Saints make Drew highest paid player in the NFL

At long last, by 3 p.m. next Monday, Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints will finally have agreed to a new five-year contract. It will be the biggest upset of the NFL season if they don't.

The two sides will probably keep haggling over the details right up until the July 16 deadline. But it will be stunning if Brees doesn't ultimately sign a contract worth somewhere between $19.2 million and $20 million per year, making him the highest-paid player in NFL history

Wow. It's amazing that a team can afford to pay a single player that much per year. It's mind-boggling to think what the salaries will be 10 - 20 years from now.

I can imagine those same words being uttered after Nolan Ryan signed MLB's first $1 million contract more than 30 years ago.

True.

It's something to think about though. Especially, when early NFL players played for a few bucks and a ham sandwich. Still had to get jobs during the off-season. Things have come a long way.

The Golden Era of Baseball TV show, which chronicled the players, teams and personalities of the 1950s and 1960, talked about that.

And it was interesting to learn that almost every player and manager had to go back working at the local drug store, gas station or continue their 9-to-5 as car salesmen in the offseason.

Could you imagine Drew Brees working as a cashier just weeks after winning the Super Bowl?

Nah.

What we need to look at is how it was done. Television, merchandising, licensing .... There may be something for HBCUs to learn there. I know there is a big difference between making money as a professional sports franchise and college sports, but there may be enough similarities to utilize some of what they are doing to make money.

Well the biggest difference is the NFL fan will spend bib bucks and the average cheap HBCU fan will not.

I would not give this old man that kind of money for not winning another Superbowl because trust there will be no more SB's for the Saints anytime soon!

Let's get this done...I've been saying it all off season long. Drew's worth that money and then some!

Actually NFL attendance has gone down over the last few years. Fans are opting to stay home and watch the games on their big HD TVs in climate controlled man caves.
