SWAC Commissioner talks SCG, APR, Post Season Bans & Basketball Tournament

With the SWAC’s annual meetings set to begin tomorrow in Houston, we give you some oh-so interesting nuggets from a conversation we had with league commissioner Duer Sharp (we’ll have this in story form in Tuesday’s Clarion-Ledger).

First, let’s get to the Academic Progress Rate stuff …

-Sharp said there will “definitely” be a vote by league presidents whether to ban or not to ban Jackson State and Southern University from the SWAC football championship game. The two teams suffered postseason bans from the NCAA, but that does not include the title game, which the SWAC plays instead of the NCAA playoffs.

-Asked if he had an opinion concerning the possible football championship game bans, Sharp said, “I really don’t have an opinion. We work for the member institutions. We work for the schools.”

-There will also be a vote by presidents on whether to ban Grambling and Southern from the SWAC basketball tournament. Those two teams suffered postseason bans for low APR. With the SWAC Tournament champion receiving an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, it’s likely the two will be banned from the SWAC Tournament. Said Sharp: “If we allow them into the (SWAC) tournament and they win, we would forfeit our automatic qualifier.”

Would you think it would be fair and send the wrong message if the SWAC bans SU and GSU from the Basketball Tournament and not JSU and SU for the SCG? I'm sure if that happens it would cause some problems. What are your thoughts?

I still do not understand why a SWAC decision regarding basketball could not of been made immediately, but at least the SWAC leadership will address it. Risking an automatic qualifier could have implications on NCAA monies - which the SWAC schools rely on.

Which more than likely it will be GUD. I agree with rj also. If they ban SU and GSU from the basketball tournament, JSU and SU should be ban from playing in the SCG. Point Blank, Period but if the only way to send a strong message concerning academics is to band all parties involved. Allow the others that didn't have the problems reap the benefits and that will make the parties involved work harder. The will band the two schools from the SCG, that just allows someone else to step in.

JSU and/or Southern playing in the SCG has no potential implications on the conference. Allowing GSU and/or Southern to play in the SWAC Tournament has potential implications for the simple fact that if either of them were to win the conference tournament, it would affect our auto bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Allowing GSU and/or Southern to play in the SWAC Tournament has potential implications for the simple fact that if either of them were to win the conference tournament, it would affect our auto bid to the NCAA Tournament.

No implications? It's showing that the SWAC Office/ Presidents are saying to hell with a APR and more specifically saying f-ck academics. If that's the case why ban basketball teams in the SWAC from a playoffs. None of our teams make it pass the first round anyway but banning them is showing that academics is first and doing the same thing in football is really showing that academics is first.:read:

Budget Cuts have hurt school budgets and they have to maintain every dime. If Sharp thinks the band and cheerleaders are the reasons for low attendance then he definitely doesn't need to be the Commish. He has all the nerves. He moved the tournament to Texas where there is much competition, high school play-offs are during that time and Maverick's games. What a dummy!!!!!!!!!!

Basketball and football are totally different and you know that. You have to ban the basketball teams, because the SWAC has the automatic qualifier, and with both teams already baned, you cant take that chance. In football, the SWAC Championship Game is a regular season game.

There is no justification in allowing a team to participate in playing for a conference football championship with APR problems and not allowing teams playing in the basketball tournament with APR problems. That's stood out to me as well. Why would school send their cheer leaders bands and dance teams when they could be eliminated the first day. All that travel and hotel rooms with nothing to show for.

Also, Sharp mentioned that the tournament set attendance records in Garland... sounds good, but why haven't the attendance numbers been released.

Honestly, would you be putting forth an argument if it wasn't for your team?

I bet the Council of Presidents will ban JSU and SU so that they're schools will have a better chance to make the SCG. Which I can't blame them because they need to look out for their own schools. The only way they vote different is if they look at their projected APRs and think they'll be in the same situation in a year or two.

Plus, I agree that although the postseason opportunities are different, why would you disqualify basketball teams and not football teams. It just seems fair, even though technically JSU/SU in the SCG won't cost the conference as a whole like it does in basketball.

I don't care what they say. They banned JSU from post season in football but doesn't consider the SCG post-season, how dumb?????? If the conference is going to start penalizing as they should, make a statement with all parties. Half-stepping doesn't send anything but crap. If the conference is all about academics they should make sure they send a very strong message to all the schools in the SWAC by doing whats right. If the SWAC Office really felt the SCG was a regular season game it wouldn't be up for discussion. Why even allow teams to even be rewarded to participate in a championship game with APR problems? The SWAC should have already made a decision, it's not rocket science.

I saw where Nonchalant brought up that argument on the Onnidan. I hope the SWAC Presidents finally do something right. They must remember the main objectives of educating and graduating students and to vote no to one and yay to another with the same APR problems would really make them look bad.

One additional factor to consider, there is money associated with participating and winning the SWAC Football Championship Game. It will be interesting to follow. I can view arguments on both sides of the issues.
