Re: HBCU Football TV Deals

It is Saturday and there is plenty of live college football games and none of them are HBCU Games. The CAA has a double header on CSN New England with both games live today and double headers some weeks. The SouthCon is on live each week on SportSouth, mean while we are happy with games being on Thursday nights 5 times a years and mostly taped delay games on Saturday nights on ESPNU that has poor coverage and will not show one of the traditions of HBCU Sports, the bands. At half-time, they talk about everyone elses games & don't even talk about the game from the studio to give the game proper coverage.

We all know that the tv deal we have with ESPNU is a joke and the Magic City Classic will not even be on television next week. What can our HBCU'S do? The MEAC & SWAC needs to stop fighting and come together with a decent televison package. ESPN & Walt-Disney got a good deal with the MEAC/SWAC Challenge & the Florida Classic while the HBCU'S get peanuts out of the deal and we are stuck until 2014, what do you think?

How is the deal a joke when it has been documented the Swac and Meac generated more money than the rest of the FCS conferences.

Because It does not show the games we want to see, like the Magic City Classic next week. The half-time show is not seen and most of the Saturday Games are taped delay. It would be nice to see more Saturday Live Games. If you miss the game, most of the time, it is not replayed.

What good is that if it's not making the product on the field better? All those other conferences might not make as much as the MEac/SWAC but are their programs struggling as bad as some HBCU programs?

And that Thursday night game is in a Horrible slot. Look at what it has to face-NBC, ABC, CW and CBS lineups not to mention NBA, NHL and UFC/TNA on Spike Tv. Then you have high schools sports. Could ther enot be a better night to air that game?

The MAC and some teams out West used that Thursday timeslot to build their programs. We are phucking up by not taking advantage. Our schools have a history of bad marketing and promotion. We out an inferior product on the field and expect folks to show up just because.

We should be taking those Thursday games and doing ticket promotions, student giveaways (give away 10 ipads or 20 book scholarships), $5 family tickets etc. Make the environment crunk as hell and make sure all your recruits know you will be on tv, as well as your prospective student list. Make great commercials which highlight the school and sell sell sell.

You are right, FAMU. You are right. Schools who play these Thursday and Friday night games shutdown campus after a certain time and create a tremendous football atmosphere that involves the surrounding community.

I concur 100%.....One other thing could help.....GET OUR OWN NETWORK!

With all of the technology available these days it is not as difficult as say, 20 years ago to do video coverage of a game......and I mean quality video..... Stop the squabbling and work together!

Where is HSRN in all of this?

If these small churches can stream broadcasts of their services, why can't a university football team? There is no way in 2010 with the ability to watch games/other programming via the Internet and even on certain mobile devices fans should be shutout when it comes to consuming broadcasts of games. If not a major network, try to work something out with the local public access channel or at least get a university stream setup.

The Thursday night game is just fine as far as time slot. If people want to see sports and more specifically football they will watch what is available. We have to move the Thursday night game up to ESPN2 status. To do that we have to market and promote the surrounding community even more than what was stated earlier in this thread. We still need the name ESPN right now, so I would not think about moving. A FoxSports regional offer may be beneficial. The Saturday night game is tough to workout.

You are right. I cant even argue with this because I remember the MAC games being on Thursdays before the BCS conferences got the slots...

We just need to do a better job of promoting it thats all.... and I cant stand that band/halftime stuff either. Go to the game.. lol

It's been messed up since BET decide they could make more money running infomercials instead of showing live black college football in the mid-90's and it has only gotten worse. Somehow they think Black college football is rinky-dink which at times it is but, it an untap market.

Good luck with the Fox Sports regional. The FSNs are pretty locked down as far as scheduling goes with their national TV deals. The SLC package dwindled each year with FSN and forced the league to create the SLC TV Network. Now, league games are shown throughout the league footprint on different stations in each market - in addition to online on SLC Now and later on Fox College Sports. On the bright side, now get about 8 football games and 16 basketball games - plus league championships in soccer, softball and baseball - on my TV!

One answer is to buy the airtime. When you see other small conferences with games on CSS or SportsSouth often they buy the time and control the advertising. Now they dictate which games are played on Thurs or Sat. Currently ESPN will tell the SWAC which date is available after they place all the BCS, NonAQ and time buys. Here is the math problem, if it costs $20,000 to produce a broadcast thats $220,000 for an 11 game schedule. Someone has to find four sponsors willing to kick in $55,000 for the season to breakeven. It can be done but who has that vision?

Grambling and Southern

S.U. vs PVU
S.U. vs JSU
S.U. vs Alcorn
S.U. vs TxSU
S.U. vs ASU
GSU vs JSU
JSU vs Alcorn

IMO would help out greatly in regards to ratings, u can hate all u want, but be real, S.U. prolly attracts a greater audience by having them on T.V. alot, again this is my IMO, just being real, we bring the most on the road, and granted if we would have better opponents to come to Mumford, we would have a greater turn-out like we had in the past, again, having S.U. on networks would be big for the conference, then once we establish that brand, more teams can follow in the mix and thus ESPn2 and ESPN would come calling for these games,
just being real

U need that one or 2 school who is going to attract folks/ratings,
Having games such as Alcorn and UAPB is not going to want networks to give us deals, (no shots at either university) but I'm not rushing home to see these two play on Thursday night, I'll pick up a newspaper or log on the net and check the final score

Take example the ACC, you would rarely catch or would catch a Duke or someone playing on T.V. back in the day, you'll mostly see FSU, on T.V. thus using that school to uplift the conference, but now since the playing field has level throughout the conference, now u see at times your Marylands and B.C. or NC.St on T.V. but before you wouldn't catch them on T.V. again, FSU was that school to bring the attention to the other schools,
thats why I think, and again this is me, you need that one school to be on T.V. more so, yea its good to share the t.v. spotlight but again we're talkin about long terms here
juss my .02 on the matter
