http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40497545/ns/local_news-jackson_ms/A former Jackson State University football player who is accused of leading officers on a high speed chase on Thursday is now facing charges in connection with armed robberies in two different cities, police said.
Lemario Smoot, 24, remained hospitalized on Friday after a high-speed chase with Vicksburg police ended when he crashed his vehicle on Interstate 20 near the Edwards exit, authorities said.
The chase began after a robbery at the Kangaroo gas station on Washington Street in Vicksburg, police said. Smoot is expected to be charged in connection with that robbery once he is released from the University of Mississippi Medical Center, police said. His condition was not immediately known.
Jackson police Officer Colendula Green said on Friday that Smoot will also be charged in connection with the Nov. 24 armed robbery of the Family Dollar at 516 Nakoma Drive.
Smoot is also facing charges of fleeing from an officer and traffic violations in connection with the chase on the interstate, Vicksburg police said.
Vicksburg Police Department Chief Walter Armstrong said he believes his officers followed protocol and did everything right in pursuing Smoot.

"High-speed chases can be dangerous, and I also recognize that and they made the decision to terminate the chase but to go in the same direction," Armstrong said. "Basically what they were doing was following the vehicle at a safe distance."
JSU officials confirmed that Smoot played football for the university last year and is a registered student this year.
Beytoch mode or not, ya;ll didn't deserve to be in Bham. The refs put you there but thank goodness yall get to take the azz whoopin instead of a JSU team with our first and second string QBs out.
