Doug Williams is afraid of competition

While most of you all are confused on schedules, coaches and fans, all we did at AAMU is go out and scheduled Auburn. But in order to do this; you ask for help from other schools to change a date so you can play your school of choice. Now that we are playing Auburn, the University of Alabama has shown some interest in playing AAMU. I am sure LSU would play SU or GSU if someone would be bold enough to make the request. 70% of the SWAC schools work together in helping each other, but the other 30% will not change anything to help another SWAC school.

You cannot wait until the last minute, but ADs can get the process started by working with the SWAC Office and the school you want to play.

At some point (whether some like it or not) LSU is going to have to play SU and or Grambling due to the fact that they have just about played every in state FBS/FCS program.

But it is a HBCU no one has heard of. It aint Va. State, Virginia Union, Hampton, or Norfolk State. Looks like is a real small Va school like when SU played Allen or whatever school we played in the early 2000s.

You know what I'm talking about.

"We ain't gonna watch us play no white boys."

Why are we talking about 1-A for this game? This is Grambling homecoming and no 1-A school will travel to Grambling for a game.

My view.
With all those FCS schools within 150 miles of Grambling, they could have found a decent FCS opponent for that game.
Northwestern La., Nichols, McNeese, San Houston, SFA, Southeastern La., etc.

Im still tryna figure out why some in the hbcu football world think that the fcs hbcu's are better than D2 football teams. We all know their is a long list of D2 schools that can kick the crap out of swac schools.

Midwestern State
Pitt State
NW Missouri State
Abilene Christian
Central Missouri
TAMU Kingsville
Valdosta State
North Alabama
Grand Valley State
West Texas A&M
Wayne State
Minn. Duluth

But it would be beneath a SWAC school to travel to any of those places.

Thats why I say if you gonna play a D2, make it a good one.
Delta State and UNA come to mind. People laughed and said 15,000 for Delta State wasn't crap. They actually said they would perfer NOT to play Delta State because "them white people ain't comming to Jackson." Truth of the matter is Delta State bring in as many fans as half out SWAC schedule do and.

No midnight calls! Look Doug is my coach and a true Grambling legend. I just disagree with his scheduling philosophy and especially when it comes to scheduling in state schools.
We recruited well and had a very good signing class...But take a look at Northwestern's signing class, in particular the Louisiana kids signed by them. With all due respect to my Grambling alums from
the other states, and the wonderful kids from else where that signed with us I say this
... We're a Louisiana based school and we shouldn't be losing talented kids (THAT WE RECRUITED) to Northwestern.

Play Em, Beat Em, and We Get Em... both on the field and classroom students too. We should play in-state schools, PERIOD!

Northwestern's Signing Class

This is what Isolation and poor leadership do for a conference.
I said years ago this would be our doom when it came to recruiting but people said "other conferences wished they could do what we do" based on freaking attendance at these classics. Kids in Mississippi would rather go to a JUCO than give JSU, Alcorn, or Valley a shot.

Out of the 75 kids left on the top 100 list in Mississippi, only 5 kids went to a hbcu. 2 to TSU, one to JSU, and 2 to Valley. Ya'll saw the list on recruiting day with all those kids signing with Mississippi JUCO's. :smh:

94, every school in the conference has the same amount of time to schedule games. It has yet to be proven that it is more "difficult" to schedule non-conference games in late into the season. It may be the preference of a coach or AD not to play a non-conference game late into the season, but that is an entirely different point. I pointed to others in the HOG that Northwestern and SLU have open dates for Oct. 20th. But in Doug's mind, because they wouldn't play us then, he isn't going to play them today.
Gotcha.
Sounds like the "core" alums need to unite and voice their disapproval of games like VUL. Do you think any alums will be able to change Doug's mind?

Unlike most of my colleagues, I think we should have at least two of these schools per year on a home and home basis. Some interesting and intriguing rivalries could develop.

I was hoping that the Port City Classic would be used for these games... Labor Day Weekend in Shreveport to open the season. These folks would turn out for that...plus you got the Casinos!

I'm gonna feel sooooooome bad when we let that opportunity slip away and La Tech swoop in and take the date and the venue.

I'm frustrated because I know that we could handle these boys... I really don't think Doug is scared, cuz Doug ain't that kinda cat. I say we need to play these schools and establish ourselves ON THE FIELD as
being the top FCS program in the state or region. Right now, scheduling these type teams and avoiding them allows them to say to RECRUITS " They sked!"

A Port City classic with NSU would be good.

Yep...but I wouldn't have them as a yearly opponent. I would rotate various State and Regional FCS programs through there every year. With the Casinos, it being a season opener, that game could grow into 40k fans or more.

See post #67

Im say again.
This is the dumbest thinking ever in 2012. It was dumb thinking for 1998. I'll bet a dollar to a dozen of biscuts that if GRAM called up 3 of those Louisana FCS schools and said this was about mordern day financial sense, and said we want a 2 game contract, home and home on a rotating basis, they would sign in a heart beat. That would take care of the next 6 years.

Any one of us could do that and they would jump on it. We just got lazy AD's with a outdated "classic" mentality for all 11 games.

One day, a light will pop on in our leaderships head and they will realize our problems was caused by us being stubborn and living in the SWAC glory days of the pre-1990's. :smh:

Of course. We had no problem doing that very thing with Northwestern when Broadway was coach.

I miss SU playing NW LA State. I went to some of those games and they were packed. Especially when we opened up the season with them in Mumford.

We had plenty to come out when we played McNeese in Grambling.

Talking about conference wide mentality.
I gave up years ago talking about us scheduling FCS schools. People literally cussed and laughed me and a few other off the thread talking about us "thinking the white folks grass is greener" and all that bullshat. We said schedule school X and they would say "damm them, I would rather play 10 HBCU's." We say playoffs, and they said Fugg that, ain't no money, we got half-million to million dollar classics. What has these "big money" classics and no-OOC FCS competition done for us. Mofo's complaining everyday that they broke with no money comming into the athletic department coffers. :smh:

Now people want to cry, byotch, and moan 5 and 6 years later after we as a conference has become irrelevant in the world of FCS football and sports in general.

Yep.
And they didn't just jump on the chance to play Gram, they leaped like spider man to sign a home and home with Gram. That is exactly what I'm talking about.

That sad part is people think that by suggesting such games, it means that we are some how diminishing who we are as HBCU's.

We used to play NW La., Nicholls, Southeastern LA., SFA, Troy.

We would schedule Southeastern and Nicholls in the same year in the 1980's and early 1990's. Had 4 game contracts with SFA and Northwestern. Even played Missouri State in 1986.
