Texas Southern University has suspended its renowned "Ocean of Soul" marching band as officials investigate alleged hazing.

The incident was reported on Wednesday to school authorities, prompting a campus police investigation, a news release issued late Thursday said.

"While it is not known at this time how many students were involved in this incident, it is believed to involve one section of the band," the statement said.

The suspension canceled Thursday's scheduled band performance at TSU's football game against Sam Houston State University.

Besides the police probe, university officials have convened along with student affairs, which will "take appropriate action," the release said.

The investigation is being led by multiple school officials, including a vice president for student services, student compliance officers, human resources director, director of bands, general counsel, TSU law enforcement officials and a communications associate vice president.

Higher education officials nationwide have been on heightened alert for band misconduct after last year's hazing-related death of Robert Champion, a drum major of the famed Marching 100 at Florida A&M University.

TSU has made attempts to educate its students about the dangers of hazing.

"The university presented multiple training and informational sessions to band members and other student organizations," the news release said.

Man this is getting sad. If HBCU's cared more about football then the bands we would be okay.....

just representative of many AA mindsets...Change is bad. Well CHANGE has arrived and they are fighting it (poorly IMO) by continuing to do the same things, ignoring the obvious that old ways are no longer acceptable and they are NOT going to be able to go back/stay with them, then looking like deer in headlights when they handcuff them and flash a camera bulb in their face as they put them in the squad car. :smh:

While bad, this isn't endemic to HBCUs or the mindset if black people. There was frat at a PWI pinched for engaging in alcohol enemas. Who does that? Short of jail time and banishment, folks are going to push the envelope because those who break rules don't care about them and don't believe they will get caught.

TSU what is up with all of the things going on there? Seems like week there is something going on there. :smh:

Everybody is going to taste some of this, cause every HBCU has hazing (along with PWCs). And what is most hypocritical, is old heads, especially greeks, talking about what is going on nowadays. A big part of the problem are old heads coming back on the yard talking about how you did it back in the day.

Truth be told, I am kinda glad FAMU got the worst of this, as we are strong enough to survive and thrive. Just remember how you jumped on us when it is time for your band to be put on front street. The more these stories come out, the more people are not going to tolerate being hazed and come forward. It is cleansing time.

Yep, it was PV's turn two weeks ago.

Kendrick, I was reading a few months ago about a Black student at Cornell (pwc) who was pledging a white fraternity die from alcohol poisoning. They duct-taped his hands behind him and poured alcohol down his mouth til he passed out. Then the white fraternity just dumped him on a couch and left him there all night. Next morning he was dead.

The 2 white fraternity boys that poured the alcohol & duct-taped his hands were charged with a misdemeanor.

That's horrible. Simply horrible. But the only way hazing stops at all levels in all organizations is if kids feel that going through that process is not worth it. That being part of a band or frat is not worth life and limb.

Can't blame it on just this generation. hazing has been going on for generations in marching bands and other organizations.

NOPE...it has not young blood! When we auditioned and got accepted that was honorable enough! Well at least back in the day we did not do that stupid azz gotdayum pledging bullsh!t.

I remember marching around Southern's campus singing the fight song, spirit, and the crab song. I'm sure that doesn't happen anymore. During my freshman year at Southern in the Fall of 1983, freshmen in the band was used as a good way of exciting school spirit on campus. I still remember standing in front of Smith & Brown Student Union singing spirit and the fight song just before the weekend of Bayou Classic as Mama Jag directed us on. Seems like the stuff freshmen are required do, progressively got worst over the year.

Jag89,

It depends on who is left to be in charge. When everything became illegal and things went WAY underground, people started getting hurt. The stuff you mentioned is called hazing in 2012.

And you also have to realize that this new generation had time out. We had azz whoopings. So their go thru physical and mental shock. They told their parents what to do and got everything easy.

:read: you are definitely not lying CJ. The difference is, the process lost it's direction when everything became hidden. When you could see what was happening you could keep it in check. When the process became frowned upon and hidden away and ultra-secretive, there was no REAL level of control

Well that Alpha got killed at Morehouse in 1988. That was when you could still see the lines out. They use to attend all the AUC games with all the lines sitting together. Clarks, Morehouse, Morris Brown and Ga St.

You mean when Greek Letter Organizations went from pledging aka above ground pledging to intake programs. Omega was the last greek letter organization to adopt the intake program. Spring 1990 was the last time Omega had pledge lines.
