We don't want or didn't ask for your "advice", "insight" or your so-called "expert opinions" on a coach that we've all seen for 8 years in the SWAC.

Same ol ****.

Dude, take you ass to a barbecue if you don't want to have a legitimate discussion. These things we (Jackson State fans) have been discussing since 2006. I know you wasn't around here then, but this board was here.

Instead of being angry, you should be happy Valley is even a topic of conversation. Y'all haven't been relevant in 30 years. Sit back and enjoy the short-lived attention.

Dude, 8-0 was fine, but the games Comegy won were against inferior teams. He struggled to win against a sorry su team. Barlow basically gave the game away by not running Crowell whom we couldn't stop. Barlow stopped him.
Grambling was a give away game. PB wasn't good. AAMU wasn't good. Valley wasn't good. PV's defense was too sorry for them. Lost to Alcorn.
Last year, the SWAC was the weakest it's ever been. Comegy still couldn't finish the deal.
Going 8-0 and not winning the SCG would be great for Valley but not for JSU. There's the difference.

Here's the true unbiased answer to your question. BB and JayRob have always hated Comegy... to the contrary Ive always been a fan of Comegy until 2013. It was so frustrating watching a Comegy coached team struggle with EVERY team we played last year. Now maybe we werent that good, but one thing is for sure we were much better the teams we struggled with all year. This year was the absolute worst coaching job since he came to Jackson. If he had just handed the ball off 50 times, we would have been undefeated in the SWAC, but he insisted on running a 5 wide set with a running QB.

You will find out that he NEVER pays attention to detail. Ive seen coaches beat Comegy using the wind. Get use to seeing your DBs unnecessarily on an island on 3rd and 20. Maybe your offense will be average/practical with Gregory calling the plays, but you will never beat anybody with equal talent with Comegy.

That kid stepped out of bounds, but the game shouldnt have been close. Seems to me that he wouldve watched the 2nd half of the first game and continued that abuse in the SCG....again, he paid NO attention to simple details.

You will get better players. I have no idea how he find so many good players from Wisconsin and NewJersey, but they better be skilled before they get to Valley. Lets see what happens.

This is the SWAC. Even the best teams in the past 30 years have struggled with some of the worst teams in the conference.

Wow, look who's back! Seriously though, probably one of your better and most logical, non-trolling posts.

Comegy lost to PB on a 95 yard bomb. You would think the last thing he would do is lose LIKE THAT again. The very next home game, JSU has BamaState backed up inside the 5 at the end of the game. Instead of backing up and making BamaState drive the field (which they hadnt done since the first drive) he went into his famous man to man defense again. If QuaCox had cut his fingernails before the game and had not barely tipped away a bomb from the back of the endzone, JSU may have lost to BamaState like we lost to PB in the SCG. If Cox doesnt tip that pass away and BamaState wins the game like that, I think Comegy wouldve been fired the next day. He doesnt LEARN.

But, See you all for homecoming...dont be like our last HC sissys...but the again, Comegy aint no punk
