It's that time. Many of our conference teams should make improvements with our OOC record. I think the conference is moving in a positive way.

Here's our 1st week(end):

Without Javan Mitchell, Southern tips off at Marquette

The Southern men’s basketball team couldn’t face a much more challenging way to begin its season.

The Jaguars open Friday night at Marquette, which went to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament last season, is ranked No. 17 in the country and has the nation’s second-longest homecourt winning streak at 25 games.

On top of that, Southern won’t have the services of center Javan Mitchell, who is awaiting medical clearance after being diagnosed with an enlarged heart.

“He hasn’t officially been released yet, so I don’t anticipate having him on this trip,†said coach Roman Banks, whose team plays at Middle Tennessee on Sunday before returning home.

The MVSU/OSU game will be on 692 & 1692 on U-Verse, Fox College Sports Pacific and Direct TV 677.

According to the Morehouse College Web page, the Atlanta Tip Off Basketball Tournament will be played at Forbes Area at Morehouse on November 8-11, 2013. Three schools have opted out. Those participating are Morehouse, J.C. Smith. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Tuskegee, and Virginia Union. In the future, it will rotate among the participating schools. Unless it appears in the local media, who will know about it? I believe that is why attendance at the SIAC basketball tournament declined. It did well when it first moved to Atlanta.
 
The tournament was postponed because a sponsor pulled out at the last minute, which caused those teams to pull out. That's why the tournament was postponed until next year. It was in the Atlanta Constitution Journal last week. Some of the teams were able to pick up last minute home games, as we did.
 
The Alcorn State Lady Braves Basketball team opens the 2013-2014 season at Central Arkansas . You can hear the game on wprl.org. Following the womens game you can hear the mens season opener at Creighton.
