Can someone give me a clear cut definition of it. It seems as though anytime someone dont like what Black people are doing they calling a CoonFest

I actually first heard the word (well read it anyway) on TSPN...and I think I asked the same question. Either last year or two years ago. Talking about "c**nery".

From context clues I've gathered it's when a Black person (or group) does something that in a sense "sets us back", that....as a race, we have worked hard to overcome.

I tend to equate it along the lines of selling "your" soul to make money and appease the "white" man (or another race). It can be for entertainment purposes or simple b/c a person doesn't know any better.

Go read Carter G Woodson's "Miseducation of the Negro," he explained it pretty thoroughly
Is this one persons opinion, or shot in the dark disection, of the word? or is this an actuaul, officail definition of the word????

A combination of the first two. He basically talked about how black entertainers of his time would settle for doing fast and easy shows and tricks to earn money instead of honing their craft and waiting for gigs that would allow them to also build respectability. Think about "Black Face" actors. He felt they were basically selling their soul and credibility for a quick buck and that it did not benefit the race.

I've heard it used when describing Grambling's band ~snicker~....

I think folks are just being funny and talking smack when using it to describe a marching band.

I'm going to make it real simple, watch "Hollywood Shuffle" because "garden tools gotta eat too". Honestly, it got the point across. I'm not even going to mention "Bamboozled" yet.

Trash, better written than most of TP's stuff though. You can add "To Wang Fu" to that category as well.

foolish or playful behavior or practice

c**n
–noun
2. Slang: Disparaging and Offensive . a black person.
The insulting U.S. meaning "black person" was in use by 1837, no doubt boosted by the enormously popular blackface minstrel act "Zip c**n" (George Washington Dixon) which debuted in New York City in 1834,

Can someone answer the question please...? Cause these same folks ain't say sh*t bout Robin Williams and "Mrs. Doubtfire"

That is stragiht buffonary just like Peter Griffin, Homer Simpson, Al Bundy and even Ms. Lucy Ricado-Ball herself.

You haven't really heard me use the word cooning to much, excepting when referring to Gram's band, lol  I really just don't care for watching men in drag, no matter what color. Madea can be funny at moments and I have watched TP live though.

My personal definition of cooning "Public display of behavior that strengthens the case for traditional racial stereotypes that negatively affected blacks" or "an act of entertainment meant to attract a majority audience while negatively affecting the perception of the minority group which one represents"

Here's another question...

When discussing Black "stuff" why must someone always bring up if white folks are complaining about the same thing.

once again...why do we have to compare ourselves/do what white folks are doing.

This is about our race and what we have had to overcome, who cares if white folks complain about today's rock music vs. Guns 'N Roses, or Mrs. Doubtfire, etc.

White people didn't have to fight as hard to have Black women looked upon as real actresses in the businesses or that Black women can act in roles outside of a nanny or a maid. So maybe that's why some people get upset with Martin/Jamie Fox/TP dressing up as a big women with huge breast and ass looking a fool. So to compare the history with a Mrs. Doubtfire...why would white people get upset?

Not saying I'm on either side of the convo as to what is/isnt' c**nery...but it's funny how quick folks are to bring up what white folks are saying as if that justifies something or makes it void.

I'm just saying....

Interested topics...although we've discussed them about 5 times this year already but I think this is the furthest it has gone...so carry on.

Lets just be real about this...Cooning only applies to black people. So comparing things white people will not matter.
Its just like comparing something a white person does...while trying to argue about what "Uncle Tom" means. It doesn't work.

Cooning is when black entertainers entertain white masses by going against thier own values, stepping into racial stereotype, enforcing negative racial views, and making fools of themselves for a dollar and to entertain a white audience.

They were called Coons..because instead of making a stand and not agreeing to do what they knew wasnt the best thing they did it anyway to get a dollar and please white people with hope of getting further.

Soooooo.....what is it when they entertain Black Masses?
My point is, Don't call it cooning when you don't like the shyt. Cause Im pretty sure folks calling some shit "COONING",are the same ones that Like, Paid In Full, or other movies or music that glorify gangsta shyt. which by this def, is going against values of blacks..

With that said...can ya'll stop trynna use 1880 definitions for shit in 2010 :retard:

It aint about wether you like it or not..it is what it is. Paid in Full? Thats a bad example, it based on a true story.

We using 1880 definitions because that is where it came from. You want everyone to make a new meaning for something said before we were even born?

True story...right...and made into a movie for profit, further giving white folks acrocc the nation and internationally, a view of black ppl going against OUR values right? the fact that its a TRUE story, should make it worse J.

And jeff. You can't use that same tired ass def, with all the things in history thats changed.

Half Assed example
Black friends call each other the "N" word when they communicate and its used as a word meaning Friendship or aquaintence. Hell, You've called me the "N" word B4 , and that word was used against us back.....in 1880

get my point of old definitions now bruh?
