In the SWAC, “Our limits have been reached,â€￾ says Braddy

...and can you imagine the pressure of a coach having to lead a 1-A conference with FAMU, SCState, AlaState, JSU, SU, Grambling, A&T, TNState etc..

Aside from A&T and possibly AlaState, the fans won't take it and even they won't take it very long. We would be offering $500K salaries tryin to "out do" each other... Say what want, HBCUs or not, that won't be an easy conference to win especially with those schools having a shot at better talent and better coaches. Even looking at last year, I could see JSU's conference record going from 6-3 to struggling to get to 4-3. I also think moving to 1-A would put an end to the Taylor's, Comegy's, Cole's, Broadway's, Barlow's, etc... especially since we might get some decent linemen and can play more traditional football that 1-A assistants can work with.

I think we have untapped potential but someone need to shatter that glass ceiling to realize it.

See this is the kinda stuff i'm talking about TP lol. Where is the money coming from?

Kennesaw State started out as a junior college in 1963.

NO SWAC school has ODU or Georgia State money coming in. You are talking about schools with 25k students.

This is true, but look at their rate or percentage of fans supporting their program. They had a plan, publicized it, organize their fanbase, and got to work-quickly. While Georgia State and Old Dominion may have more money than a SWAC school, it is not like every grad from our school is broke. Their schools are getting results.

I don't know but I that was more a of a joke. However, we saw how SU and Pete got these HBCUs paying over $200K. 10 years ago, it was good for a HBCU coach to make $100K. Now, the top HBCUs pay around $200K. I would hope that wise decisions prevailed.

...and to be honest, I also believe that IF we moved to 1-A, the wall would come down. There is no way, McNeese, NWState, ect...will settle for Grambling taking all of their recruits. I think they would make it just like bball to take away our advantage by making everyone D1 but at least we would have TRIED. I just see stayin put as "not trying"

U are again missing my point and/or misreading my post... i said NONE OF THIS can happen ABSENT of increased support... and we must do something.. I don't care... Move to 1-A! GO! (but we will need increased support to make it work)... Move to another 1-AA Conference! GO! (but we will need increased support to make it work) ... STAY IN THE SWAC! GO! (but we will need increased support even to stay viable there)... I'm with JSU whichever way the leadership decides to go. WE NEED INCREASED SUPPORT though PERIOD. To think moving is the solution in and of itself is not very smart.

Maybe you are thinking i'm equating support to ppl coming to games... NOT. lol.

I will agree on the increased support. The examples have been there for decades.

LOL @ TP. Yeppp heck then we could get Calvin McGee (SU) and Fred (JSU) to come back.... Shoot Sumlin was already trying to get with us before Houston scooped him up!!

BTW where is Fred now? Did Hoke keep him?

Guys, read this in big bold print:

"Winning Leads To Opportunities"

Plain and simple, the product the SWAC has put on the sports field lately has been horrible!!! However, I see some hope in Basketball with a few D-IA upsets as well as baseball and softball. However, the fact remains that football is the number one revenue drawing sport. All the problems associated with football revenue involve the product on the field. How does it help our conference when teams like Tuskegee, NW St, Arkansas-Monticello, etc. come in and beat our teams.

Improve the product on the field (WITHOUT THE EXCUSES OF FACILITIES) and watch and see things become better again.

Also, football SCHEDULING must improve drastically.

One difference i can tell you off the top is when we (GSU) made the Football announcement official, alumni started pouring money out of the woodworks. If you look at how the campus has expanded East towards Grady and North so quick its pretty amazing. From what im hearing they're looking to buy a large plot of land to the NW of campus... they dont plan on playing in the dome long..

Will you guys learn how to comprehend. It is essential. I said name folks you know, not folks who you think you saw on a list. Name your friends perosnally or co-workers who did?
Can't name 20 folks who gave more than 1k
Well at JSU this academic year alone
57 people gave over $5,000
72 ppl gave between $2,000 and $4,999
89 ppl gave between $1000 and $1,999
So that's 218 over $1,000

Can't name 50 folks who bought season tickets
We sold over 4,000 season tickets

Can't name 100 folks that went to school with us that are active in the alumni association
Not only that but we formed a new young alumni organization with over 100 members and made contributions to the university.

Trust me, I understand your argument. And we DO NEED TO DO BETTER. It's what I'm always harping on... But I just thought i'd throw the numbers out there since u were doing that lumping JSU in with yall thing again.

Here’s a question, how about JSU get with some other schools to start a conference within the FCS? Then after a certain period of time the whole conference moves to the FBS.

What you think?

Whats the point of paying $1.5 million to move up and play the same exact HBCU's that we play now? Then we will pay the FBS price just to play the same teams under the FBS flag. We keep holding ourselves back by waiting on others.

We may as well, as a group, put all them $1.5 millions and extra athletic funding into a game like the LB and split the pot on the FCS level if thats the case.

Good points.

We are already part of the FCS so it will not cost anything to create a conference.

Then we invite only those schools who have aspirations on moving to FBS.

You mean to tell me JSU, Tenn St., FAMU and 4 others schools (black or white) cannot create our own conference within the FCS. We only need 7 teams to qualify for the FCS playoffs.

Then after a period of time, the whole conference move up to FBS.

How much power does Sharp truly have? How much can he do without the backing of the SWAC presidents? Can he go out on his own and have us forego the SCG, for a shot at the playoffs? Can he put this Legacy Bowl "option" on the table without the support of the presidents?

agree. If JSU move they would still want to play GSU, SU, Alcorn and AAMU. And still get whipped by the rest of the Sunbelt.

Jackson State would not play AAMU. WHEN we move, we will probably have Alcorn, Southern, Grambling, Tennessee State and/or FAMU in rotation.

That would be the sensible thing... if the other larger HBCUs could join the SWAC and move up first and pave the way for other schools to do the same. The SIAC played football in two divisions in the 70s, but it didn't last because the larger schools left for the MEAC (SCST, FAMU, BCC, SAVST) and SWAC (ALST, A&M). If we worked together we could help support the larger schools helping to offset costs by stabilizing other sports, for the potential revenue sharing when they get on their feet in I-A, and then other schools that wanted to move up could do so with an smooth transition. However, that would take a lot of trust on the smaller schools that the first one's to move up won't leave them behind and also the larger schools to make sure they aren't supporting a group of welfare schools that don't want to spend the money to move up, but are happy collecting a revenue sharing check, which would affect marketability and also bring the overall image of the league down

I can name folks personally that I attend school with and who graduated in 07 with me who are active in their cities alumni chapter and who give back..hell me and my wife are both financially active in our local chapter.......you are stupid if u think someone will put names up for a message board topic, NT gave you the facts and numbers deal with it. There it is we give back but it could be better.....Don't try put JSU in the same category as ur poorly ran school........

If you look at TSNU and consider we had a higher attendance average over everyone in the SWAC except JSU. It looks like JSU will do just fine in attendance with out being in the SWAC.

It seems that your research can only go back two years? What would those numbers be if the OVC didn't give TNST welfare HBCU games so they could stay a float and made them play a full conference schedule like everybody else?

For Gorden, it’s about giving back; For Casem, it’s about hiring right

By now, most of you have probably already read our SWAC story in Tuesday’s C-L. It advances tonight’s Future of the SWAC event, an open forum that will include a few SWAC icons set for 6:30 p.m. at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

W.C. Gorden and Marino Casem, the winningest football coaches at Jackson State and Alcorn State, respectively, will be at the forum. We didn’t have room in our Tuesday story to expound on Gorden and Casem’s ideas in reviving the SWAC. But we have all the room in the word on the Internet (isn’t the Internet great?) …

For Gorden, it’s primarily about alumni giving back to the university. Also, it’s about marketing better and getting on TV. Check out what he told us …

Rest story

Now, to Casem, who believes that SWAC administrators need to do a better job at hiring …

Casem firmly believes that the biggest problem the the conference is at the top: administrators. And that these administrators need to hire coaches who want to remain at HBCUs, coaches who aren’t using HBCUs gigs as a stepping stone to jobs at larger, predominantly white institutions.
Also for Casem, hire coaches who are rooted in HBCUs. “When they’re hiring people they’ve got to get somebody who has a feel, an understanding of the culture they’re going into.”
More from Casem: “To get it back, the institution, HBCUs, have to have a mind set as a whole that they have to improve on the facilities and the quality of athletes. Presidents and administators have to place increased emphisis on athletics. And allow it not to be just a recess program.”

Dayum!!! Dont this sound so familar?!?!?!

BD,

Thank you. We only need eight schools (black or white) who are financially able to do it. Man, the new conference could get explore new sponsors such as Nike, TV contract with Fox Sports to show our games live, etc. We just need to hire a good visionary and leader who can get it done. This can work!

It doesn't cost anything to start a conference within the FCS since the schools are already part of the FCS.

I said over one hundred. man they really don't teach you youngin how to comprehend. Yall are to emotional. Facts son. Facts.

Since most FCS schools are that great with travel.. you have to find 8 "legit" schools that are willing to travel to all 8 schools....

Since we are in the FCS then it would be possible for the SWAC to be included in the FCS playoffs and make it mandatory provided that we when the appropriate games. (No pun intended) but I think that Braddy has overlooked the conference a little because as long as we continue to have players move in the "league" (NFL) than I think that the conference is still a legitimate conference as a matter of fact we are still beating out all of the other FCS conferences in that department. To tell you the truth I wouldn't know what to think if the conference was disbanded.

Good point. Outside of the SWAC and maybe FAMU/SCSU/NCA&T, the rest of FCS sucks when it comes to traveling. Jackson State, FAMU, Tennessee State, Southern, SCSU, Georgia State, Jacksonville State, and maybe Georga Southern would make an ideal "8".

This is just pure hate.

BTW:
Since 2002, Troy has been to 4 bowl games. When they was FCS, they would beat the slop out of A@M and they would beat the slop out of ya'll now. Yet here you are talking about how "nothing" they are.

Troy went from having FAMU kick their butt in Troy and having more FAMU fans at their stadium to beating a Big 12 team (Mizzou) on Thurday night football.
