Tulane football camp Thursday report: Passing game, Josh Rounds, and defensive line clicks in morning scrimmage
If one thing was evident from Tulane’s closed morning scrimmage on Thursday, it was the volatile striking ability of the offense.

Though both the offense and the defense had their moments, the four quarterbacks contending for the starting snap this season combined for 10-of-13 passing and accumulated 254 yards, scoring on two long touchdown strikes.

Jesuit product Tanner Lee connected on the longest pass of the morning – a 75-yard scoring strike to Xavier Rush. Jordy Joseph hit Justyn Shackleford on a 63-yard touchdown.

“It was good,â€￾ Tulane quarterback Nick Montana said. “We moved the ball pretty well as an offense. The quarterback group, we all did well. Everything was coming into place today at the scrimmage so it was good.â€￾
 
Games against LA Tech and Louisiana Monroe will give us a good view of how well Tulane has progressed towards competing against Louisiana 2nd tier FBS programs. Last year Tulane was thrashed by UL Monroe 63-10 and lambasted by UL Lafayette 41-13. Tulane hasn't won but 1 conference championship in 64 years and coming off of a horrendous conference showing. Hence, they should be concerned about all conference foes in lieu of having 2 consecutive 2 win seasons. Good luck to Coach Johnson but he better win against Jackson State or the season can be very long. Look for Tulane to win 4 maybe 5 games this year thanks to a much softer schedule than last year that dropped Ole Miss and Rutgers and picked up S. Alabama (2-11) and Jackson State (FCS).

South Alabama going to be tough this season. Former Alcorn player, Bridges appears to be having a good pre-camp and may end up starting.

I doubt USA will be Ole Miss or Rutgers tough though. It is a game that Tulane has to win if they expect not to be a two win program three years in a row.
 
Tulane used to recruit really well at one point in time. With Shaun King, Mewelde Moore, etc. They used to land some gems from MS, too. It can't be that hard to sell kids on New Orleans and playing in the SuperDome. And I would think they have the means to put together a good program. They should at least be one of the best teams in their conference.

They are building their own staduim now, the won't be playing in the Superdome anymore.

Tulane has recruited really well the last two seasons. Even signed some kids LSU wanted.

Jrock I'm not sure about that. Didn't they win Conference USA in 98 when they went 12-0 with Shaun King?
 
Tulane Luck changed when LSU emerged into a powerhouse, they went from being just about equal to LSU to LSU highly superior to Everyone in the STATE.. I believe when LSU took the National Stage in the Late 90s the entire state took a hit in the quality of Football for the rest of the State Universities

I'm sorry but Tulane has never been "just about equal to LSU." (unless you count prior to 1949) The series record is 22-69. 18 of those victories pre-dated 1949. Tulane use to put good products on the field once and a while but not championship caliber.

Dont remember LSU having championship caliber teams until the Late 90s.. In when i say about equal, i mean in getting the athletes, LSU WAS NOT superior until Nick Saban Came.

LSU did not but they were still head and shoulders better than Tulane. I am addressing Tulane vs. LSU not what LSU did in the 90's. Again, Tulane hasn't been consistently on LSU level in over a half of a century. LSU is riding on a 18 game winning streak since 1983 (including going 6-0 against Tulane in the 90's and 8-2 in the 80's and 8-2 in the 70's and 10-0 in the 60's) Those simply are not competitive numbers. If you don't call that "superiority," I don't know what it is.

Since 1949 LSU leads the series 46-4 and two ties

The Times Picayune and the Gulf South Giant WWL along with other Louisiana media outlets have always tried to make Tulane bigger than what they were sports wise........I never bought in to the propaganda.....
 
Tulane has some sports where they made noise at various times, but have fallen off. Football had like 1-2 seasons in the 90s and 2000s where they were good. Women's Basketball has been consistently good including winning 3 straight matchups with LSU. Their baseball program was almost elite level a few years ago, but now they have fallen to a mediocre level.

Their men's basketball program was good during the 80's before the point shaving scandal came out with Hot Rod Williams.

Stroke is right....when LSU struggled with Dinardo (sp) in the mid-90s Tulane was nearly as respected as they had pro quarterbacks...when LSU began to emerge then Tulane really struggled....but they also botched that coaching hire and brought in Scelfo instead of Rich Rod.

Its like La Tech women's basketball....they dominated when no one cared about the sport but LSU decided to care and that program dropped overnight

Yeap and La Tech botched their hiring process after Leon Barmore retired. He wanted Kim Mulkey as the coach, but they messed up the hire. Really LSU didn't really turn the corner in women's basketball until they got Seimone Augustus, but once she and Sylvia Fowles left, they have came back down to earth. Keep your eyes on ULL's football program. They will only have their coach for 1 more season before some big school hires him away. Will they make the same mistake?

If Tulane can convince those local players to stay in N.O. and play for them, they should be able to make some noise in the AAC.

Tulane should have been playing LA. Tech years ago until present. That program is more on Tulane's level.
