Why are we still having a SWAC Championship game in football?!?! When I saw the title of this thread, I thought Sharp was finally about to try to get rid of this horrible idea since all the SWAC schools play each other now.

If the Presidents ban JSU and SU, look for SCG attendance to drastically decline. This means that potential funding could be lost.
If the NCAA considers the SCG a regular season game, they have no say in the matter.
Like someone stated earlier, JSU and SU do not have the lowest APR ratings in the SWAC and the conference has no set standards for APR ratings in order for teams to qualify for the SCG.
Now, if the SWAC already had set rules in place regarding SCG qualifications, that would be a different story but it doesn't.

If the Presidents voted to ban JSU and SU, they'd be setting a precedent that's never been addressed before the precedent had been set.
If the SWAC Presidents were to be honest and fair, APR rules should already have been set in place and defined before suddenly banning teams from a non-NCAA sanctioned event.

As far as basketball is concerned, that also has financial repercussions. Those rules have already been set by the NCAA and SWAC schools do participate in the NCAA tournament, so I'd understand if basketball teams with insufficient APR ratings were banned by the Presidents.

Which more than likely it will be GUD. I agree with rj also. If they ban SU and GSU from the basketball tournament, JSU and SU should be ban from playing in the SCG. Point Blank, Period but if the only way to send a strong message concerning academics is to band all parties involved. Allow the others that didn't have the problems reap the benefits and that will make the parties involved work harder. The will band the two schools from the SCG, that just allows someone else to step in.

I disagree on this one USA... The SCG is not a post-season game as defined by the NCAA. The SWAC mbb tourney winner goes to the Post-season and therefore (unless a waiver is granted by the NCAA) SU and GSU should not participate in the NCAA mbb tourney. I hate it, but it is what it is!

They are also talking about removing the baseball tournament from Shreveport. All the teams said they were unhappy with the playing field.

:smh:
just as with any other SWAC school, "JSU and SU" only have a bearing on SCG attendance when they make it and they don't make it every year, so don't kid yourself into thinking that next season's SCG attendance will "drastically decline" if Jsu and Su are banned.

If you guys think the SWAC loses out on recruits, let our Presidents not vote on banning JSU and SU. Every FCS school and lower tier FBS would use this against our schools. You guys gotta use your heads for once. Folks already type cast our schools, and now we going to let them be able to say "Why send your child to a SWAC school, they don't care about his academics". Black parents already believe white is right, now you send two schools who the NCAA says are not performing and every PWC in the nation will use this.

Do y'all really expect an East president to vote JSU to remain eligible for the SCG???

I don't expect them to gauge it from that angle. But I still go back to what I said earlier, regardless of how the SCG is viewed technically by the NCAA, we (the SWAC) look at the game as "our" post season.

As for basketball, that ban has to be a no brainer.

This is how the votes will go
aamu will vote no because JSU stops them from going to SCG
bama state same as above
valley same as above, they simply hate JSU
alcorn same as above

Grambling will vote yes because they love the competition of the big 3
txu will vote no because SU stops them from going to SCG
pvu same as above
pine bluff will go with the flow and vote no.

The SCG will be in Jackson and attendance will be better than birmingham even if JSU isn't in the game. JSU will gain from all of this and make enough money in three years to build our own stadium on campus. I've seen the plans for this to happen. When the swac teams do come to Jackson for the SCG they will be reminded of whose house they are in. THE BIG BLUE BENGAL DEN

 Sorry Cee, but this doesnt make any sense. If the Big Boys was going to use that against us, they already would have been using it, cause alot of you all are already below the 900 mark, but since your overall school graduation is low then you all dont get penalized.

Exactly.

I personally don't see the SWAC presidents voting to ban JSU from the SWAC Championship Game.

I do.
like I said on the other thread when this came out. Ya'll can forget about JSU and SU being in the SCG for 2011. Lets hope the SWAC leadership is not that dumb because if they thumb their nose at the NCAA again like they do for the playoffs, I'll gurantee you if those APR scores miss the mark by 1 point, they gonna lay the hammer down.

It's the same as the BCS voting to strip USC of its title. There was no rule against it because it never happened before. However, the elephant in the room is what if more say like 3-5 SWAC Schools don't make the grade in the next couple years? Then half the damn conference wouldn't be eligible for the SCG.

How so? The NCAA has already banned Jackson State and Southern from the FCS playoffs so no further action is needed. Neither JSU or Southern have the lowest football APR in the conference. The NCAA's minimum APR is 900 so they banned both teams. Does the SWAC have a minimum APR standard in order for teams to qualify for the SCG? If not, leave well alone.

Apples and oranges.
SU has never been eligible for the playoffs and JSU and no other SWAC team is getting a bid to the playoffs after our dumb azz commish went on TV and basically told FCS to go screw themselves. The NCAA know this but if the SWAC clowns them again, what do the NCAA have to lose by chopping SWAC schools heads. We took ourselves out of their football loop long ago remember. Thats what people in this conference wanted and now they got it full force.

Well just prepared because they are going to ban SU and JSU for the SCG and GSU and SU for basketball to just make it seem they really care about academics. I already expect it.

I already know it.
It don't take a genius to figure this one out. :smh:

Let it go, mh. Ain't nothing techincal about it. But why wouldn't the prez's look at it from that angle. You take out the main competition, giving your own team a much better chance to make it.

Ok so what happens if the waiver is granted????

The waiver is just for them to play, they could stop the team from playing altogether.

Exactly.

I personally don't see the SWAC presidents voting to ban JSU from the SWAC Championship Game.

Why not? there is money that the Swac receives from the deal with the BCS schools for football. Allowing them to play could jepardize receiving that money.

Is that a "misery loves company" type decision?

JSU and/or Southern playing in the SCG has no potential implications on the conference. Allowing GSU and/or Southern to play in the SWAC Tournament has potential implications for the simple fact that if either of them were to win the conference tournament, it would affect our auto bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Like I said above, there is potetial implications.

The football decisions would have major implications, in my opinion. It would send a horrible message about the priorities of our schools.

So true.....

Folks who think that way are already a lost cause... But when you happen to run across those folks who are gullible enough to believe that, have them to ask that Coach of those schools to give them numbers on their minority graduation rates. You don't have to argue...just say, "check out the rates and if you find them to be better than ours please listen to that coach". I willing to bet that Coach backs off "IF" the fan has the balls to even ask.

Back to topic...We do care about academics. SU and JSU are both good institutions of higher learning...Their respective coaching staffs made some signing mistakes trying to be competitive and it caught them in terms of attrition. If the remnants of kids from SU and JSU overcome the obstacles and rigors of competing on a weekly basis and make the SCG, why punish them over an "image". The NCAA hasn't ruled this a post season game and therefore why not let them play...it costs us nothing in terms of a bid or financial payout. The basketball I can understand because you lose an autobid and money to the entire conference.

Just me...but I say "let em play" (but we know SU ain't got even a remote shot of making it to the SCG...)

They are also talking about removing the baseball tournament from Shreveport. All the teams said they were unhappy with the playing field.

Yeah the playing surface was bad last year I never understood last year he dogged the city and field on the radio then tucked his tail and went back no knock on Shrevport but you dont demand quality it is what you get

Hey.
The SWAC was all fired up to move it out of Mississippi and Trustmark Park in Pearl, (jackson Metro) because of one 1st year, last minute mix-up that could have been worked out easily for that next year. Conference USA just moved their tournament their on a pernament basis. The SWAC got what they wanted by acting on emotion instead of good business.

rob,
Who's to say Jsu or any other team is the "main competition"? (think this time last year, which East team considered ASU the main competition for the SCG? We may get on this board and make bold predictions about what our team can/will do, but we never know and NONE of our teams are at such a level where opponents want them eliminated beforehand. So, I doubt the SWAC pres are sitting around looking at Jsu (or anybody else) as "the main competition". Heck, Valley just end up being "the main competition".

and I'm gonna stand by the SCG is indeed "our" post season game. If not, there would be no consideration. I would doubt the SWAC would be considering additional sanctions to ban any of its schools from a "regular season game".

When did the SWAC begin to care what others thought about our priorities and integrity? Hell, we already told the NCAA that they could kiss our azz when we started our championship game. And for those that's taking the academic integrity angle, don't forget that our defending champs have the LOWEST APR in the country. That same team will have the ability to represent us once again as SWAC champs.
