Advising your child to get a degree just for the sake of going to college

Both, some of these schools got some shady recruiting tactics.

I whole hardheartedly agree on shady tactics...but folks have to understand there are not any easy routes to a payday.

I guess I'm mad because I try to talk to the people about the benefits of hard work and the slow route and they tell me they are straight. When it blow up folks coming running to me. I don't stick a knife in the wound, I just listen and say "that's a shame".

Everyone ain't lost from 18-23 though. I actually recommend someone going to the academy though. The kids I finish high school with that went straight into the military aren't doing much these days. They stuck at a low level or have gotten out and have not done isht with their lives.

I poised this question to JR last year when Bin Laden got killed and the picture of Obama's national security team was released. I think the military can be great but some people seem to go in and come out worse. I think the idea that the people need the military to teach them self-discipline is absurd.. All I needed was my civil rights era/angry black male father.

I did not say discipline, I said focus. Discipline is the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using punishment to correct disobedience. Focus is an act of concentrating interest or activity on something. Some people just don't know what they want early in life like others do. Some think they know then find out later they took the wrong path. The one advantage that the military offers is the opportunity to be train in something (especially in fields such as IT, health services or even something like plumbing…do you know how much plumbers charge these days?) all at the government's expense and they will pay you. if you decide you don't like what you are doing just get out and go do something else…most likely still at the government's expense. Also, if you are a f$&kup from the start, the only thing that is going to change you is you.

I think every AA kid should be pushed to get a degree...and parents should mentor and FOCUS their kids on what career they truly are interested in. What I see is kids shucking and jiving, not being serious about their life, the parents not giving them the guidance and pressure to be serious and when they graduate...they still have the mentality of a freshman with no real future outlook in their heads. I see this with my own kids sometimes...but withhold some money until they understand what has to be completed...and it works.

As far as steering them into fields that are paying so much more...make sure the kids has an aptitude/attitude/and desire to be there otherwise, mediocrity will abound and they will fail. Don't believe all the hype, jobs are available...folks just want the plum jobs. Case in point, I was SHOCKED when Yahoo had an article listing most agriculture majors as obsolete in the future. I couldn't believe that an area that is the largest employer and is the producer of foodstuff was deemed obsolete...so out of touch...

Maybe, the trend should be to advise your child how to go to school without incurring a huge loan bill...

Technology.

I don't think college is for everyone. I do think having a trade is needed for some students, while others should aim for college. Also I never knew black folks who went to college and got a general studies degree until I met my cousins girl friend from Chi-town some years back. Those degrees were really created for the white chick going to college looking for a husband to be a house wife or the rich yuppie waiting to take over their fathers business.

I believe that if you can find a way to make a living by doing what makes you happy, then the money will come naturally. Problem is that a lot people aren't happy doing what they (are paid to) do.

I would encourage my kids to make a living doing what makes them happy...even if that means getting a degree in Garbage Collecting. If they are happy and they are getting paid for it, then I am happy. Just gotta trust the kids to find their way, and we have offer them guidance.

In 2012, I don't believe this is a true for a large group of people.

I concur.

You can't eat a keyboad...I can't believe that someone would write off food infrastructure jobs as obsolete. Its just mind boggling.

I recently had a conversation with someone from USDA about how people are now operating tractors and basically running their farms from their Iphones and Ipads using GPS technology. I assume that the upgrades in technology means that fewer and fewer experts will be needed. Add that with ability to cheaply import things these days and I can see the reason for the decline.

Truthfully, if the govt did not subsidize ag so heavily in this country, I think there would be fewer jobs.

For the record, Colorado Tech is a real accredited school with a brick and mortar campus. And their Engineering program is ABET.

Accreditation is not really hard to get, unfortunately. I hope Gainful employment knocks some schools out though

Not ABET. You have to be a real engineering school to get ABET.

He's caught up on name brands.

Pop, your assumptions are incorrect. The technology isn't there to raise animals like that. And how--since you eat everyday like everyone else--aren't you grasping the concept that food productionwill always be with us?

It sounds to me like paren'ts and kids aren't chosing the right school for their/their parents bucks. They aren't hiding hte cost of tuition...seems like some of these folks would try a cheaper school in another state to save the money. Where is the prestige when you run out of money before finishing your education at the prestigious school?

CT,
Wasn't there a big fuss about big companies raising a bunch of animals in small quarters. Aren't these megacompanies putting more and more small farmers out of business? I don't know as much so I am asking. I watched that Food Inc documentary and it made it seem as companies like mosanto were monopolizing that industry.

As far as the production of food. For a large part, we can get it the same way we get most other stuff; pay some chap in a third world/developing country slave wages to produce it and import it.

and for the record, I was just using Colorado Tech as an example. I haven't looked at anything about the school's profile.

Pops, that food from third world countries is why teenage girls look at 40 year old women on the azz and chest. Yall can have that stuff.

Actually, I think you have it backwards.. Those steroids that American companies are pumping in animals is why these girls are developing. The third world countries are giving us diseases and killing us.

I agree 100%. Everyone is not meant to go to college. Some will be better off doing a trade. Also, many business owners don't have a college degree.

Some may not have degrees, but they have an entrepreneurial spirit. That's something that you can't learn in a classroom even if you get a degree or certificate in Entrepreneurship.

Vandy is a good public school. I was a liberal arts major in undergrad (mass comm) and I can tell you, until I enrolled in grad school, my resume was not getting much attention at all. One semester of grad school and I started getting interviews.

I will agree that if a student plans to go to grad school, getting a cheap liberal arts degree isn't a bad idea.

I have a similar story. My original intention was to go to Law School, so I chose English as a major. Once I decided against that, I went out into the real world armed with just a BA in English. I was stuck with menial and meaningless jobs until I went to grad school (oddly enough, at a for-profit). I'm still not balling by any means, but I know for sure that I am doing better now that I would have been if I just relied on my BA.

I agree. I think one degree/certificate program that makes the least sense is "Entrepreneurship".
