Howard University has suspended all of its intercollegiate athletics teams for what appears to be a violation of NCAA rules. University spokeswoman Kerry-Ann Hamilton issued this statement:
It is with great regret that we have temporarily suspended intercollegiate athletic competition. This is a self-imposed action while the University conducts a review. We are working quickly to resolve this issue.
More details as they become available.
UPDATE 3:21 p.m. Coppin State athletics spokesperson Roger McAfee tells us that he hasn't haven't been informed whether the school's upcoming softball matches with Howard have been suspended. Howard lacrosse is also scheduled to play at Wesleyan next week. A rep at Wesleyan tells us, "I'm not aware that they have suspended our upcoming game."
UPDATE 3:27 p.m. Here's the reaction from one Howard athlete, who didn't want to be identified speaking publicly about the situation: "This whole situation is frustrating, and it shows how things within athletics need to be reformed and fixed. Many athletes have had their eligibility taken away and that has affected many sports dramatically. This needs to serve as a learning experience for both the athletes and the department."

Compliance issues...they allowed them to use the remaining money from a book voucher on whatever they wanted and now they are making the athletes pay it back before they can register for classes? This is strange...real strange..Did they just hire a new compliance director or something?

Southern U. and Howard had a real nasty rivalry between 75-80. These two teams literally couldn't stand one another and even have a bench clearing brawl. I wish them the best of luck though. The series had to be terminated.

Whoa....and wow!! This is a knee jerk reaction though in my opinion.

I have to contact my "nephew" at Howard to see what's up? Hopefully not... they were heading in the right direction in football.

I am assuming it is tuition, room and board. The examiner had a story three weeks ago with the figure at 28k.
http://www.afro.com/sections/news/washington/story.htm?storyid=74074

For the 2011-2012 academic year, it costs about $41,000 a year for an undergraduate to attend Howard, including room and board and fees and a base tuition of about $18,000, up from about $38,000 for the 2010-2011 term. The total cost for the 2011-2012 term at George Washington University for undergraduates is about $58,000.

Story not pulling up. The story in the examiner had tuition room and board at 28k, four weeks ago, it was mentioned in a meeting that Howard's Board of Trustees were strongly considering a proposal for a $13k increase (not sure if that is all tuition or tuition, room and board). That is where I came up with the 41k number.

They are losing money on the Hospital now since all of the uninsured patients come there in the aftermath of DC General closing.
