It is a problem when a woman (potential wife) tries to replace a man's mother. It's one thing for a man's wife and his mother to co-exist. But 9 times out of 10, if the wife doesn't respect her husband's mother, the wife will get the ax.
Also, how can a woman expect her boyfriend/husband to respect his mother, then expect him to put his own momma to the side for her?
Wives and mothers serve different roles in a man's life. There is a problem when the respect isn't mutual.

I thought "cleave unto" meant "cleve" or cut anything that prevented you from being
"unto" or as one with your wife.
what's your understanding of that scripture?
Maybe the divorce rate is so high because lots of people
don't cleave those things from their life, that prevents
them from being unto.

Let me make my stance clear:
I do understand the "become one" doctrine and have no problem giving my WIFE her due place and respect.
However, this is not the type of woman P~, Cee and I are talking about. Let's not play stupid. We all know of stories where women have rivalries with a man's mom. Where women try to dictate a man's relationships - even his relationship with his mother. Who he can friends with and who he can't and all kind of crazy stuff like that.
Women these days have lost their minds because they don't know their rightful place in a relationship.
Beside the "become one" scripture, there is also another pertinent scripture:
"Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old." - Proverbs 23:22
My parents will always be my parents and I will always honor them and take care of them. My parents are getting older and being the oldest son, that's my responsibility and dammit I'm going to fulfill it. ANY WOMAN who thinks she can dictate the relationship I have with them or what I do for them can kick rocks. That's the nicest way I can put it.
If I were married, of course I would take care of home first. But, any jealousy, discourtesy or disrespect toward my parents will get you smooth cussed out. Period.

Just pointing out the potential for misinterpretation of that scripture...seeing that one (ie "cleve") word has two opposite meanings.
It also means
To come or be in close contact with; stick or hold together and resist separation
To adhere
To be faithful
To adhere firmly and closely or loyally and unwaveringly

So when the mother and the wife (or girlfriend) don't see eye to eye, how does the man in the middle resolve this conflict of interest? If the wife is disrespecting the man's mother and tries to impede on their relationship and he goes with it, he may be cleaving to his wife and showing unwavering adherence. But he is dishonoring his mother at the same time....right?

My take:
You don't stop being a son when you get married.
Many women take that "cleave to your wife" thing and twist it to mean that you should side with the wife no matter how rude, irrational or unreasonable she's being. I don't believe that to be true. To me, this is part of the responsibility of being a man and the leader of your household. Under no circumstances am I suggesting neglecting the wife or not taking care of home, but a man has to be able to do both: take care of home and honor his mother. Sometimes that is tough to do, but that's just a part of manhood.
That "you should always side with the wife" stuff is a twisting of the gospel in my opinion.
