$27M needed to repair Hale Stadium, says Tennesee State

Tennessee State University made its case Monday to the Nashville Sports Authority to play a portion of their football games next year at their on-campus stadium.

The idea comes with a big price tag: the renovation would cost an estimated $27 million.

"We want to make sure the campus looks and feels like it did, not 100 years ago, but the alumni that are coming back are looking for a campus with those memories," said TSU's interim president Portia Shields.

I would get the hell up outta there. Those OVC schools are not going to help fill that thing up. Move to campus and get it crunk!

130k a year to use an NFL stadium...... U CANT BEAT THAT. 27 million to just be on campus??? This is a no brainer.

Tennessee State hopes to bring football back to campus

By J.R. Lind

Tennessee State University wants to celebrate its centenary by bringing football back to campus.

Interim university president Portia Shields told the Metropolitan Sports Authority Monday that TSU would like to play two games during the 2012 season at Hale Stadium — affectionately known as "The Hole."

"There's a lot of history there, but it's an eyesore," Shields said. " … Richard Dent played there, Too Tall [Jones] played there. It doesn't look the way it was then; it looks terrible. We want to fix it up. We are getting ready to refurbish, to make it attractive."

TSU has a 30-year agreement to play home games at LP Field. That agreement does include provisions to move games back to Hale Stadium, pending approval by the Sports Authority.

Shields did not ask for formal action by the board — the games and dates for the return to campus have to be finalized first — but the authority appeared open to the proposal.

One member, in particular — legendary TSU track coach Ed Temple — was especially fond of the idea.

Temple said he trained his teams, which included several Olympians, on the cinder track rounding the field.

"I have a lot of blood, sweat and tears in ‘The Hole.’ I think I spent more time there than the football team," he said.

Another thing.... where is there to park? There wasnt any parking for CLASS..... Couldnt imagine where people would park for a game. I havent been on campus in about 2 years but didnt they build the indoor facility in what was the parking lot?

Right I was thinking the same thing I would have used the money going towards the stadium instead of the indoor facility but heeyyy it is a nice one saw it last month...

Re: $27M needed to repair Hale Stadium, says TSU

that's how they get those things built as they use the HBCU as the pawn for a few bones

It'll be interesting to see how the other "TSU" does when the new stadium smell wears off in a few years. There's nothing like an on-campus atmosphere from things such as tailgating, etc.

These pro venues are stale, overpriced and treat us like a tenant at best. You gotta get out when the game is over, can't do this in a parking lot, etc.

But at $27 million can TSU make that back without putting it on the back of students? Hearing stories of old track coaches ain't gonna pay no bills.

Big difference with us and them...

Some feel LP Field is too big with a seating-capacity of 68,000 seats.

TSU/Dynamo Stadium seating capacity of 22,000 is a nice fit for the Tigers.

Even better, we can stay and tailgate AFTER games as long as we want to. That's already been worked out with stadium officials.

Re: $27M needed to repair Hale Stadium, says TSU

I don't get it. When JSU talks about playing in off-campus Memorial, people always got something negative to say and clown. Now Tennessee State want to fix up their on-campus stadium and people are in reverse, complaing the same way.

What gives.

Now I agree totally with this.
They should have put those millions into Hale in the first place.

Difference: Y'all seem happy with having 68,000 seats and only filling the thing maybe two times a year. They consistently have mentioned that the atmosphere with all of those empty seats is hurting them, not to mention the OVC not helping with attendance. They don't have a Southern or Alcorn like you do within their conference to help them out ... real talk.

Ahh..................Again.
What is the difference. :noidea:

And remember before you type with JSU hate in your eyes, unlike Tennessee State paying $130,000, JSU DON'T PAY SHAT. Memorial basically PAY US.......(tickets, parking, concessions, other event revenue collected)

As for them not having a SU, Alcorn or whoever, THEY WAS THE ONES THAT UPPED AND JOINED THE OVC. As far as ya'll, helping us out, I have never been to a JSU game in memorial that didn't have Alcorn or precious SU helping us out and the atmosphere was not exactly the same from the home crowd. That is why JSU either lead or is in the top 5 every year in FCS attendance wether SU comes or not.

And on top of that, while ya'll talking about the OVC, most in this conference don't travel worth a crap either. Most don't even show up at their OWN ON CAMPUS STADIUMS for game unless JSU is comming. That "helping out" cuts both ways. :goof:

As for memorial and being "happy", I have not seen or heard one person cussing JSU out because SU did not come to town to "help us out.".......................REAL TALK.

Now again.................what gives.

I could never figure that sh@t out when I was in Nashville. They play in a F@CKIN" NFL STADIUM!!!! What is the problem? The stadium is down the street from campus. Why would you want to play in a dilapidated stadium thart needs 27m in upgrades. :smh:

Another question is what are the ticket prices? At memorial, just like last week, we played unofficially in front of 25-30k fans. TNState does not have that luxury. That makes a difference. If Alabama State comes to town and we only draw 5 or 6 fans, I would not want to be in Memorial. I would rather play in 10K dilapidated stadium. Memorial is too big for us but LP field is def WAY too big for them.

Re: $27M needed to repair Hale Stadium, says TSU

27 mill in renovations? Sounds excessive. Sounds like something MCHammer would do. Might as well build a new stadium with parking.

No hate on JSU for this. Personally, I don't give a damn if y'all play in a high school stadium. Doesn't bother me. Fact is, y'all boost on Memorial like it is the gem and TnSU fans don't do the same to LP Field. That's the difference.

And you can keep that bull about what SU and Alcorn DON'T do for your attendance numbers. I suggest you do some research my friend. Hell, y'all, comparatively speaking, don't show up for your own home games or am I not remembering the famous "It's PV thread" when they were coming to Memorial and y'all said it didn't matter because we don't show up for them.

Just show me a Bama State, Bama A&M, UAPB or either Texas school where Memorial was over 70% full ....

Have you looked at YOUR home attendance.
The only time YOU have sold out Mumford in a decade is when JSU come down
. Alcorn has not had a sellout since McNair left. So again, stop all this ONE WAY crap cause ya'll don't even sell out your on campus stadiums unless JSU comes to town yet you never seem to want to touch that.

And you do have a problem with JSU and memorial. We gonna pump it up because it is where we play but for some reason, that just eats you up inside and it shows in your post. We don't GAS what Tennessee State do. That is real funny to me. Again...............WE are at the top of FCS in Attendance even in the years 500,000 fan SU don't come to town. We are at the top of FCS in attendance when you do come Jackson.

Worry about catching up to JSU in attendance in any year. As for Alcorn, when was the last time that place was full. You want me to show you Memorial when it is 70% full when there are FBS teams that don't have a 45,000 per game average. If you google it up, the all-time record for FCS home attendance in a year is only 37,000 and that was set by GUESS WHO...........JSU.

You don't even make sense because you don't even apply logic to your post when you are ranting about Memorial and JSU. You want to show something, show me little 28,000 seat MUMFORD 100% full when a team NOT NAMED JSU is in the house. I'll be waiting and be warned, I can google up the attendance stats also so don't try to BS me.

JSU has the best stadium in FCS as well as in the top 3 in attendance...Why would anyone even challenge that and we do it with little cost to the University....and we have a large flat screen Jumbo Tron to match most BCS schools...Child Please to anyone who debates the facts........

Re: $27M needed to repair Hale Stadium, says TSU

Back to Tn State I personally think going back "The Hole" would be good for them but they need to make sure the clear off the land directly across the street from the softball field and turn that into a parking lot because they have no open slots on campus to park.......

I just like to watch them gloss over facts and bust gaskets.
Dude want JSU to talk down instead of UP about where we play. JSU is Memorial so why would we not talk about it. Tennessee State is a GUEST in a NFL stadium. They don't have no say so whatsoever outside of turning in their schedule to the people in charge so why would they talk like it is theirs.

Dude just love to rant about ole "Colonel Reb Confederate Memorial" as they like to say. Like him or anyone else has ever came to Memorial for a game and some plantation owner took a bullwhip to him, called him TOBY, and made him pick cotten in the parking lot or something. It is really sad................BUT FUNNY when I'm reading the crap some of these posters post.

Personally I would love to go back to campus IF they renovate that stadium. As ya'll say though, parking would be a nightmare during a JSU / TSU game. maybe a multi-level Parking lot that can double as on-campus parking for students/faculty/guests during the week.

Yall aint going to move that SHC even if Tn State gets Hale redone on their campus. That game in Memphis is a good recruiting tool and it makes sense.

I do agree the multi purpose parking garage is the way to go and leave room for RVs to tailgate. It would be costly though.

As for yall going back and forth on attendance at SU. We just started having attendance issues. We have filled Mumford many times in the 2000s. It was packed in 03 and 04 years. Homecoming was packed as well. It has just been post Katrina since we have struggled with some attendance.

But frat, you have to be true to the facts. Certain games do help JSU win that attendance award. SU was not winning like JSU during the heyday and still packed Mumford. The new school fans at all our schools aint that dedicated. If you played a non sexy schedule and Alcorn home and home. You would see an attendance drop. This aint the 80s and 90s. Folks don't care about the games like talking about anymore. And that's at all HBCUs. Only certain ones they will show up in droves.

I know................ Just saying it would be fun. Memphis would have a stroke if either of us pulled out that game.

As for attendance, people on here act like JSU don't fill their stadiums also. As for Alcorn, they can move their game back anytime they want. If you remember, it was JSU, BRADDY, that put that suggestion out there 3 years ago when we asked Alcorn if we could move the game back to Thanksgiving day even though we was still under CCC Contract. ALCORN SAID NO.

Then they turned around and signed a 2 year extension so them comming to Jackson is all on them, not JSU. People here act like JSU put guns to people heads and make them coime to memorial. Valley left after all those years and we ain't hurt from that. Ya'll don't come here every year and we ain't hurt from that. Alcorn take their game back to the Reservation, we will over come that also. At the end of the day, JSU would still be in the top 5 no matter what year it is. Ain't like we can't drop these D2's and schedule a MEAC HBCU in their place on those years. We could schedule Delta State and they would bring more fans with them into memorial than a lot of the SWAC teams bring.

2003 JSU had its first losing season in years and the stadium still were 30, 40 thousand as far as a sexy schedule thats should've could've would've don't you think...We wont ever have a year where we play Valley Alcorn and SU on the road those are all big attendance games for us...as well as our high school day game against one of the Bammas are usually packed and Homecoming against a PV or PB is usually packed so scheduling is important....So we are just a big time school even in our down years we had numbers except 2005 when the boycott was on...
