According to George Washington University, junior Kye Allums will play women’s basketball this year, but will compete as a man and not as a woman as he originally did.
Everything will remain the same as he takes to the court for the university’s season opener, except now Allums, 21, will be classified as a man, becoming the first openly transgender player in NCAA Division I basketball, reports stated.
Allums, 5-foot-11, from Hugo, MN, said the university and his teammates have been very supportive of his decision. However, he will not be permitted to receive testosterone treatment until he is no longer a student athlete.
"I used to feel like trans anything was really weird and those people were crazy, and I wondered, 'How can you feel like that?'" he said, in an interview with Outsports.com. "But I looked it up on the Internet and I thought, 'Oh my god, I'm one of those weird people."
The NCAA is looking at how to handle the locker room and other issue that may be sensitive for Allums due to his gender identity.
