Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says whoever taped Donald Sterling’s comments should be ‘sent to prison’

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar fully supports Adam Silver’s lifetime ban of Clippers owner Donald Sterling for making racist comments to his girlfriend, but he says he also wants whoever is responsible for taping the comments “sent to prison.â€

Writing in a strongly worded editorial piece for Time magazine, Abdul-Jabbar spoke out against the methods used to obtain evidence.

“Shouldn’t we be equally angered by the fact that his private, intimate conversation was taped and then leaked to the media?†Abdul-Jabbar wrote in Time. “Didn’t we just call to task the NSA for intruding into American citizen’s privacy in such an un-American way?â€

As the Daily News’ legal analyst, New York lawyer Tom Harvey, has pointed out this week, the recording released by TMZ last weekend in which Sterling answers questions by his girlfriend in blatantly racist terms, was probably illegally recorded, especially if the tape was made in California, a state in which both parties must know they are being recorded.

It is illegal to record a person without consent, according to Cali law.

I agree. Even though what Sterling said was despicable and I have ZERO sympathy for him, the law is the law. It's a scary thought that a conversation said in the privacy of your own home can cost you the way it's costing him. Hell, just think of half the shit people say on TSPN, LOL!! Can that also be used to bring someone down like that?

About a "Girl" Who Refused to Just Shut up and Take Orders
Much has been made of the remarks, caught on an audio recording, that, it has now been confirmed, were made by Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling. They were racist comments and included demands on a woman the website TMZ identified as Sterling's then-girlfriend V. Stiviano, a 31-year-old woman of black and Latin heritage he's reportedly known since 2010.

She was not, he said, to bring black people to Clippers games, nor to "broadcast" the fact that she's socializing with black men -- specifically citing Magic Johnson, an apparent friend of Sterling. "You can sleep with [black people]," though, he reassured Stiviano. "The little I ask you is not to promote it on [social media]... and not to bring them to my games."

For the comments, Sterling has been banned for life from the NBA and fined $2.5 million. The NBA also announced it would start a process to force Sterling to sell the team, which he has owned since the 1980s. But just as notable as the racist beliefs expressed -- and yet what has not been raised in all of this -- was Sterling's blatant sexism, both in attempting to bully his woman friend into indulging his racism and in assuming that he could do so with impunity.

Don't recall for sure which reporter on CNN said it but dude has his phone conversations recorded because of his age...he forget things.

Re: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says whoever taped Sterling’s comments should be ‘sent to pri

Is there a reasonable expectation of privacy when using a cell phone? That question will have to be answered. Conversations broadcast over the air is like sending email or text messages. Like sending erotic or lewd pictures via cell phone

It wasn't over a phone call

Legal or illegal, I'm just glad it came out. If he is too stupid to realize that what he says in public or private can be scrutinized, he needs to lose every dime he has. Now this fool is saying he should have paid his "Ho" off. He has never once said he is remorseful for what he had said. I hope the NBA makes him the poorest man on earth. Donald Sterling has a mafia mentality. They need to investigate him for other crimes. I'm sure he is going to try to blackmail other owners in the NBA.

Very interesting!

Re: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says whoever taped Sterling’s comments should be ‘sent to pri

I have a strong problem with being recorded in your home by someone you trust. Yet, my father told me something years ago...."When you get an amount of money that your significant other has not worked for or seen, then leave her...she will get revenge one or another."

Re: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says whoever taped Sterling’s comments should be ‘sent to pri

The reason why California have such privacy law is to protect their high profile residents from scrutiny, such as movie stars and very wealthy individuals, which is why scumbags like Donald Sterling think they can express their true feelings in private. It makes me mad as hell to even think about how many poor Black people Sterling step on in order for him to become a billionaire.

You mean your "Ho" or "side piece" instead of your significant other. Donald Sterling's bat crap crazy wife is standing by his side. His wife is definitely not a Black woman, because it would have been a totally different story if she was Black. If she was Black, she would have found a way to destroy his and her billions by now.

Thank you!!! There are some on here that the only difference between them and Sterling is a few million dollars. Well, maybe a few hundred million.

I have a question, how can you can take someone down that is already close to being down. If person is not at least a millionaire, it would be a waste of time and money trying to take them down. Just like the smalltime crack heads that are in jail, they would be another burden on the system. At least Donald Sterling has billionaire that the system can go after, which is why fools like him should be extra cautious when speaking to anyone in public or private. Unless you know something I don't know, but I don't think there is too many millionaires posting on TSPN.

Some times folks need to shut the f@ck up.

If I am learning correctly, this was definitely one of those times. If I could take back some of the things i've written/said, I would.

Re: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says whoever taped Sterling’s comments should be ‘sent to pri

OK...Donald Sterling under the law could be considered a "public figure" because of his prominence in the community as owner of the Clippers along with his federal lawsuits..

That being said, if Sterling is considered a public figure (like the president, athletes, politicians and celebrities) then the expectation of privacy argument is lessened to a certain extent.

Apparently he told her to tape him, because he is old and forget things. She was not taping him illegally. The shat back fired on him though.

Re: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar says whoever taped Sterling’s comments should be ‘sent to pri

Sterling said his only regret is those tapes were released. He is not regretting what he said. Like I said before, I respect that about him.

Look what happen to Louisiana's Christian Republican Vance McAllister. I'm sure he didn't expect someone to be recording him in his own office kissing his best friend's wife/staffer.

Founder it's a lot of people bringing this obvious point up as if the NBA or anybody connected said they issued the ban and fine to bankrupt him.
