All of Alcorn's games in the 2012 Swac Baseball Tournament can be heard on wprl.org. All of the Swac Tournament games can be heard on swac.org. Charles Edmond and Santoria Black will call all of the action.

No televison during the opening round games and semifinals. The champiionship game can be seen on espn3.com. The championship game will be shown on ESPN U(Tape Delay) Monday night at 7 P.M. CT.

2012 SWAC Tournament
Good news for SWAC tournament: It never rains at Lee-Hines Field

OK, so maybe we’re tempting fate here. Maybe we’re teasing the baseball gods a little.
But the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament begins Wednesday at Lee-Hines Field, and if our friends at the National Weather Service are correct, we should should be in the clear all week.
Here’s the forecast for Baton Rouge, from Wednesday through Sunday:
Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 63. Calm wind.
Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 87. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph. Wednesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 61. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm.
Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 90. Thursday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 62.
Friday: Sunny, with a high near 91. Friday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 64.
Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 87. Saturday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 67.

Sometimes, he watched his teammates playing baseball from the top row of the stands at Lee-Hines Field, wishing he had worked just a little harder.
DeMario Ellis was never more than a few hundred feet from the home dugout. But in many ways, as Southern closed in on another conference championship in 2009, Ellis could not have felt farther away.
He should’ve been in that dugout, playing with the guys, helping them win the Southwestern Athletic Conference title.
Instead ...
“I had a few little issues,” Ellis said. “I messed up. It was a great season, man. A great team and a great time. And I missed out on it.”
Essentially, he had come all the way from Pasadena, Calif., to do two things: play ball and earn a degree.
In ’09, he couldn’t play ball. And he hadn’t gotten very far toward earning that degree.
The year before, as a true freshman, Ellis stabilized the middle infield with a dependable glove and arm.

The tournament begins

Tuesday morning, the tarp was off the diamond at Southern University, where young ballplayers and event staff spent much of the day preparing Lee-Hines Field for the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.
Eight teams were pulling into town, and Barret Rey’s ballclub from Alcorn State was one of them. Rey sported a grin as the Braves’ practice ended. Sunlight bounced off his shiny bald head.
The weather is lovely — and if the forecasters are correct, it’ll stay that way through the weekend. By Sunday, we’ll crown a champion.
As Rey and the Braves geared up to face Grambling at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Rey confirmed he’d send his ace, Steve Easter, to the mound.
Said Rey, whose team won last year’s tournament in Shreveport: “I’m not going to change anything. I learned that from (Roger) Cador.â€
Here we go.

Alcorn State, the reigning tournament champion, began this season with a 3-17 record. They’ve committed 107 errors this season — fifth-most in Division I — and reliever Chris Garza, who leads the team with 19 appearances, will miss the tournament with an injury. But Barret Rey has won this tournament as a pitcher, assistant coach and head coach. Don’t count him out.
Inconsistent Tigers have won here before
It’s been a strange ride for Grambling. The Tigers looked like early favorites, winning five of their first six Western Division games — including a sweep of Southern at Lee-Hines Field. But Grambling took a midseason tumble, dropping three home games at SU, before rebounding at the end of the regular season. No SWAC team has more hits, runs or RBIs than Grambling, which sports a .290 team average.

Southern does about-face going into SWAC tournament

Their defense was a mess, their approach at the plate abysmal. The Southern baseball team had dropped game after game, wasting a bushel’s worth of quality innings from a strong pitching staff. Roger Cador was out of patience.
Oh, his Jaguars had potential. They just weren’t winning, and that frustrated the old coach, who’s still thirsting for his 15th Southwestern Athletic Conference title in 28 seasons.
So, after one practice in mid-March, during a stretch in which Southern dropped eight of nine games, Cador ripped into his guys, going up one side and down the other.
Why couldn’t they concentrate? Why did they make the same mistakes? When were they going to get it together?
Shortly thereafter, catcher Clint Ourso and left fielder Taylor Roy — two team leaders, two seniors who transferred to SU for a chance to win a championship — came to Cador with a directive.

I haven’t been on the beat but for a couple of days, but it doesn’t take long to see that this Jackson State baseball team can pitch.
JSU enters the SWAC tournament, which begins Wednesday, boasting two of the winningest pitchers in all of Division-I.
Senior righthander Quintavious Drains is 11-4 on the year. Only Army’s Chris Rowley (11-0) has as many wins. No one has more.
Then there’s sophomore Desmond Russell, who carries a 9-2 record into the postseason. Combined, that’s 20 wins. As a team, JSU has won 34 games. Math has never been my strong suit, but that’s quite a big chunk of wins amassed by two guys.
“That’s been huge,” JSU coach Omar Johnson said. “The numbers that those guys have put up, shoot. Those guys have to do well for us to do well.”

I just got off the phone with JSU baseball coach Omar Johnson, who, along with his team, arrived in Baton Rouge earlier today for the SWAC tournament that gets underway tomorrow.
JSU (34-14) pulled into town as the No. 1 seed out of the Eastern Division after claiming the divisional crown thanks to a 21-3 record in league play.

TSU,PV Baseball coaches Forging quite a rivalry
Texas Southern baseball coach Michael Robertson and Prairie View A&M coach Waskyla Cullivan first became associates in 2001 when the former was head coach at Houston's Forest Brook High School.
Robertson recalls that Cullivan, a former player and student assistant at Prairie View, was persistent in trying to get a position on his*staff.
"It's kind of tough to get to me," Robertson said. "It takes awhile for me to open the doors and allow anybody to come in, because I'm just kind of conservative and try to feel people*out.
"But he kept banging at me, showing up at practices, watching us and telling me he was from Prairie View. Eventually, I gave him an opportunity, and he ran with*it."
