Doug Williams is afraid of competition

I guess I should have been more specific in my criticism of Doug and his scheduling. I should have said that he is afraid of "white" competition.

SOG,

I understand your pain but this falls on the lap of the AD. The AD makes the schedule not the football. So what you need is an AD who is not a puppet for the coach. For example, when Culberson was the AD, we had the best schedule in BCF every year because Culberson did not interact with Hughes on that level. He was Hughes boss and he gave Hughes the schedule to play. The same goes for Culberson with Bell. He never gave Bell a cupcake schedule. However, when Braddy took over, he allowed Comegy to give his say about the schedule. We will see how things with Dr. Fuller. I don't think she is going to cater to Comegy but we shall see.

That's part of our problem at Grambling. We can't keep ADs. In the past 10 years we have had 6 ADs serve in an interim or permanent role.

Al Dennis - Fired
Duer Sharp - (Interim)
Willie Jefferies - (Released, when it was learned that he was planning on leaving to go back to S.Carolina at the end of the year)
Troy Mathieu - (Resigned to take another position)
Lin Dawson - (Resigned shortly after Doug came back)
Aaron James - (Interim)

And Chico Dawson will start on April 1. He will be our 7th AD in 10 years.

Andre Robinson is a great coach I wish Alcorn would interview for the Head Coaching Job. BUT, I know he has been for Grambling through rough and the good times and I can do nothing else but respect that. GREAT COACH!!!!!

An excellent coach and really great ambassador for the program... that's my part of my point. WE (Grambling) have an excellent staff and some guys who really get after it in recruiting. Not just Doug and Andre but also Coach Vyron Brown and DB Coach Culpepper who brought in some really nice prospects from Florida. Those contacts he has will be huge. That's why I want to get on the field with these in-state schools and better
regional competition so that we can start getting these 2 and 3 star recruits from La that's going to Southeastern (like the Rogers kid from Amite).

Unless those close to Doug can convince him of the benefit of playing in-state schools, we can forget him listening to the new AD. Hell, he once defied then President Favors and went public criticizing him for scheduling a game versus Nichols State. Doug played the game (we whupped in Thibodeaux) and let Nichols out of the return game the next year so that we could go to Atlanta and play Morris Brown before less than 4K fans.

Yall let me know how the "AD having final say on the Schedule" thingy works out!

Regardless, we are not trying to talk to any 1-AA teams with MS State on the other end. They are the same way with us. I have seen it happen MANY times. Heck, when we played New Haven it was becasue USM kept us hanging on for months with a "maybe" and then finally told us no. This still happens.

...and whatever Valley did to get out of the game, kudos to them. I hope this is our last trip to Starksville. I would rather play Delta State.

Valley didn't do anything.
Valley was really hurting then. Nobody knew what type of team Valley would have based on the previous season and recruiting and coaching woe's. New coach, no recruits and Mississippi State saw no reason to schedule what would be a real massacare by the end of the 1st QTR. They just quietly agreed to not play the game this year.

As for playing Miss State, I have no problem playing them or USM every 3 years. I have always said we need to schedule Delta State for our 1st game of the season at home every year we can. Play a really good D2 team to get our guys off their azz and focused early AT HOME in Memorial. Miss State and USM are just novelty games that everybody know, barring a perfect game and a few answered prayers by JSU, they are going to win. That do nothing for our guys.

Yeah, I remember that very well. Who the hell (who has a clue) breaks a home and home contract with a school after you have already spent the money to play the first game at their place? You finish it by reaping the benefit of not having to spend the money of a road trip the following year. But like you said, he spent money the following year to play Mo Brown in Atlanta. And to think some Grambling folk had the nerve to suggest that he become AD at Grambling.

He was afraid to play them white folks again the next year.

Well, that is how it should be. Doug should only see the schedule. If Culberson was over there at GSU, Doug would just have to be pissed... I get the feeling that Dr. Fuller ain't no joke either and she had the President on her side. Comegy better look at his schedule, say "got it", and keep it moving.

I remembered that game. Sitting out there in Mo. Brown stadium freezing. Sitting right below JSTUS and Bruce Eugene's mom all while I was clowning Bruce. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It wasnt anyone at that game either. :xeye: LOL!!!! I know I sat there thinking I would have a better time in a strip club or somewhere.

Hell, I'd like for us to play Delta State.

I think Delta State is the best in-state game we can play. They are larger than both Alcorn and Valley and they have an alumni base comparable to ours. They are a respectable program and a much better test for us than a 1-A team. Playing DSU is the same as playing a 1-AA team in my opinion.

I agree.

I remember that game too. (and the absolute classless display by Gram :retard: )
Yall wrong about the attendance though, cause it was a good crowd.
By who's standard? Mo B's? Yeah, it was the 4th quarter and I remember Brugene STILL throwing bombs when the game was well out of reach. I clowned him about that too.

The numbers (facts) contradict your conjecture. In 7 years Doug has played 7 games against PWC. If you take your emotions out of it for a minute you will realize this is really not a Doug problem. Grambling has always played PWC and as someone stated earlier, really scheduling is an AD function. Also, Grambling should be commended for helping Morris Brown and Savannah State for scheduling games with them when they were I-AA independence and trying to find a conference and games. If Doug had any influence over these 2 games he should be commended.

Delta State, Ark Mont, or UNA would be good 1st game test for our teams AT HOME. No cakewalk if you slip so you would have to be focused right out the locker room door.

YEP.......
JSU, Valley, and SFA found out the hard way. Come in slipping against them if you want. Mcneese had to pull away from them in the 4th in 2008 and Northwestern La escaped on a last prayer interception for a 24-23 win last year. Northwestern kicked a field goal on the last play of the game.

I'll like to play N. Alabama.

Yep

I was at the games against Grambling and TXSU and you are correct those attendance numbers are wrong......Morris Brown's band was better than both of them too. :emlaugh:

God knows I've been wanting Southern to get Southeastern and Nicholls back on the schedule. I wouldn't mind seeing the Nation take over Hammond once.

It has often been said that stats don't lie, but it is the interpretation of those stats that vary. Fact: Doug did play McNeese, but he had to have his arm twisted to do so. He would not have played that series if he didn't think he could win it. When the series was completed, and after both school experienced record crowds (with Doug getting his ass kicked both times), McNeese wanted to continue the series, but Doug declined. This was one of those "they wouldn't play us back in the day games".

Portland State: It was a classic game and a great win for the program. I wish we could play more games against opponents like these.

Nicholls State: MB and I have already explained the facts previously in this thread. Go back and read it. Doug broke that agreement which was previously arranged by the freaking university president. I to this very day I scratch my head on how/why he was allowed to do so. This was one of those "they wouldn't play us back in the day games".

Louisville: A money game against a team that was ranked in the top 25 that year. He had nothing to lose by playing them. We too have already discussed this in this thread.

San Jose: One of the most embarrassing losses in school history (my opinion). This too was previously discussed.

ULM: Was already scheduled. Doug had no choice but to play them. If he wasn't bitchin about comp tickets for his players BEFORE the game, he was bitchin about alleged racial comments made by ULM fans AFTER the game. This too was one of those "they wouldn't play us back in the day games".

The fact remains that in 7 years he has played against 7 PWC regardless of the circumstances. If your contention about the McNeese series is correct, he should be commended for exemplifying an open mind and playing the games. We should not be going on "witch hunts" if facts state one thing and emotions tell us something different. At the end of the day, If the AD schedules it the former Superbowl MVP and 4 times coaching SWAC champion and 3 time SWAC champion as a player has to play the games.

Well stated opinion. We will just have to agree to disagree.

Lets Break this down a little more.. We played 3 D1-A games, and 4 Teams at our Level. Portland was a Great Win (which should be games we target), Nichols (was Garbage, but we still almost lost until pride was dropped and Hymes was back at QB) and McNEESe (well 2 games that we didnt have a chance at winning, they kicked our butts) So in games that we should compete in we are 2-2, with the 2 wins coming from the Best SWAC team in 15 to 20 years

:topic:Grambling had a real good chance of winning that game at Grambling....

You are absolutely wrong about game 2 against McNeese. The cowpolks had to come from behind to beat Gram.
