Giving back to HBCUs: Will it ever get better?

I work with European American adults from PWIs and I can tell you many of them DO NOT give back. One of the biggest difference is that they have a lot more alumni to draw on and alumni with more money. European Americans have more wealth than African Americans. Some HBCU grads want perfection, anything short of that is their EXCUSE not to give. Many of us do give back. As more of our institutions move more people into the professional class, more money will return (my guess is the PVAMU has the largest or near the largest endowment in the SWAC - someone can post that information if they have it). As our grads do better some will give move via donations and make the university part of their last will and testament. ASU and AAMU expanded their endowments post a court ruling where the state matched funds. I cant speak about AAMU prior to the court ruling, but ours was pitiful before the court ruling. Its better now and needs to continue to grow.

Endowments take time and effort.

Some whites that move to the top of corporate America have funneled money from corporate America into their schools.

Outside of attending football games, ASU hasn't received one red cent from me. I remember constantly running into money issues as an undergrad. I told the financial aid lady that I would not donate any money to the school and I have kept that promise for over a decade. Don't get me wrong, I have a great experience with the students and teachers. But I been watching in disgust the buffoonery of the administration over the years and I just couldn't bring myself to give. I'll start giving once I see an administration I like. The firing of the last President just added fuel to the fire.

How can we get them to give money when our alumni is to busy trying to get their kids into Alabama and Auburn.......

AAs seem FULL OF EXCUSES for just about anything. But at the end of the day that is YOUR alma mater, YOUR HBCU, YOUR choice to not support what got you this far...

Thats what I am talking about. There are so many good things going on at ASU. Its your right, but this is an example of what I am talking about.

I think the education of "giving back" should be implemented in that freshman year adjustment course of college. In addition, there should be a 1 hour exit mandatory presentation class given as part of the exit interview process upon graduation about "giving back." It would require additional staff to take on this, but I think this would help give food for thought to those graduating students who are angry about the financial aid experience and etc.

By the way, I give freely to my Alcorn.

You have choices - give - even if its $50.00 a year.

Give to support sports:

Give to support the band, cheerleaders, sports, stadium, COBA or what ever school or college that you attended - see Gift Category:

HBCUs have to do their part too.

Instead of just asking alums to support, show where that support goes. Provide proof that donations are actually going to the betterment of the Universities.

We also don't help ourselves by constantly being caught up in financial scandal, with administrators stealing and mishandling the schools money and resources. Lets just be real.

I talked to the dean of COBA and she received my donation.
