It must be an exciting time in Itta Bena. I am very intrigued by their list of signees and how many HBCU fans I know who are talking about Comegy's efforts.
Why?
1. Valley has been down in the dumps of the struggling SWAC conference and HBCU football overall rankings. Valley's current list of signees is full of high school standouts. 11 of 18 signees were either nationally ranked by rivals/247 or received some type of All-Star honors. (Very impressive for Valley).
2. There are players on the team that lost to Concordia for crying out loud. These guys have to be tired of losing!
3. They have a coach who was shown the door at Jackson State after building a SWAC East contender machine, but not winning enough championships.
4. Last years defense gave up too many big plays, but showed some very good speedy players who return for the 2014 season. Valley currently has two 2 star DB's on their recruiting list who both had several FBS offers who will join a secondary led by FCS All-American DB Avery Boykin.
5. Valley lacks depth on the line, but has 8 lineman enrolling this summer to increase the number significantly. I expect the 2 star lineman from Florida and the 300 pound JUCO star to both start this season.
6. The offense struggled to move the ball when it counted, but brings in two 6'4 and 6'6 true freshman WR's who both saw some good days in high school on the football field as well as the basketball court. This can be a big time factor for whoever wins the QB job because tall WR's in the SWAC with the ability to get pretty high in the air usually rack up a few more points on the scoreboard. Just ask SU and PVAMU fans what a WR/basketball hopper do for your passing game.
7. Valley's special teams unit is about to see just how much a good kicker can help you win a few close games. Field goal problems will be a thing of the past once that kid from Florida starts in week 1.
I am not a fan for throwing freshman out to the college football jungle, but Valley does have plenty of "former high school standouts' in their 2014 class that will have to grow up early. I do feel that Valley has some ways to go before anyone should fear them being a SWAC East Contender, but you have to give Comegy credit for bringing Valley to a level of recruiting that they have never been before. 10K reviews on their 2014 signee thread compared to only 5 replies on their 2013 thread shows that my points are indeed valid. There is no way anyone expected Valley two increase their signee list from a quality 4 to 18 in Comegy's first season at Mississippi Valley. Call me a clown because Comegy already has a reputation of being a hard recruiter, but there is no way anyone expected to see this type of class at Valley this soon in his quest to turn the program around.
I know it's a lot of fans see the JSU-MVSU-Comegy hype adding to everyone's post and views, but the fact remains that these guys are already on a level that many Valley alums/fans aren't use to being on when it comes to highly recruited players. Now, I wonder how this hype will effect the program. Will we see the same old "play tough on first and second down, play weak on third and fourth down" Valley of the past? Or could we see the same type of hard nose football teams that Comegy built at Central State, Tuskegee and Jackson State? If I had to make a decision today, I would say that Valley is going to be a factor in the SWAC starting in 2015. I could be wrong, but I just can't see Valley not being the type of program that wins more than 6 games every year under Comegy based on what he has done in the past.
One different approach that two other members of this board have already pointed out is that Comegy has only given out scholarship offers to players who come from winning high schools in this class. His track record shows that he gives offers to anyone who can play. I guess he is really wants to change the losing culture at Valley by only bringing in winners. I hope that doesn't backfire on him, but then again, Valley has a legitimate recruiting class to showcase this year. Those who really follow college football recruiting and state/nationwide high school player rankings already know this. I must say, if Comegy can turn things around,(and I think he will), the SWAC East could really be something special. Alcorn, JSU and Valley can really be a force to the NCAA-FCS just as Mississippi JUCO's are a force to the NJCAA.
As far as 2014 goes, I do expect to see a much more disciplined team that I have seen from Valley since 2006.
