The Clueless Generation

The Clueless Generation is made up of middle-aged, professionally successful people, who grew up in a nation that featured a mostly thriving economy, low-cost higher education, and some minimal commitment to economic justice. As a consequence, we graduated from school with little or no debt, got good jobs that featured real possibilities for advancement, and have on the whole ended up doing very well for ourselves. A lot of us have also become insufferably smug and complacent.

For the still largely unacknowledged crisis in legal education merely mirrors the vastly larger crisis in our society as a whole.

Millions of young adults are graduating from college and professional schools with massive amounts of educational debt—debt that, thanks to sweetheart legislative deals that lined the pockets of bankers, cannot be discharged in bankruptcy. In just the past decade, total outstanding educational debt in America has risen more than five-fold, from $180 billion to nearly $1 trillion.

Meanwhile, the international crisis of global capitalism has led employers large and small to do everything possible to cut labor costs. This has produced the current 15 percent official unemployment rate among Americans in their 20s.

What the Clueless Generation finds difficult to comprehend is that literally millions of highly educated and hardworking young Americans—people who followed all the rules and did everything we told them to do—are either severely underemployed or have no jobs of any kind. Meanwhile, they struggle with the massive educational debts they incurred after the baby boomers decided that access to the bargain-priced higher education from which we benefited wasn’t so important after all.

The cost of degrees steadily increased while the value of them steadily decreased. This is simply crazy. The end result is only inevitable, a financial bubble.

The student loan debt bubble is going to pop like Big League Chew pretty soon. And all those Baby Boomers will see the residual effects

At the heart of the occupy wall-street movement is the seeds of a revolt against the Ivory tower and the current system that we have in place. There is a generation of people whom have been sold the college dream, only to find out that it was more a college myth.

I can see it that way to a degree.

The bubble can pop - but there is only a very narrow way of getting out of student loan debt - even through bankruptcy - it does not go away.

Kids come out with 60k in student loans, only able to find jobs paying $10/hour and realize that they are basically a slave to Sallie Mae for the rest of their natural lives.

The Clueless Generation is this current one who lack the initiative to do anything but blame others for their problems.

A lot can be put on the type of degree they have.
Don't go to college these days thinking you gonna get a job with an ART or Poetry degree.

 These kids have a mind set of being "Privileged". They want everything handed to them.

Lol, what do you call the executives from AIG, Wells Fargo, Washington Mutual, or Citibank?

If asking for a job is privileged, what do you call asking the Government to inject $50 billion into your failing bank to buy off bad assets after your dumb azz went all willy-nilly handing out Adjustable Rate Mortages (ARMS) and No Money or Assetts Loans (NMA).

Don't forget that $787 billion they got a few years ago as well.

If you want to see privilege, I suggest you read the book below. It is pretty well written and explains what really went on.

Trust me, I am not. I have been reading Henry Paulson's memoir for the past month and it is crazy how these cats could just call and ask the feds for money or to take over their bad assets.

Well said, but the value of education should always be fixed, in my opinion, and maybe allow it to rise but it should be by much so that they can also increase in revenue. The reason why I fill this is because most colleges average about, at least 10.000 people, and when have that many people, along with other revenue ventures the school makes a lot of money and I think that a lot of the universities exploit student's weaknesses, mainly the student(s) is desperate to get into their university of choice, so they can MAKE THE BIG BUCKS is totally wrong so I think especially in the economic era it could at least be lowered drastically so that these people can afford these colleges!

But the poor are demonized for needing to rely on welfare to survive in many cases. Yet, the corporate suits can get what they want with little resistance without anyone demanding they be drug tested first.

Yep. I know a woman who says her son is going to major in classical music, and is looking at expensive private schools as options. I didn't say anything to her, but damn that boy will be just like her (with her art degree) looking for a job.

I agree with this. I personally think we should limit what federal student loans can be used for.
