Jackson State bus carrying baseball team up in flames

glad no one was hurt...

our HBCU's need to take care of these school buses and keep maintenance up

Although anything is possible, some have already assumed its poor maintenance.

It's about time to upgrade those buses.

WOW! I am sure the insurance will get us a brand new bus!

Man, that bus is probable worth about $40-50,000. A new one will cost about $500,000.

Jackson State says Ole Miss and Mississippi State are helping replace some of the gear lost in yesterday's bus fire.

I said the same thing. Although two of the buses were with charter bus services, this is the third time a bus carrying athletes from a HBCU goes up in flames in less than two years. I hope the preventive maintenance schedule is not being overlooked on vehicles transporting our athletes. These vehicles travel too many miles not to be checked on a routine basis.

Happens at about the same frequency across the board. It isn't an "HBCU issue". There may be an issue with the regulations on bus inspections.

Maybe some of their timely hitting will rub off too. The SWAC is in trouble now. Our bus caught on fire, so will our bats come tournament time.

Well glad everyone was ok-albeit shaken but ok! I was driving in the Midfield/Hueytown area near the Allison-Bonnett memorial drive yesterday and saw the billowing smoke and thought a railroad car had caught on fire somewhere. Since the bus is State property I'm sure there will be an internal as well State investigation which is all good and well. I'm assuming that maintaince and service contracts for these buses are required with some service company.

Jackson State has it's own maintenance facility. Also, the buses are taken to Dallas every year for a week for a full maintenance check top to bottom.

Probably need to review the maintenance records from that facility in Dallas, at minimum.

Having worked at Greyhound Corporate IT, I supported the BOSS platform, which housed fleet maint records. My guess based on the pics on the Birmingham news site, is, the fire may have started from an overheated tire. Either not properly inflated or maybe having picked up a nail in travel. Unless the bus is equipped with TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system) the driver may not have known he was driving with a flat. That bus was a MCI DL102, which didn't have standard TPMS. The later DL102s and D4500s and G4500s have it standard. Now, if the bus is properly maintained and aligned regularly, the driver should be able to detect if the bus is pulling to the right or the left, which would prompt him to stop and check (and feel) his tires. But... If the tire was running flat (or deflated) it heats up. And it'll eventually get to a point where it ignites. And once that happens, there's virtually no way to put a tire fire out. And it burns so hot so fast that it consumes everything around it. Based on the pics after the fire was out, all six rear tires were burned off the rims. That kinda heat will easily consume a coach.

There'll be an investigation but that's what my guess is... A tire fire.

~~taking my Greyhound hat off, putting it back on the shelf~~

Next time, JSU should purchase a Prevost not a MCI, MCI's are no good!
