Private Texas JUCO Shuts Down Athletic Department

Thought this was interesting. I know a lot of kids that they tried to recruit when their football program started back up a few years ago. They would have officially joined one of the powerhouse JUCO football conferences this fall.

Hundreds of area athletes no longer have a team. Lon Morris College has decided to shut down its athletic department.

The East Texas school shut down for the summer last month, furloughing nearly every employee.

It's the end of an amazing run for long time men's basketball coach and athletic director Dale Dotson. Dotson spent 23 years coaching at Lon Morris, winning over 400 games. He had hoped to win number 500 in the next two years. That will not happen, as men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's and women's soccer as well as track and field teams are no more. Around 300 student athletes looking for a new school.

The football program had just been brought back 2 years ago under head coach Johnny Richey. The team was set to play in the Southwest Junior College Conference later this year.

I never understood why anyone would want to attend a private Juco.... paying 4-year university prices for a juco makes no sense.

I agree. They started recruiting for the upstart football program back in 09 even though they would not officially join a conference until this fall. The scholarship that they offered my cousin would not have even covered room and board. SMH I just thought it was a weird situation to begin with and I encouraged him not to attend.

The bigger issue is that the school is in jeopardy of closing. My pastor mentioned this last Sunday. The United Methodist Church is cutting support for the school. Alleged financial mismanagement.

The school is completely shut down this summer and this is one of the first institutions in Texas to furlough its faculty and staff members. Things aren't looking up unfortunately.

Some student athletes at the H.S. level may not qualify to attend a higher level institution. Although, they have a continued desire to play/participate in organized sports or have dreams or x-fering to a higher level. The juco has it's place in the world.

Not a private one $13K/year. I am all for JUCOs... just not if they cost more than a 4 year school.

Quit hating Sleeper. I would put my boys from East Texas up against your Houston boys anyday. All we do is win in the sticks :emlaugh:

No hate here my sister, I'm thinking that someone from the 3rd coast needs to be down there observing exit interviews.

1 or 2 of those 300 athletes may be deserving of an opportunity to bring their talents to 3rd ward.

Also, we may want to add that Bball coach to T. Harvey's staff. Sounds like he knows how to win, and word is t.harvey looking for some new assistants.
