Mayweather vs. Maidana fight almost canceled

I got a bad feeling about this fight. I wouldn't be shocked if Money lost this one.

Mayweather, Ellerbe complain about Maidana's gloves, threaten to cancel fight

LAS VEGAS – A bizarre controversy erupted late Friday afternoon following the weigh-in for the Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana fight at the MGM Grand Garden that a Mayweather team executive said put the fight in jeopardy.

Maidana wanted to wear a custom-made powder blue pair of Everlast MX boxing gloves. Mayweather and Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, objected to the padding in the custom gloves. Francisco Aguilar, chairman of the Nevada Athletic Commission, examined those gloves and ruled they were unfit for competition because of the distribution of padding.

However, Aguilar ruled a stock red pair of Everlast MX gloves were acceptable and he approved them for use. Mayweather complained about the padding in those, but Aguilar stood firm and said those were legal.

He then ordered the sides to settle the dispute among themselves, since the commission had approved the Everlast MX gloves. Ellerbe left a meeting among the camps and said, "No fight."

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer said he expected the matter to be resolved and did not expect it to impact the fight.

FTR, I really hate when boxers resort to grabbing and holding. I just feel like that is a cowards way out.

The remedy to that is not to let them grab you. As for the fight, man that was a goodun!!! Money ain't been tested like that since Jose Luis Castillo back when he was first time champ. Looking forwrd to a rematch. But then Pac might jump in and challenge Maidana. Maidana has a touch chin, lots of stamina and a mean streak. I don't see too many guys beating him.

I hate when Mayweather changes his "stick and move" style to prove he can stand there and rumble for a few rounds. One of these days, he is going to lose a decision that he really should have won in a close fight. He needs to keep popping his opponents and moving around the ring in every fight.

I suspect if they fight again, Money will put on a 12 round boxing clinic instead of a brawl.

If Mayweather is smart, which he is, I won't fight this dude again. He gave him his one shot and now move on to the next one.

I don't think Money had a choice in the brawling. Maidana was coming. Never got tired, so he kept coming. Like Rocky on Apollo Creed or Frazier on Ali. Adapt or get destroyed. Floyd adapted.

Now that right there is the truth. I hope Money don't fight that cat again. Let Pacquiao fight that mofo next.

There is no doubt about it. Floyd does this "give the fans what they want" sh_t and decided to move around the ring less than usual. Mayweather needs to understand that there are still a few people out here who understand the sweet science of the sport and know that boxing is all about landing clean punches. " Hit and not get hit" is the art of boxing. Do I like a good scrap/rumble? Yes, but I hate when fighters who don't specialize in that type or style tries it to prove a point. Mayweather almost got robbed in the De La Hoya and Cotto fights doing that same crap. In both of those fights, I had him winning by far on my scorecard, but there are judges and fans out there who will give a fighter a round because he threw 50 fierce punches and landed 12 over a guy who throws 20 punches and lands 14.

Floyd needs to stop this mess and get back to using the tools that made him untouchable in the ring. If they fight again, I Floyd might pop shot this kid to an easy UD.

Floyd had a choice, Floyd was just trying to please everyone who says he runs too much in the ring.

I sure hope Pacman man's up and accepts Mayweather's terms to a fight. Pacman needs Mayweather more than Mayweather needs him. I like Pacman because he is a Warrior, but Mayweather is going to puy a serious beating on him.

It's easy to accept Money's explanation, but a dude bent on coming forward, with great stamina, and an iron jaw is gonna come forward. Counterpunches deter fighters that can't take them. Tired fighters get less active and slow down. But when the punches don't bother you and you ain't tired, you just keep coming. Floyd gonna have to fight with this dude if there's a rematch. I can't see him keeping him at the end of shots, unless Money gets on his toes, which he doesn't do.

I believe another fight will happen. Too many Money haters lusting to see him get beat and this is the closest thing in their sick minds to quinch their thirst. I would prefer to see a fight with the Pac Man first though......

I guarantee you that Mayweather will pop shot this dude to an easy decision if they fight again. Mayweather had a choice in that fight. Maidana has heart and is tough, but he doesn't have the skills to beat Mayweather. It will be an easy UD.

The replay of this fight happens on Showtime Saturday night. I certainly will be watching closely.

Mayweather Earnings for last fight on 5/3/2014

Purse 32 million
PPV Sales 38 million (estimated)
Total $70 million

That fight reminded me of the first Sugar Ray Lenard/Roberto Duran fight! I had a bad feeling all week about that fight after seeing Maidana in his previous fight! That over hand punch that he uses was a big concern!

After watching the replay, I felt like Floyd gave away too many early rounds. I think in a rematch, Floyd would win by a larger margin. That fight was extremely close though. Even though it was a unanimous decision, in the funny crooked game of boxing, you just can't leave these type of fights in the judges' hands. Floyd was fortunate that the fight was in Las Vegas, otherwise that fight could have been taken away from him (justly or unjustly). Floyd stayed on the ropes too much trying to give the fans a brawl to appease them. The clearer and crisper power punches as well as bodywork was made by Money. I would say Floyd by a very close two rounds. It certainly was not the multiple pot shots, lead right hand performance that we are accustom to seeing though. He did not have the surgeon type of artful boxing night that is his trademark.

Same thing I thought mostly. If Floyd had lost the decision, I couldn't have been mad.

You are right about him being lucky although I had him winning by a large margin. Maidana missed way too many punches but got the crowd excited by throwing all of those shots.

I am a HUGE Money fan but not bias. Maidana missed a bunch of punches but connected a lot too (too much for my comfort) and threw more than Floyd though Money connect percentages were higher. We'll have to agree to disagree on the margin. IMHO, that fight was close enough for Money to get robbed. I felt those unofficial cards that Showtime had (1 and 2 round margins) were about right. The crowd certainly didn't impact my persperctive because I was pulling for Money (but frustrated at times). I couldn't stand Money staying on the ropes for so long. Take it for what it's worth but, if that fight would have been in a place like San Antonio, Money would have been in trouble with the judges. You have to really know boxing to know what I'm talking about (not saying that you don't).
