HBCU Accmulative Ticket Sales from 2005 to 2013

PV A&M needed 6 million dollars of school funds to balance their budget in 2013. I see some of you all aren't paying attention to those numbers. 60% of your budget was subsidized. In contrast only 20% of S.U.'s was....

Exactly. SU athletics is very healthy.

You don't have a baseball team for starters. That sport has incredible travel costs over the course of a season.
Also, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Jackson State, Mississippi Valley, Alabama State and Alabama A&M are within 414 miles of your campus and in neighboring states... so in essence half of the conference is in that precious drive time window that the majority of the OVC schools are in...

The OVC is STILL a one-bid basketball league, and you guys -- like everyone else -- are hitting the road in the non-conference taking guarantee games before the conference schedule to balance the books.

Oh and in football, you don't play Jackson State in Jackson. So right there, one of your biggest paydays has some savings because of reduced travel.

Since you're insulting my "liberal arts" education, riddle me this you big time Fortune 500 CEO you ...

Football drives college athletics. Why are you in a conference where all the member schools are closer in distance, but they don't show up to your stadium for your games in one of America's largest cities? What turns those other OVC schools' fans off about playing TnSU in Nashville? What turns your fans off about seeing the other OVC schools play TnSU? Why are you bragging on geographic proximity to other institutions when statistically speaking your geographic proximity to other OVC members has not translated into increased ticket revenue from 2008-13?

What's the use of harping on "reduced travel expenses" in college athletics when football pays the bills and four other SWAC institutions have made more than you?

I'll be waiting over here while you supply some statistical evidence that proves your point. At least come with some proof. Until then ...

We don't believe you ... you need more people

Oh BTW, Texas A&M could've stayed in the Big 12 and bragged about geographic proximity ... but they saw that SEC money and went for the money. You see where I'm getting at, right?
You do realize this round of conference realignment doesn't a damned thing to do with geography ... it has everything to do with maximizing revenue streams? Another question, big-time Fortune 500 CEO ... what does TnSU plan to do to maximize revenue? Obviously that ticket revenue with that good geographic proximity to other OVC members is doing wonders for the athletic department's coffers.

Must you be so cruel? :emlaugh: (In 2013, 61% of their budget was subsidized by the school)

Notice Southern and JSU are less depended on School Funds then the other schools in the SWAC and they are the top two schools in attendance every year. The Bama schools and the Texas schools depends heavy on School Funds from their State. Grambling learned fast when ole Piyush dropped the ax on all State schools.

ACCUMULATIVE SCHOOL FUNDS FROM 2005 TO 2013
Alabama State - $61,572,772.00
Alabama A&M - $40,729,915.00
Texas Southern - $36,352,886.00
Prairie View - $27,746,216.00
Grambling - $27,462,678.00
Arkansas Pine Bluff - $25,405,839.00
Alcorn - $21,107,244.00
Mississippi Valley - $13,468,203.00
Jackson State - $10,925,502.00
Southern - $10,703,883.00

Good Post Jag89..........And this is the reason why some Presidents and College Administrators see athletic programs as a liability (though like some stated it's not that clear cut i.e. enrollment numbers that aren't factored in)

Besides LaFleur, SU had some AD's that saw the handwriting on the wall on what those other folks were planning on doing to State school funds, but LaFleur was from LSU and he thought those other folks were trying to help out. Although we are now paying for LaFleur's incompetence concerning APR, IMO SU's Athletic Department is in better financial shape then most, if not all HBCU's Athletic Department and I still think there's room for improvement.

School Funds doesn't include Student Fee. That's another category in the report.

So, Grambling is second huh? Some people must be letting a lot of people in for free.

Said the cat from the titty milking school in Ruston! :shame:

If yall hadn't been so short sited and ignorant, that #2 spot would have likely been ours. Oh well! :shame:

If those numbers are correct, we know it's not from home ticket sales. It must be from when they get paid to take a beating and from Classics. JSU does not really do classics and we don't accept as many 1-A games.

If Alcorn has a good season they will be there talk smack for the Soul Bowl. Thing is social media might revive this classic and bring it back over 50k. Alcorn and JSU had IG, Facebook & twitter LOL@ meme's(picture captions)

I am not referring to student fees. I am referring to increased enrollment due to having a winning program that is not factored into that report. (marketing tool)

Thanks BlueDog for starting this thread. Maybe we can now start looking at what's best for HBCU's athletics and how to maximize our revenue. I see BlueDog started this thread on the MEAC Page and SUjagTILLiDIE continued the conversation over here.

In that case, you are talking about student sheer support and recruitment instead of students direct financial obligation to their school's Athletic Department.

It was a very painful lesson, which why we are enhancing our home schedule with quality FCS teams for a reason!

Thanks Bluedog for starting this thread. Maybe we can now start looking at what's best for HBCU's athletics and how to maximize our revenue.

#1: Mandate a required date for (ALL) schools to finish their season; as well as mandate how many lower level opponents each team plays. Uniformity if you will.
#2: Revive the Heritage Bowl and get is fully sponsored.
#3: Implement a true BCF college playoff system to crown a BCF champion. (If #2 doesn't work or does not get the public backing).
#4: Put together a plan/strategy to start a 1-A conference.
#5: Get superstars/celebrities to help in marketing an event to help with brand recognition to create a cult following. This could possibly work for the HB or some other type of game/event.
#6: Find new streams of revenue by negotiating contracts, marketing partnerships, donations, investments, etc.
#7: Create a checks & balance system to watch all money coming up and all money coming out! (we are our own worst enemy!)

I see there are a lot of uninformed posters on this board who have no clue about the business of college athletics or basic business for that matter. It’s also sad you guys take great pride in being the FCS attendance leaders, but feel no way about being last in football and basketball. In the last 10 games JSU is 2-8 vs. TnSU and a Casey Therriault away from being 0-10. Yet seems as long as JSU has more fans then us they are cool with losing every year on the field. This year will be no different. You guys will beat us in attendance but get your ass kicked on the field.

LOOK WE ARE NOT THE SEC OR BIG TEN. Footballs barely pays its own bills, yet alone carry the entire athletic budget. In the SEC and Big Ten. Yes. MEAC, SWAC, OVC, or any other FCS school. Hell no.

How can a SWAC or HBCU fan read this thread and not be embarrassed by what some posters are saying. We have Bama A&M posters saying how TnSU needs the swac but their ticket sales were nearly half of ours. Instead of worrying about TnSU he needs to look in the mirror and see WTF is going wrong at AAMU.
U are already in the SWAC and still don't have any fans.

We are talking about a 9 year period were TnSU averaged $785,209 in ticket sales. Not even a million. We don’t have a bigger fan base then JSU who averaged $1,124,471 so at best I see an increase of maybe 150K in ticket sales if TnSU were to join the SWAC. I personally don’t want our student athletes (volleyball, softball, track, basketball, golf, and tennis) having to take bus ride to Louisiana and Texas for increased football revenue by 150K.

Please, Please, Please, Please stop comparing HBCU’s to the SEC. Someone mentioned TAMU leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. That was a great move for them. It allowed them to get from under UT’s shadow, and from the TV deal alone they are set to make tons of cash. Ohio State will make what FAMU made (#1 in HBCU football revenue) over that 9 year period in one season from student tickets.

On the real you crab in the barrel ****** need to wake up. Please wake up.

Dr. Glover already squashed the thought of going to the SWAC last year...TNSU is ran pretty well athletic dept wise Mrs.Phillips is doing a good job but you guys some of the worst fans with a pretty good program I have seen.

No, but it can minimize the dependencey on subsidy dollars. You can take some of the burden off the general fund with higher football ticket sales.

Thanks Bluedog for starting this thread. Maybe we can now start looking at what's best for HBCU's athletics and how to maximize our revenue.

The first step would be to end all classics except the MCC, BC, SFC LDC and maybe SHC. We really need to give back to our schools and more home games to promote businesses in the surrounding areas. This would be all money in from an HBCU perspective, it helps all parties involved. Revamp our old ways over promoting games meaning less Classics, no 3rd party people at all. Make the AD's earn their keep. No need to promote the old way anymore when you can see live footage of schools and what they're about over the web? IMO classic's are a thing of the past except the traditional ones. The seed was planted in the 80's and hatched in the 90s, it withered away in the 00's. We should be reaping the benefits by bringing more excitement around campus and promoting it online. I'm glad UAPB and GSU do home and home now, all money in mentality. When PV builds its stadium they should play every game they can their even TXSO lol. Bama State need to play schools like Troy and JVSU. Their rivalry with Jackson State is growing, especially since both schools have been battling and having classic games. Cities like Huntsville, Jackson, Montgomery, Little Rock and Baton Rouge are the hidden jewels of the south. Its past time we start promoting it. A lot of those kids from up north are coming back south anyways. These cities are the key, with Houston being the money maker in the end.

yall hiring those coaches and using projected revenue in forms of game guarantees...that's not creating a new position

.I'm talking about administrative positions and paying them plus coaches to the point where they will not hold you hostage for renegotiations

How many times Cador got raises based off what he heard other SWAC coaches received?

That's the bottom line. When Gramblings start implementing their student fees, the liability to their school will be reduced more. Band fan is worried about Bayou Classic money going into the general fund and PV is using 3 times more money out of their general funds than S.U. (bet he doesn't post that again). :emlaugh:
